LIVE @ 11:00: Sask. premier calling on other provincial leaders to join New West Partnership

Premier of Saskatchewan Scott Moe, left, and Premier of Ontario Doug Ford shake hands during a media event to sign a Memorandum of Understanding in Saskatoon on Sunday, June 1, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Liam Richards Saskatchewan's premier is calling on provincial leaders across the country to join the New West Partnership, an interprovincial trade agreement that aims to streamline the movement of goods and workers. Premier Scott Moe is expected to make the call in a press conference in Saskatoon at 11 a.m. The event will be streamed live at the top of this article. By working to coordinate regulations and standards across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, the New West Partnership has aimed to open up trade between the western provinces and potentially unlock billions in financial gains. As the country's premiers gathered in Saskatoon to pitch the prime minister on ambitious infrastructure projects last month, Ontario Premier Doug Ford signed a memorandum of understanding with Alberta and Saskatchewan that the two provinces said could open the door for Ontario to join the New West framework. Now, Moe is looking for other provinces to buy in. -More details to come following live event.

N.B. Premier Holt taking Trump's Aug. 1 tariff threat ‘extremely seriously'

New Brunswick Premier Susan Holt says her government is taking new threats from U.S. President Donald Trump 'extremely seriously,' as the trade war approaches a new Aug.1 benchmark. On Monday, Trump said he sent letters to Prime Minister Mark Carney and other world leaders outlining new tariff rates as 'the deals.' Canada faces a 35 per cent tariff, up from 25 per cent initially imposed in March. 'Our team continues to take this extremely seriously, as much as history has proven that these kinds of letters and suggestions from Trump are fleeting and are prone to change,' Holt said to reporters on Thursday. Holt said the province's metal and seafood industries are experiencing the earliest trade war impacts, so far. A recent study from the Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick reports 22,000 jobs in the province that could be affected by tariffs.
