Tragic Gerik crash site among key highway sections slated for RM55m major road upgrades this year, says works minister
Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said that since 2023, various initiatives have been undertaken to enhance the Gerik-Jeli route, particularly along the FT04 federal road.
He noted that in June 2023, an allocation of RM30 million was approved for the reconstruction of sections of the JRTB. Two months later, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced an additional RM30 million to further upgrade the route.
'This allocation has been utilised to upgrade and maintain several critical sections of FT04,' he said, in a Facebook post.
He added that ongoing works include road resurfacing, and the repair of facilities, bridges, street lights, and traffic lights along both directions of the route.
Nanta said that all upgrading works on FT04 were completed in phases between July and August 2023, with a total cost of RM55.73 million, based on road damage assessments conducted through the pavement condition assessment (PCA).
He added that, in 2024, RM7.2 million had been allocated for various repair works at several other sections of the route.
Nanta said that, while the police investigation into the tragic accident early Monday morning is still ongoing, he has received various reactions regarding the road conditions, which have gone viral on social media.
'As I have emphasised before, the ministry remains fully committed to ensuring that road infrastructure is safe and comfortable for all users.
'At the same time, I must stress that road safety is a shared responsibility, including that of road users themselves,' he said.
Monday's tragic incident involved a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih, Terengganu, to their campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak. The bus overturned following a collision at KM53 of JRTB, near Tasik Banding, Gerik, claiming the lives of 15 students.
The crash also left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, his assistant, and three passengers of the Perodua Alza. — Bernama

'Should these baseless accusations continue to circulate, we will not hesitate to initiate legal action, including against media outlets for defamation and malicious falsehood,' the statement read. SMM noted that the allegations relate to an ongoing lawsuit involving Sim's predecessor, Jontih Enggihon, and businessman Albert Tei. The suit includes claims of fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, tampering with official documents, and conspiracy to injure. 'The current wave of public allegations appears to recycle issues already under judicial scrutiny,' it said. It clarified that the photograph was taken during a working visit in August 2024 as part of foreign direct investment discussions with a mining conglomerate in Indonesia. The visit followed board approval in February 2024 and was led by Sim, then serving as chief strategy officer. It added that the first trip to the conglomerate's base had occurred in March 2023, and was initiated by Jontih as part of a due diligence exercise. The partnership was formally recommended to the board by Jontih in December 2023. On July 18, Malaysiakini reported that the now viral photograph had 'triggered a fresh political storm'. Apart from Sim, the photograph featured SMM secretary Emily Chong and Sabah timber tycoon Elbert Lim next to a private jet. The portal quoted Warisan assemblyman Justin Wong as claiming the photo had sparked a new scandal engulfing SMM.

Man probed over ‘offensive' post on royals, CJ appointment

(MCMC pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is investigating a man for posting an allegedly offensive social media comment on the royal institution involving the recent appointment of the chief justice. MCMC said the man had his statement recorded at the Kampung Melayu Subang police station on July 21. His mobile phone and SIM card were seized to assist in the investigation. The case is being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities, punishable by a maximum RM500,000 fine, up to two years in jail, or both, upon conviction. In a statement, MCMC reminded the public to avoid sharing content that is offensive, seditious or defamatory, particularly those involving the royal institution, as it could threaten public order and national harmony. Last Friday, it said it was investigating another person for allegedly uploading offensive remarks about the judiciary. Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh was appointed chief justice last week, replacing Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who retired earlier this month. The Yang di-Pertuan Agong also consented to the appointments of Justices Abu Bakar Jais and Azizah Nawawi as Court of Appeal president and chief judge of Sabah and Sarawak, respectively.

MACC seizes RM332m in assets from scrap metal and e-waste smuggling syndicate
PETALING JAYA, July 21 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has frozen and confiscated assets valued at over RM332 million in an ongoing probe into a scrap metal and e-waste smuggling syndicate. As reported by The Star, the syndicate is accused of bribing enforcement officers, causing a loss of more than RM950 million in export tax revenue over the last six years. 'MACC has frozen 324 bank accounts, comprising 142 corporate accounts and 182 individual accounts, totalling nearly RM150mil. Assets seized so far amount to about RM183mil,' an MACC source told The Star. The source also revealed that 27 witnesses have been questioned, including a key suspect, whose statement was recorded today. No arrests have been made, and investigations are ongoing. According to the daily, Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin, senior director of the MACC's Special Operations Division, confirmed that the commission is actively working to identify those involved in the smuggling syndicate. The investigation is being conducted under Sections 16 and 18 of the MACC Act 2009, which cover bribery and false claims, as well as possible violations of anti-money laundering laws. Additionally, agencies like the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN), Customs Department, and Bank Negara are investigating related offences under the Income Tax Act 1967 and the Customs Act 1967. On July 14, Bernama reported that the first raid was conducted at a three-storey luxury bungalow in Batu Maung, Penang at around 6am Monday. The bungalow is believed to belong to a businessman who owns a scrap metal company. Officers conducted a search after a domestic helper opened the door to the residence, though the company owner, reportedly a foreign national, was away on business.
