Midfielder set to make crucial step to join Liverpool

One midfielder is set to catch Arne Slot's eye and make a crucial step towards joining Liverpool in the process. Right now, getting someone through the doors to play in the middle of the park is not necessarily a priority for the Reds. However, he only featured sparsely under Slot last season, so he won't be a huge loss. His minutes can be take on by Trey Nyoni, who has caught the eye in pre-season so far. However, long-term Liverpool will still want to sign a 'destroyer' in midfield. They tried to bring in Martin Zubimendi, who is that kind of profile, last summer and failed. Ryan Gravenberch has been converted to play the role, and he's done a stupendous job. Behind him, Wataru Endo has been an astute deputy and a loyal servant for the Reds. Ideally, Liverpool will want to add a more long-term solution to Endo's role in the team. The club's sporting director Richard Hughes will want to bring someone in who can really push Gravenberch for his position. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range Anfield Watch that Liverpool are interested in Mikel Jauregizar. He's someone very closely monitored by the club's scouts and high up on the shortlist of players Liverpool will look to target for that midfield 'destroyer' role. The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the best young midfielders in Spain. He's got great ability going forward in terms of his passing and he covers a lot of ground, with high energy and stamina. Both are crucial aspects when it comes to play under Slot, and being able to withstand the physical and technical demands of his style of play. Jauregizar's game intelligence is also very high, which often sees him picking up smart positions on the pitch and being able to intercept opposition passes. Now he's set to face Liverpool at Anfield in an exciting double header on Monday. This will be an opportunity for the club's scouts and coaching staff to see him at a closer lense. It will be an opportunity for him to catch the eye and make one crucial step closer to joining the Reds in the future. If Jauregizar plays well, we've seen it all before, the chances of him joining Liverpool will inevitably increase. Just take a look at previous examples of players who've caught the eye against the Reds and ended-up joining. From Sadio Mane while at Southampton to Dominik Szoboszlai while at Red Bull Salzburg and then while at RB Leipzig in pre-season. Then there is Takumi Minamino and Darwin Nunez. Or Alexander Isak for that matter, who could be joining Liverpool this summer. On Monday, Jauregizar has the chance to put himself among those names and take another step towards one day ending up at Anfield.

Burnley in talks over move for Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka

Burnley are in talks to sign Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. The Athletic reported in July that Dubravka's Newcastle future was dependent on the arrival of another goalkeeper, and the club completed the signing of Aaron Ramsdale on an initial season-long loan from Southampton on Saturday. Advertisement Nick Pope is Newcastle's current first-choice goalkeeper, while the club also has Odysseas Vlachodimos, John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie on their books. James Trafford, Burnley's No.1 as the club secured promotion from the Championship last season, joined Manchester City in July after the club matched an offer made by Newcastle. Dubravka would be Burnley's second goalkeeping addition of the summer, having already completed the signing of Max Weiss, 21, from German second tier side Karlsruhe. Vaclav Hladky was Trafford's deputy for Scott Parker's side last season. Dubravka, 36, joined Newcastle in January 2018, initially on a loan deal from Sparta Prague, and has made 179 appearances for the club, winning the club's Player of the Year award for the 2019-20 season. The Slovakia international, who has been capped on 53 occasions, spent the first half of the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Manchester United before returning to St James' Park that January.

Burnley reach agreement over Lesley Ugochukwu transfer from Chelsea

Burnley are set to strengthen in midfield ahead of their return to the Premier League after reaching an agreement with Chelsea to sign Lesley Ugochukwu. The France youth international, 21, has been granted permission to travel for medical tests and complete a permanent move to Turf Moor. If all goes to plan, Ugochukwu will put pen to paper on a four-year contract — significantly boosting head coach Scott Parker's options in the number six and number eight roles. Advertisement Central midfielder Josh Brownhill, who scored 18 goals in 44 appearances for Burnley last season, left the club last month as a free agent upon the expiration of his contract. Burnley have already made 10 first-team signings this summer including defenders Kyle Walker and Axel Tuanzebe, and wide forwards Jacob Bruun Larsen, Loum Tchaouna and Bashir Humphreys. The Athletic reported in the Transfer DealSheet on June 3 that Chelsea believed Ugochukwu would generate a lot of interest this summer following what was viewed as a positive loan spell at Southampton. Ugochukwu, 21, joined Southampton on loan in August 2024, a year after signing a seven-year contract with Chelsea. He played 31 games at the south-coast club, registering three goals and assists in all competitions, for the south coast side but they became the first side in the history of the league to be relegated with seven games remaining. Ugochukwu gradually established himself as a first-team regular for Southampton, starting their final 11 Premier League matches. He scored a 93rd-minute equaliser away to West Ham United in April which ensured Southampton avoided the unwanted record of the Premier League's lowest points tally. Ugochukwu moved to England at 19 from his boyhood club Rennes. He made his senior debut for Rennes just after his seventeenth birthday, becoming the club's fourth youngest debutant at the time. The central midfielder played 15 games in all competitions for Chelsea in the 2023-24 season, his first in the Premier League. He is also a France Under-23 international and has played 27 times for his national team at youth level. ()
