Air India Plane Crash: UK law firm probes liability, warns families on cremation risks

A UK law firm is looking into the
Air India plane crash
that killed 241 people on board the flight, including 53 British nationals, and several others on the ground.
Keystone Law's investigation is independent of the official probe by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, supported by a four-member team from UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch. The firm's focus is on potential liability and providing legal assistance to victims' families, particularly those in the UK.
Aviation Litigators At Work
The London-bound airliner that crashed on Thursday, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner powered by two General Electric engines, is now the subject of several technical and forensic investigations. Ashish K Singh, English barrister and managing partner of law firm Capstone Legal, emphasised that Keystone has nothing to do with Air Accidents Investigation Branch. 'The focus of the law firm's investigation is generally to establish the reason for the death of British nationals in the crash, which includes potential exposure of Boeing and Air India to claims in UK courts under the tort law,' he said.
The tort law, which deals with wrongs that cause harm to individuals, holds the wrongdoers accountable and allows for seeking compensation for harms from accidents to intentional acts. Aviation specialists James Healy-Pratt and Owen Hanna are leading the Keystone team and Chicago-based Wisner Law Firm is assisting them. The Chicago law firm that specialises in aviation-related litigation also advised clients in the 2020 Air India Express crash, where an aircraft arriving from Dubai overshot the runway at Calicut airport in Kerala and plunged into a 30-foot gorge, killing 21 people.
Healy-Pratt said there is an urgent need to recover and identify the deceased so their remains can be returned to their families. A senior coroner will investigate those in the UK, followed by formal inquests, he said in a statement. Healy-Pratt also issued a cautionary note for families of the deceased British nationals considering cremation in India. 'Cremated remains do not constitute a body under UK coronial law, which means they cannot trigger an inquest in the UK. We urge families to seek legal advice before proceeding with any cremation arrangements abroad,' he said.
The accident will trigger several types of insurance and reinsurance claims in India and abroad, said Consortia Legal cofounding partner Satyendra Shrivastava. 'With British nationals on board, the kin of the British passengers may invoke claims under their life and travel policies as per UK laws,' said Shrivastava. 'Apart from the aircraft hull insurance, which typically provides compensation
for total loss of the aircraft, the airline will also have liability towards passengers for death claims and towards third parties for death, injury and loss of property. As more facts emerge according to official investigations, we may see several claims against the airline and other parties,' he added.
Pioneer Legal partner Pritha Jha said law firms typically get involved to provide advice on the repatriation of mortal remains to the victim's country of origin. 'This is usually because families need to decide whether an inquest into the cause of death should be made. This is not possible if remains are repatriated post-cremation,' added Jha.
Tata Sons, which owns Air India, has announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for each victim of the crash, including passengers, crew and those on the ground. Additionally, the group will cover full medical treatment for all injured individuals. Air India has separately committed an interim relief of Rs 25 lakh per deceased and the lone survivor among the 242 on board the plane.

More than two weeks after the Ahmedabad plane crash, the DNA test has ascertained the identity of the last victim, and the death toll in the tragedy now stands at 260, officials said on Saturday (June 28, 2025). The mortal remains of the last victim were handed over to the family, they said. Medical authorities had earlier pegged the fatality count at 270. A London-bound Air India flight crashed into a hostel complex in the Meghaninagar area of Ahmedabad moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in the city on June 12, 2025, killing 241 on board and several others on the ground. One passenger miraculously survived. "The DNA matching of the last body of the Air India plane crash victim has been done. The victim's mortal remains have been handed over to relatives," Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Dr. Rakesh Joshi said. "With this, the death toll in the plane crash is 260," he said, adding that three patients, who suffered injuries in the air crash, were undergoing treatment in the civil hospital. The bodies of all 260 victims have been handed over to the relatives so far. Of the 241 passengers and crew members who died, the mortal remains of 240 had been identified earlier while one body was pending for match. The matching of the DNA samples confirmed the victim's identity on Friday (June 27, 2025), the officials said. Apart from 241 passengers and crew members, 19 persons on the ground died, they said. A 40-year-old British national, Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, emerged as the lone survivor of the plane crash. Till June 23, officials had confirmed the identity of 259 victims. They had to carry out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition or damaged. The 260 victims included 200 Indians, including 181 passengers and 19 ground victims, seven Portuguese nationals, 52 British nationals and one Canadian, the government said in a release. An official release said the DNA matching process was very complicated as a large number of bodies had to be identified since they were beyond recognition. In such cases, the DNA matching of victims with their family members takes months. But in the case of the Air India plane crash, identification of samples was completed in about two weeks, it said.

