An Afrikaner man who is part of the 49 people who went over to the US as 'refugees' has spoken out about how devastating it was to leave behind his five bedroom home and other possessions while fleeing from racial persecution in South Africa.
Speaking to the BBC, Charl Kleinhaus told the media outlet that he did not go over to the US for fun but that rather, he had no choice in the matter.
"I had to leave a five-bedroom house which I will lose now because I'm not going to pay for it. I also left my car behind, my dogs, and my mother. I didn't come here for fun. But my children are safe. If you're white, you're wrong in South Africa," Kleinhaus said.

The 'refugee' went on to say that white people are called land thieves and racist in the country. "I had nothing to do with apartheid. Nothing."
Kleinhaus, however, enjoyed being welcomed by the Donald Trump administration and said that everyone who agreed to go to the US will have to start over as they have left their wealth here in the country.
This is how the US government will assist in resettling families:
Legal entry and work authorisation: Refugees gain lawful US entry and immediate work permission via a Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record) and an Employment Authorization Document.
Resettlement assistance: The Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) will provide the Afrikaners with initial housing, job placement, and school enrolment support through resettlement agencies.
Financial and medical aid: Eligible refugees access Refugee Cash Assistance (RCA) and Refugee Medical Assistance (RMA) for up to four months (post-May 2025 arrivals), covering basic needs like food and healthcare.
Federal benefits like Medicaid and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) may also apply.
Family reunification: Within two years, the Afrikaner refugees can file Form I-730 to petition for spouses and unmarried children under 21 to join them in the US.
Path to permanent residency: After one year, the refugees can apply for a Green Card, offering a route to citizenship.
Under 'normal' circumstances, to qualify, applicants must be outside the US (or, in rare cases, within their home country if authorised by the US President) and demonstrate past persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution.

Safety concerns lead SPCA to halt mobile clinic services in Khayelitsha

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has withdrawn mobile clinic services in Khayelitsha following two attempted armed robberies. Image: Supplied The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has withdrawn its Mobile Clinic Services in Khayelitsha after two attempted armed robberies on their staff in just a matter of days. In a harrowing incident, one of their mobile clinic operators shared how they managed to flee with their lives and saved four cats and 12 dogs, during a near hijacking incident. The team's SPCA vehicle was targeted twice in the same community in Khayelitsha in just two days. The operator, chose to remain anonymous due to safety concerns and described in horror how he faced two gun-wielding hijackers : 'I drove for my life and theirs. 'I'm the breadwinner at home. My immediate concern was what will happen to my family if I am not here anymore and what will happen to the animals in my van. 'Then I drove for my life and theirs. 'One gunman was in front of the vehicle and the other at my side window. I am thankful to God that I was able to get away.' Belinda Abraham, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA's Communications Officer said their staff had gone beyond the call of duty by rescuing the lives of the animals and their own. Video Player is loading. 'Inside the vehicle at the time were four cats and twelve dogs, all of which were being returned home following sterilisation at the SPCA's Animal Hospital. 'While the staff member escaped physically unharmed, the trauma of these attacks has left the mobile clinic team visibly shaken. 'Counselling and psychological support are being provided through the SPCA's staff wellness initiatives.' The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has withdrawn mobile clinic services in Khayelitsha following two attempted armed robberies. Image: Supplied 'This is devastating for the animals of Khayelitsha,' said Abraham. 'Crime threatens human lives and now it has robbed animals of essential veterinary care. 'The SPCA mobile clinics are a lifeline for pets in this community, pro‐viding vaccinations, sterilisation, and parasite treatments in an area where access to veterinary care is already so limited. We are incredibly saddened that it has come to this. 'Our priority remains the safety of our staff, who often work under extreme risk to provide services to animals in crime‐ridden areas. While we continue to seek safer ways to pro‐actively serve in these communities, our commitment to animal welfare in Khayelitsha will for the immediate future be limited to Inspectorate ser‐vices only. 'In November, inspectors who were attempting to remove two dogs from their owners were lucky to escape with their lives after bricks were thrown at them in Delft. Urgent action needed as Ga-Rankuwa parents protest unsafe school on wetland

