KUCHING (July 16): Language and literacy are crucial building blocks in ensuring Sarawak's readiness for the future as the state strides confidently towards a high-income economy by 2030.
In an exclusive interview, Sarawak English Literacy Conference (SELC) 2025 advisor, Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu, highlighted the pivotal role of English literacy in strengthening Sarawak's human capital development and preparing the younger generation for the demands of an increasingly globalised and technology-driven world.
'English is not just a language; it is a tool for access,' said Rentap, who is Sarawak's Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development.
'When we look at our Post-COVID Development Strategy (PCDS 2030), and the direction and directives from our Premier, it is clear that economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social inclusivity will require a highly skilled workforce, especially in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
'But this cannot exist in isolation. STEM must be accompanied by strong English literacy, beginning from early childhood.'
Scheduled to take place from Sept 17 to 19, 2025, at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here, SELC 2025 is designed as a strategic platform to support the Sarawak Government's ongoing efforts to elevate English language proficiency across all levels of education, from early childhood to the tertiary level.
Rentap emphasised the significance of introducing synthetic phonics at an early age, noting its proven effectiveness in building strong language foundations that can later support science and technological learning.
'This conference brings in internationally renowned speakers in phonics, education, and STEM — all of whom will share valuable methodologies and global best practices.
'With support from international experts from Jolly Learning and STEM Learning UK, we want our educators, not just in Sarawak but from across Malaysia and beyond, to benefit from this knowledge-sharing opportunity,' he said.
He also touched on the strategic importance of investing in educators themselves, asserting that a strong education system depends not only on the curriculum but also on the capacity and commitment of its teachers.
'If we are to prepare our youth for tomorrow's challenges, from hydrogen energy to aerospace, from carbon management to artificial intelligence, then our teachers must be equipped with the tools and vision to guide them.'
Describing SELC 2025 as a 'homegrown conference with international ambition', Rentap remarked that the initiative aligns strongly with Sarawak's broader aspirations.
'This is not just an event, it is part of a long-term vision. We are grateful to the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development and the Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, as well as the Sarawak State Education Department and Business Events Sarawak, for their support in making this a reality.'
And with the introduction of free tertiary education in Sarawak from next year, the emphasis on literacy and technical knowledge is more crucial than ever.
'We want our youth to have every opportunity to succeed, not only here in Sarawak but on the global stage. If they are equipped with strong English skills and a foundation in science and technology, they can go anywhere,' Rentap said.
SELC 2025 aspires to influence future educational policies and strategies, helping to position Sarawak as a knowledge-forward and future-ready state by 2030.
The conference is jointly organised by Place Borneo and Layar Education Development Committee in collaboration with Jolly Learning and STEM Learning UK.

Published on: Thursday, July 24, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 24, 2025 By: Kazalinah Kamaludin Text Size: Nizam (sixth, right) and Fahmi (centre) with recipients of the 2025 Creative Content Fund (DKK) and Borneo TV Programme Fund at the DKK Sabah award ceremony. Kota Kinabalu: A total of 42 Creative Content Fund (DKK) applications from production companies in Sabah and Sarawak, worth RM7.43 million, have been approved from 2022 up to this month. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the approved applications covered various categories, including feature and short films, documentaries, marketing, scriptwriting and post-production, creating over 1,245 job opportunities. 'As of this month, the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) has also received 36 applications for the Borneo TV Programme Fund and 24 for the Post-Production Fund. 'All applications are evaluated transparently and with integrity by a committee comprising professional panelists and ministry representatives,' he said at the presentation of Creative Content Fund letters of acceptance to Sabah's creative industry players in Sabah, here, Tuesday night. Also present were Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, Communications Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Finas Chairman Datuk Hans Isaac, Finas Chief Executive Officer Datuk Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Information Department Director-General Julina Johan. Fahmi said under the DKK, 14 local production companies have been offered the Borneo TV Programme Fund, including six from Sabah. He said the six Sabah companies received approvals amounting to RM1.15 million, expected to create over 200 new jobs. 'As for the Post-Production Fund, nine companies received offers, one of which is from Sabah. For Sabah, one project was approved with a value of nearly RM240,000, adding value to the post-filming process,' he said. He added that the total amount approved for the seven Sabah companies under the Borneo TV Programme Fund and the Post-Production Fund stood at RM1.39 million. Fahmi said various success stories have emerged through government grants and incentives, including the film 'Blood Brothers: Bara Naga', which grossed RM73.6 million, 'Bleat!' which made a mark at Cannes, and most recently, 'Ejen Ali The Movie 2', which opened in Indonesia with over 200,000 viewers in its first week. Fahmi added that the Communications Ministry, through Finas, has agreed to collaborate with Borneo TV via the Borneo TV Programme Fund, with content produced by its recipients to also be aired on the Borneo TV platform. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the DKK has opened vast opportunities for the people of Sabah to showcase their stories, culture and heritage through various mediums such as films, documentaries and television programmes. 'Sabah possesses extraordinary socio-cultural diversity – with more than 30 ethnic groups and over 200 sub-ethnicities. This makes the State one of the richest regions in terms of oral, visual and narrative culture, which deserves attention as a source of authentic content,' he said. He added that Sabah's natural beauty gives it a distinct advantage to be translated into creative content capable of attracting both local and international audiences. Saudi investors target $4 billion Syria reconstruction deals

DAMASCUS: A high-profile Saudi investment delegation of 120 business leaders arrived in Syria on Wednesday for a major economic forum aimed at securing reconstruction deals worth 15 billion riyals ($4 billion). The visit marks a significant step in Gulf efforts to stabilise Syria after its 14-year civil war. Saudi Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih is leading the group, state broadcaster Al-Ekhbariya reported. The ministry stated the forum seeks to 'explore cooperation opportunities and sign agreements that enhance sustainable development and serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples.' The oil-rich kingdom has emerged as a key supporter of Syria's post-Assad government, formed after Islamist-led rebels ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December. Saudi Arabia and Qatar previously committed to settling Syria's $15 million World Bank debt. The investment push follows the US lifting most Syria sanctions in May, with President Donald Trump fully dismantling remaining restrictions this month. Trump's move aligns with Gulf states' strategy to reintegrate Syria into global markets. However, Damascus faces ongoing instability. Recent clashes between Druze fighters and Sunni tribes in Sweida province escalated into Israeli airstrikes, killing over 1,300 people according to monitors. - AFP