(Bloomberg) -- In 2020, Carlo Aragon started the 'Salomonology' Instagram page as a fashion moodboard to help him decide whether to invest $150 in a pair of Salomon XT-6s. He bought it, liking how the shoes looked 'unorthodox.' Others did too — the account now has almost 150,000 followers, intrigued by how trail shoes can pair with streetwear. Aragon's Instagram fame mirrors the ascent of Amer Sports Inc., the company behind Salomon. Since its New York Stock Exchange debut in February 2024, the Helsinki-based group, which also owns outerwear brand Arc'teryx and sports equipment maker Wilson, has nearly tripled its market value to $21 billion. It has outpaced peers like On Holding AG, Hoka parent company Deckers Outdoor Corp. and Anta Sports Products Ltd., the Chinese sporting goods giant that owns a 42% stake in Amer Sports. Amer Sports' growth has beaten the consumer downturn by riding the outdoor activity wave. It's among the mid-tier luxury brands offering shoppers high-quality goods that don't break the bank. The bulk of this rally occurred recently, following first-quarter results that defied a rocky global economy. Sales topped expectations, and the company raised its outlook while others cut theirs. Growth of its Technical Apparel and Outdoor Performance divisions — which respectively house Arc'teryx and Salomon — boosted results, Chief Executive Officer James Zheng said in the most recent earnings call, highlighting the brands' potential. While Salomon sneakers surpassed $1 billion in sales in 2024, it's a fraction of the $180 billion global sneaker market, and Arc'teryx is 'very under-penetrated globally,' he said in the call. Amer Sports declined a request for an interview with an executive. Amer Sports wasn't always this successful. Shares remained subdued after the IPO due to high debt, low trading volume, and significant exposure to a lagging Chinese economy, said Laurent Vasilescu, an analyst at BNP Paribas Exane, who rates the stock outperform. Then in December, Amer Sports issued shares to pay down most of its debt. This move reduced leverage and boosted trading volume, alleviating two of the three primary investor concerns, Vasilescu said in an interview. China, which accounts for about 30% of the company's revenue, remains a concern, though sales in the market have bested expectations every quarter since the IPO. Premium sportswear and outdoor market gear is one of the fastest-growing consumer segments in China, attracting younger and female consumers, as well as luxury shoppers, Chief Financial Officer Andrew Page said on the earnings call. Glamping — short for glamorous camping — and gorpcore – wearing outdoor clothes as everyday wear – are currently trending in China, Vasilescu said. Amer Sports is also attracting middle- and upper-income customers who like the 'quiet luxury' aesthetic and the upscale in-store shopping experience of its brands, he added. That's happening in the US too, where celebrities like Timothée Chalamet and Bella Hadid have been spotted wearing Salomon shoes. Sales in its Americas division have grown every year since 2020 – the earliest publicly available results – though at a slower pace than Greater China's, which is estimated to overtake Europe, the Middle East and Africa as Amer Sports' second-largest market by revenue this year. One fan is Gabriella Gonzalez, a 29-year-old stylist who popped by a Salomon store in New York City's SoHo shopping district on a Friday afternoon. She praised the breathability, waterproofing and style of her pink-and-black XT-6 shoes. 'They make my outfits pop,' she said. About half a mile away is Arc'teryx's largest US store. Customer Chris Rojes said he doesn't mind paying more for Arc'teryx's gear over other brands. 'You feel more special in them.' Arc'teryx distinguishes itself from other outdoor apparel brands like Patagonia Inc. and VF Corp's The North Face through a 'much higher level of premiumization,' said TD Cowen analyst John Kernan, who has a buy rating on Amer Sports. Despite higher prices, consumers are willing to pay for Arc'teryx's 'leading innovation.' Declining consumer brand loyalty and a growing desire for variety also creates an opportunity for Salomon and Arc'teryx to gain market share from industry leaders like Nike Inc. and Adidas AG, Vasilescu said. To keep flying high, Amer Sports needs to go global, analysts said, warning that it's an uphill battle. 'We believe that the global brand rollout will not be easy' due to Arc'teryx's high price points and intense competition in Western outerwear markets, said HSBC analyst Akshay Gupta, who has a hold rating on the company. Morningstar analyst Ivan Su, who has a sell rating, believes Amer Sports' would need a compound annual growth rate of 20% over the next five years to support its currently high valuation, which would require 'near flawless execution' globally.