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, visits Bachana Mokwena Primary School, which is built on a wetland in Ga-Rankuwa. Image: Oupa Mokoena / Independent Newspapers A group of parents in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, staged a protest outside the YMCA centre, where Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, was launching the 2026 online admissions system, to express their concerns about the construction of a local school on a wetland. The parents, from Bachana Mokwena Primary School, have kept their children home from school since it reopened for the second term on Tuesday due to the unsafe conditions. The classrooms for Grade R and Foundation Phase, which accommodate around 400 learners, are surrounded by underground water, sparking fears that the buildings could collapse at any moment. Chiloane has just kicked off the application process for parents and guardians seeking to enrol their children in Grade 1 and Grade 8 for the 2026 academic year, when the group of parents arrived at the centre and began protesting. Next Stay Close ✕ Protesters demanded that Chiloane come out to address their concerns about the school's safety. Chiloane assured the parents that he would visit the school to assess the wetland situation and then address their grievances afterwards. According to Agnes Mashibymi, the school governing body chairperson, children in Grade R and Foundation Phase cannot play outside due to the excessive water surrounding their classrooms. "Parents are anxious, fearing the school buildings could collapse at any moment, and worried that the unhealthy environment could lead to children falling ill," she said. A group of parents in Ga-Rankuwa staged a protest over concerns about the safety of Bachana Mokwena Primary School built on a wetland. Image: Oupa Mokoena / Independent Newspapers Mashibymi claimed that parents have approached various departments to voice their concerns about the school's unsafe environment, but their pleas for assistance have been met with indifference. "We were at the Department of Education in Johannesburg yesterday, and the HOD told us that this matter has not reached his office. We decided to take advantage of the MEC's visit to confront him about our issues," she said. Moses Makhubela, one of the parents, lamented that despite escalating the issue to the relevant authorities since 2021, no one appears to be taking it seriously. "It's like they are not taking the lives of our children seriously. I am worried about my child's education, but I can't replace my child if he gets injured at school," he said. After assessing the situation at the school, Chiloane noted that the presence of water is causing the classrooms to deteriorate rapidly. He announced that the department will cordon off the affected classroom area and deploy mobile classrooms to accommodate learners starting next week. Grades 4 and 7 learners have been instructed to report to school on Friday. Chiloane also cautioned parents against closing schools, saying that doing so is against the law. He said the department will send a hydro-geologist to the school next week to assess the situation. Local councillor Violet Phalwane said the core issue is the underground water, and she had previously escalated the matter to the City of Tshwane, which promised to send engineers to the school. "Unfortunately, the learners can't come to school because it is unsafe for them to attend school. My problem is that the problem has affected other learners from other grades," she said.

The eThekwini Municipality said disaster management teams are engaged in efforts to restore water and electricity services that were disrupted during the fire. About 122 informal structures were destroyed when a fire spread through Kennedy Road Informal Settlement on Saturday. Image: Department of Transport and Human Settlements KwaZulu-Natal Transport and Human Settlements MEC Siboniso Duma said he is in talks with Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane on the incident. Duma said a total of 122 shacks were destroyed in a fire that was caused by a burning candle. 'We wish to report that a roving team involving officials from the national department of human settlements, the provincial department of human settlements, and the eThekwini Municipality is already working out a plan to speed up the delivery of building material,' Duma said. KZN Cogta MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi deployed disaster management teams, accompanied by the social partners, to provide relief to the community. Buthelezi extended his condolences to the bereaved family and assured the family of the department's full support during this difficult time. On Saturday, a fire swept through the Kennedy Road Informal Settlement, destroying approximately 122 informal structures. Image: KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Disaster teams are on the ground, conducting assessments, offering immediate relief, and coordinating any assistance for the victims. Given the cold front bringing rain and low temperatures this weekend, Buthelezi advised the community to exercise caution when using fire for warmth. 'On behalf of the provincial government, we extend our deepest condolences to the grieving family. As a department, we are deeply concerned by this incident, which is the fourth of its kind in this area during the current winter season,' Buthelezi said. 'We urge communities to exercise extreme caution, especially during colder days when the use of open flames, such as izimbawula and heaters, significantly increases the risk of fires.'
