Savarkar Jayanti 2025: Top 10 quotes by India's most controversial freedom fighter
Savarkar Jayanti is celebrated on May 28, marking the birth of Vinayak Savarkar in 1883. On this day, admirers of Savarkar remember his role in India's independence movement, his philosophy of Hindutva, and his resilience during years of harsh imprisonment under British rule.
The day is observed across various parts of India, particularly in Maharashtra, with speeches, discussions, and tributes that highlight his life and ideals. Political leaders, especially from nationalist ideologies, pay homage to his contributions.
According to the Ministry of Culture, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar (1883–1966), also known as Veer Savarkar, was a freedom fighter, poet, writer, and political ideologue.
While studying at Fergusson College in Pune, he founded the secret society 'Abhinav Bharat' in 1904, advocating armed resistance against British rule.
In London, he established the 'Free India Society' and authored The First War of Independence, highlighting the 1857 revolt.
Arrested in 1910 for his revolutionary activities, Savarkar attempted a daring escape in Marseilles but was recaptured and sentenced to 50 years in the Cellular Jail, Andamans.
'This did not, in any way, dampen his spirit or quench his thirst for freedom,' the ministry added.
After his release in 1937, he joined the Hindu Mahasabha and served as its president for about seven years. 'Veer Savarkar worked relentlessly for the removal of untouchability through the Hindu Mahasabha.'
The ministry said that in 1951, he dissolved the revolutionary organisation 'Abhinav Bharat' and devoted his time and energy to the ideals of the Hindu Mahasabha. 'The sacred soil of Bharat is my home, the blood of her brave is my inspiration, and the triumph of her will is my dream.'
'The world respects those who can stand up for themselves and fight their own battles.'
'A country that does not recognise its heroes, its martyrs, and its warriors is doomed to decay.'
'Independence is never given, it is always taken.'
'Hindu society must rise above the differences of caste and creed if it wants to see the dawn of freedom.'
'Cowards never make history, it is the brave who carve their names in the annals of time.' 'Our only duty is to keep fighting for our nation, come what may.'
'An educated mind is the greatest weapon in the struggle for freedom.'
'A nation's past is its foundation; it must be preserved and honoured.'
'A true leader leads by example, inspires by action, and empowers by vision.'

Students Fall Ill After Karnataka School Water Poisoned To Remove Muslim Headmaster; 3 Held
The accused include Sagar Patil, the taluk president of Shriram Sena, a right-wing Hindu group, and two others Three people, including a right-wing group leader, have been arrested for allegedly poisoning the drinking water tank at a government primary school in Hulikatti village, Belagavi district, Karnataka. The act was reportedly carried out with the intent to frame the school's Muslim headmaster and push for his transfer. According to the police, the accused include Sagar Patil, the taluk president of Shriram Sena, a right-wing Hindu group. Patil and two others allegedly contaminated the water source used by schoolchildren. The motive was rooted in religious bias and an effort to create communal tension in the area, the police said. The incident came to light about two weeks ago, when several children reportedly fell ill after consuming the contaminated water. Meanwhile, no casualties were reported, and all the affected students have since recovered. All three accused have been filed under relevant sections related to endangering public safety and promoting enmity. In response to the incident, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah strongly condemned the act, calling it a 'heinous crime" driven by religious hatred and intolerance. He also slammed right-wing groups and the BJP who he said often support such actions, asking whether they would take responsibility for this incident. 'Will Pramod Mutalik take responsibility for this incident? Will @BYVijayendra take responsibility? Will @RAshokaBJP take responsibility?" he asked. ಬೆಳಗಾವಿ ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯ ಸವದತ್ತಿ ತಾಲೂಕಿನ ಹೂಲಿಕಟ್ಟಿ ಗ್ರಾಮದ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಯ ಮುಖ್ಯೋಪಾಧ್ಯಾಯರು ಮುಸ್ಲಿಂ ಸಮುದಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಸೇರಿದವರು, ಅವರನ್ನು ತಮ್ಮ ಊರಿನಿಂದ ಬೇರೆಡೆಗೆ ವರ್ಗಾವಣೆ ಮಾಡಿಸಬೇಕೆಂಬ ದುರುದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಶಾಲಾಮಕ್ಕಳ ಕುಡಿಯುವ ನೀರಿಗೆ ವಿಷ ಹಾಕಿದ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮ ಸೇನೆಯ ತಾಲೂಕು ಅಧ್ಯಕ್ಷ ಸಾಗರ ಪಾಟೀಲ ಸೇರಿದಂತೆ ಒಟ್ಟು ಮೂವರನ್ನು…— Siddaramaiah (@siddaramaiah) August 3, 2025 'Leaders who always support such socially destructive acts should now come forward and atone for their sins," he added. The Chief Minister further warned that all forms of extremism pose a serious threat to society and that the state has formed a special task force to curb hate speech and communal violence. He also appealed to the public to remain alert and report such activities. 'Congratulations to the police personnel who foiled the evil plot to massacre children. I have full confidence that the judicial system will deliver appropriate punishment to the culprits who committed such a heinous act," Siddaramaiah added. 'Sanatani terror' remarks by Prithviraj Chavan and NCP (SP)'s Awhad spark row; BJP hits back
