Forecasts for Milder US Weather Weigh on Nat-Gas Prices

August Nymex natural gas (NGQ25) on Tuesday closed down -0.073 (-2.20%). Aug nat-gas prices extended Monday's sharp losses on Tuesday and posted a 1.5-week low on the outlook for cooler US temperatures, which would curb nat-gas demand from electricity providers for air conditioning usage. Forecaster Vaisala on Tuesday said forecasts shifted cooler for the Midwest in the latter half of the July 27-31 period, and milder conditions are expected to continue for August 1-5 over much of the US. Expectations for higher US nat-gas production are also weighing on nat-gas prices after last Friday's weekly report from Baker Hughes showed that the number of active US nat-gas drilling rigs in the week ending July 18 rose by +9 to a 17-month high of 117 rigs. Lower-48 state dry gas production on Tuesday was 107.2 bcf/day (+3.9% y/y), according to BNEF. Lower-48 state gas demand on Tuesday was 78.1 bcf/day (-2.8% y/y), according to BNEF. Estimated LNG net flows to US LNG export terminals on Tuesday were 14.9 bcf/day (-1.1% w/w), according to BNEF. An increase in US electricity output is positive for nat-gas demand from utility providers. The Edison Electric Institute reported last Wednesday that total US (lower-48) electricity output in the week ended July 12 rose +1.1% y/y to 98,133 GWh (gigawatt hours), and US electricity output in the 52-week period ending July 12 rose +2.4% y/y to 4,248,982 GWh. Last Thursday's weekly EIA report was slightly bearish for nat-gas prices since nat-gas inventories for the week ended July 11 rose +46 bcf, above the consensus of +45 bcf and the 5-year average of +41 bcf for the week. As of July 11, nat-gas inventories were down -4.9% y/y, but were +6.2% above their 5-year seasonal average, signaling adequate nat-gas supplies. As of July 17, gas storage in Europe was 65% full, compared to the 5-year seasonal average of 73% full for this time of year. Baker Hughes reported last Friday that the number of active US nat-gas drilling rigs in the week ending July 18 rose by +9 to a 17-month high of 117 rigs. In the past ten months, the number of gas rigs has risen from the 4-year low of 94 rigs reported in September 2024. Positive Points Temenos AG (TMSNY) delivered strong revenue growth in Q2 2025, significantly exceeding guidance with a 24% increase in subscription and SaaS revenue. The company successfully closed large deals, including a marquee win with Banco da Amazonia in Brazil and a significant deal with EastWest Bank in APAC. Temenos AG (TMSNY) raised its full-year guidance due to strong performance in the first half and stable sales environment. The company launched new AI products, including the Temenos Product Manager Copilot and FCM AI agent, enhancing its product offerings. Temenos AG (TMSNY) received several industry awards, including being named the best-selling core banking provider for the 20th consecutive year by IBS Intelligence. Negative Points There was an issue with the conference call dial-in numbers, which may have affected participation in the earnings call. The company continues to face headwinds in SaaS from downsell linked to a BNPL client, impacting growth. Despite strong revenue growth, the company did not change its free cash flow guidance, partly due to restructuring costs and timing differences in cash flow realization. The sales commission plan change to half-yearly may have contributed to a concentration of deal closures in Q2, raising concerns about potential impacts on future quarters. The macroeconomic environment remains uncertain, prompting the company to maintain a prudent outlook despite a strong pipeline. Q & A Highlights Q: Can you frame how we should think about the full-year guidance following the strong second quarter? Is the guidance conservative, or does it mean most large deals were closed early in the year? A: Paniagotis Spiliopoulos, CFO: We started the year with a prudent approach due to macroeconomic uncertainty, and we continue to maintain that prudence. The pipeline is strong, and we feel good about its quality and size. We still have some large deals in the pipeline, especially for Q4. The guidance is for at least 6% growth, and excluding the impact of the BNPL client, we would deliver robust growth. Q: Can you provide more specifics on the second quarter's revenue rebound and SaaS trends? A: Jean-Pierre Brulard, CEO: Q2 was strong due to stable execution across regions, particularly in Europe and the Americas, and the conversion of slipped deals from Q1. The SaaS segment also showed good growth, contributing to the overall strong performance. Q: With the changes you've made at Temenos, where will your focus be as CEO in the next year? A: Jean-Pierre Brulard, CEO: We are executing our strategy to balance solid foundations with market investments, particularly in Western Europe and the Americas. We are focusing on AI, continuing to please our installed base, and investing in product and customer relationships. We are also enhancing our sales capabilities, especially in the US. Q: How did the different pieces within subscription and SaaS trend in Q2? Did you see any reacceleration in SaaS growth? A: Paniagotis Spiliopoulos, CFO: Subscription had a very strong growth quarter and half-year. SaaS ACV also showed sizable double-digit growth, indicating that both subscription and SaaS contributed to the strong performance. Q: Can you elaborate on the sales execution and whether the change to half-yearly commission plans contributed to Q2 success? A: Jean-Pierre Brulard, CEO: The change to half-yearly commission plans was intended to improve linearity and align incentives. It motivated salespeople to close business in the first half without pulling forward deals from H2. The pipeline for H2 remains strong, and we are pleased with the execution demonstrated in the first half.
