Visakhapatnam Central Jail faces severe overcrowding amid surge in ganja smuggling cases
Speaking to TNIE, Superintendent of Visakhapatnam Central Prison (SCP) M Mahesh Babu emphasised that the Visakhapatnam Central Jail facility was designed to accommodate 900 inmates, including 80 female prisoners. The jail has around 1,830 prisoners, far exceeding its capacity. Among the inmates, 1,548 are on remand, and the number of female prisoners has slightly increased to 82.
At present, there are 185 male lifers and no female lifers in the jail. Around 1,000 prisoners have been booked under the NDPS Act, specifically for ganja-related cases, Mahesh Babu added. He stated that over the past few months, as many as 200 first-time offenders have been in the jail, highlighting an increase in crime reporting and legal actions.

Watchman held for growing cannabis in vacant plot in Hyderabad
A 45-year-old man working as a watchman at an apartment complex in Vittalwadi was arrested by the Narayanguda police for cultivating cannabis in a vacant plot adjacent to the building. The cannabis plants were spotted when some police officers took shelter near the plot during the rain on Saturday, July 19. The accused, identified as Kailash Joshi, had been employed as a watchman at Neeraj Villa Apartment. An officer from Narayanguda police said he had been growing the plants in an open plot situated between Neeraj Villa and Kirti Enclave, which had remained unoccupied for nearly a decade due to ownership disputes. Following a tip-off, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Nagaraju, conducted a raid on the site with the assistance of the clues team. Joshi was found digging near the cannabis plants and attempted to flee when he saw the officers, but was apprehended and taken into custody. During questioning, Joshi reportedly confessed to having a long-standing habit of consuming cannabis by boiling it in milk. 'Facing difficulty in sourcing it, he decided to cultivate the drug himself using the unused plot behind the apartment where he worked,' said the officer, adding that he brought cannabis seeds from his hometown in Uttarakhand and sowed them among pumpkin plants to avoid suspicion. A total of 15 cannabis plants weighing 4.2 kilograms were seized, along with a digging tool and a mobile phone. Joshi, a resident of King Koti Road in Himayathnagar, was booked under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. Further investigation is underway.

'Flipkart' booked in Chhattisgarh for selling lethal knife used in petrol-pump murder
RAIPUR: The Raipur police on Saturday registered an FIR against e-commerce store Flipkart holding it accountable for selling "banned (lethal) knives" on its platform. This after two persons used the knife purchased from the online company to commit a murder and loot a petrol pump. 'The online shopping site Flipkart has violated our strict instructions to avoid selling or delivering lethal knives or sharp-edge weapons. The accused who killed a staff member of a petrol pump and looted money had ordered knives from Flipkart. Another employee was left critically injured in the knife-crime. An FIR has been lodged against Flipkart. The case was also registered against a courier agency 'Elastic Run' associated with Flipkart to deliver their products', Vivek Shukla, additional superintendent of police (Nava Raipur) told TNIE. The police arrested six persons including manager and employees of Flipkart and the courier company under the BNS section 125-B (endanger human life or personal safety) and section 3(5) causing grievous hurt. Earlier the Raipur police in the separate FIR registered case against the two accused arrested for murder, causing hurt during robbery, and offences related to Arms Act. The two accused Sameer Tandon (21) and Kunal Tiwari (24) came on their motorbike to a petrol pump at Umaria in the outskirts of Raipur. Following some altercations there, the two accused attacked the employees Anil Gaikwad and Yogesh Miri and fled after looting the money from them. Miri succumbed to his injuries and Gaikwad is battling for his life in a hospital. The police said they succeeded in identifying the offenders observing the footage of CCTV cameras at the locations while also gathering inputs from locals.

DRI Seizes Over 4 Kg Cocaine Worth Rs 40 Cr At Bengaluru Airport; One Arrested
Last Updated: The Bengaluru Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted an Indian male passenger who had arrived from Doha on July 18. DRI officials seized more than 4 kg of cocaine valued at ₹40 crore at Bengaluru International Airport and arrested a passenger, the finance ministry said on Saturday. The Bengaluru Zonal Unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted an Indian male passenger who had arrived from Doha on July 18. The passenger was carrying two superhero comics/ magazines which were unusually heavy. The officers carefully recovered white powder concealed in coverside of magazines. 'The powder tested positive for cocaine. The recovered cocaine weighing 4,006 grams (over 4 kg) and having an international market value of around Rs 40 crore was seized under the provisions of the NDPS Act," the ministry said.