Senior Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan 's remarks suggesting the use of the term "Sanatani or Hindu terrorist" instead of " saffron terrorism " and NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad's "sanatani terrorism" barb have triggered a row in Maharashtra, evoking sharp rebuke from the BJP. Adding fuel to the fire, another NCP (SP) leader, Rohit Pawar, on Sunday drew parallels between Mahatma Gandhi's assassin, Nathuram Godse, and the perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack. If you must, then say 'Sanatani terrorist' or 'Hindu terrorist'". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This new air conditioner cools down a room in just seconds News of the Discovery Undo He, however, stressed that terrorism has no caste or religion. Echoing Chavan, Awhad on Saturday stated that "Sanatani terrorism must be acknowledged". Live Events "It is not a recent phenomenon; it has existed since ancient times," Awhad posted on X and cited various historical incidents where, according to him, thinkers and social reformers were persecuted by what he described as "Sanatani terrorists". "Those who harassed Lord Buddha, killed Buddhist monks, opposed the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and conspired against Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj were all sanatani terrorists," Awhad alleged. "Those who threw cow dung at Savitribai Phule, boycotted Mahatma Phule, attacked Govind Pansare, Narendra Dabholkar, M M Kalburgi and Gauri Lankesh, and denied water to the oppressed were Sanatani terrorists," he alleged. Awhad claimed that those who shot Mahatma Gandhi while he was going to prayer, and those who view Manusmriti as more important than the Constitution written by Dr Ambedkar, are the same (sanatani terrorists). On Sunday, Rohit Pawar echoed similar views. "Whether it was Nathuram Godse who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi or the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack, the root of terrorism lies in extremist ideology. Terrorism has no colour, only radical thought is its foundation," Pawar posted on X. He stated that Hinduism has always supported equality, humanity, and the teachings of saints, stressing that the tradition based on Manusmriti cannot be part of Hinduism. "We burnt Manusmriti in the past, we burn it today, and we will continue to burn it in the future", he added. Pawar, grandnephew of veteran politician Sharad Pawar, questioned the 'silence' of so-called Hindutva leaders over various social issues concerning farmers, women, and youth. "Today, farmers are in distress, women's safety and unemployment are pressing issues. Why don't the so-called Hindutva leaders raise their voices on these? Don't they see Hindu farmers committing suicide or Hindu youth wandering for jobs?" he questioned. Hitting back, Maharashtra BJP chief spokesperson Keshav Upadhye on Sunday evening accused Awhad and Pawar of peddling "Hindu hatred" for "appeasement politics". "Pawar and Awhad's Hindu hatred and appeasement politics are not stopping. The examples they give are not supported by the Hindu community. In fact, those people were considered criminals. But it was Awhad who once glorified terrorists like Ishrat Jahan. Have you forgotten Batla House, where terrorists were killed in an encounter and Sonia Gandhi was reportedly in tears?" Upadhye posted on X. He alleged that the Congress tried to associate terrorism with the saffron colour, which symbolises sacrifice. "It was an attempt to label Hindus as terrorists". The BJP leader asked Awhad if he would mention Muslim terrorists and condemn the brutal killing of Hindus in Pahalgam. "You have repeatedly used the phrase 'Sanatani terrorist'. Can you once mention Muslim terrorists and condemn those who killed Hindus in Pahalgam? You are quick to defame Sanatan Dharma but hesitate to name Muslim terrorists. Those who glorify Ishrat Jahan have no moral right to talk about Sanatan Dharma," he added. He accused Rohit Pawar of trying to frame a Hindu terrorism narrative. "Did you remember Hindus when their place of worship was desecrated in Daund (a town in Pune district)? When your government (MVA) jailed Navneet Rana for reciting Hanuman Chalisa, did you think of Hindus then? Now you remember Hindu farmers and youth just to spread a narrative of Hindu terrorism. People will not fall for this hypocrisy. The Hindu community sees through your true face," he said. The BJP had described the acquittal of all the seven accused in the Malegaon blast case as a slap on the face of Congress for defaming Hindus by coining the term saffron terrorism.

Tipu Sultan laid foundation for KRS Dam, says Karnataka Minister Mahadevappa
Last Updated: Mandya (Karnataka), Aug 3 (PTI) Karnataka Minister H C Mahadevappa on Sunday said 18th Century AD Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan laid foundation for the Krishna Raja Sagar dam in Srirangapatna. Karnataka government's water resource department website says the construction of K R S dam was commenced in the year 1911 during the reign of then Mysore king, Krishna Raja Wadiyar Bahadur, and completed in the year 1931. Renowned civil engineer and Bharat Ratna awardee Sir M Visvesvaraya developed the project, it says. The dam is built across the Cauvery River near Kannambadi village in Srirangapatna taluk of Mandya District. At an event on Sunday, Mahadevappa said, 'Tipu Sultan was the first who laid the foundation stone (of the dam) but nobody has the courage to say this. B R Ambedkar has said that those who don't know history cannot create history." Elaborating further, he said there was a mosque on one side and a temple on the other, where Azan (call for Islamic prayer) and the temple bell rings would go simultaneously and Tipu Sultan would listen to both. According to the Social Welfare Minister, Sultan had eradicated Devadasi system, pioneered land reforms and introduced sericulture in India for the first time. 'He was the towering freedom fighter who fought against the colonial British rulers," Mahadevappa said.
