KUCHING: Petroliam Nasional Bhd's (Petronas) move to trim its workforce stems from global challenges and is not connected to the national oil firm's issues with Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros). Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the restructuring process is necessary amid the decline in crude oil prices.
Advertisement He also plans to meet with Petronas to get more details on the restructuring process. 'That is why Petronas has to relook its entire operation. I'm planning a meeting with them to get a briefing on the matter and to ensure that the number of layoffs can be reduced, if not avoided,' he told reporters attending the Aidiladha sacrificial event at Taman Hussein Mosque here today. On June 5, Petronas president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Tengku Muhammad Taufik Tengku Aziz reportedly said the national oil firm is cutting 10 per cent of its workforce to cope with challenging operating conditions, particularly due to falling crude prices. Tengku Muhammad Taufik said the number of staff involved in the downsizing process currently stands at around 5,000, and those affected will be notified in stages next year.
Advertisement On May 21, the federal and state governments reached an understanding on matters involving Petronas and Petros. According to the joint declaration, Petronas will continue its functions, activities, responsibilities and obligations entrusted to the company in Malaysia, under the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA 1974) and its regulations. Any agreements and arrangements between Petronas and its subsidiaries with third parties for the purpose of liquefied natural gas (LNG) sales from upstream operations through to LNG exports to foreign parties remain unaffected. A media statement by the Prime Minister's Office following the joint declaration said all relevant federal and state laws relating to gas distribution in Sarawak are to co-exist and be respected by all parties. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? NGO questions Native Court's role in share dispute

Published on: Thursday, July 24, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 24, 2025 By: Jonathan Nicholas Text Size: Thien (second left) with Hishamuddin (middle) and Jerry (second right) during a press conference on Thursday. KOTA KINABALU: A family-run transport company in Keningau faces uncertainty following a Native Court decision that transferred a 50 per cent stake to a widow, sparking concern among family members and legal advocates. The shares, originally held in trust by a younger brother for administrative ease, were transferred to his widow after he died in 2020 via a Native Court heirship order. The Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO), which is supporting the Thien family, said the Native Court's involvement in company shares went beyond its legal powers. MHO secretary-general Datuk Hishamuddin Hashim said on Thursday that corporate assets fall under civil jurisdiction, citing Section 5(1) of the Native Courts Ordinance 1967 and Section 9 of the Native Courts Enactment 1992. The widow now reportedly plans to sell the stake, effectively sidelining the siblings still running the business, which has served the Keningau–Kota Kinabalu–Menumbok route since 2000. Sabah MHO coordinator Jerry Jaimeh said the siblings were unaware of the Native Court proceedings and had no opportunity to apply for civil probate. The Native Affairs Department has yet to respond to MHO's appeal as the family considers civil court action, though time constraints threaten the future of the business. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Published on: Thursday, July 24, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 24, 2025 Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Land and Surveys Director Datuk Bernard Liew, who is also the Sabah Chief Mineral Surveyor, clarified on Thursday that no prospecting licence has been issued to Bumi Suria Sdn Bhd under the Sabah Mining Ordinance 1960. He said any statement, promotion or action suggesting the company holds such a licence is baseless and not officially approved by the state's mining authority. Liew reminded that all mineral prospecting activities in Sabah must be licensed under Sections 6 and 8 of the Ordinance, and must comply with relevant technical and legal requirements. He emphasised that the department takes seriously any public statement through media that could mislead the public. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
