Shura Council's panel discusses Draft Law on Geospatial Data
The meeting began with a presentation of the rationale and objectives of the draft law. According to the Authority's representatives, the law seeks to establish a comprehensive regulatory framework for setting national policies, standards, and technical specifications governing the collection, production, exchange, and dissemination of national geospatial data and information.
It further aims to unify the mechanisms for geospatial data production across both the public and private sectors in support of sustainable development plans and national infrastructure, and to enhance institutional integration among the relevant entities.
The meeting included extensive discussions on the articles of the draft law and explored potential mechanisms for its implementation by various state institutions.
The deliberations also assessed the law's alignment with existing national legislation and regulations, as well as its consistency with international agreements to which the Sultanate of Oman is a party in this domain.
The Council held its eighth meeting for the second annual session (2024–2025) of the tenth term on Wednesday, under the chairmanship of Hamoud Ahmed Al Yahyaei, Head of the Committee, in the presence of Committee members.
It is worth noting that as part of its study of the draft law, the Committee had previously hosted a number of academic experts from Sultan Qaboos University to seek their input on various technical and scientific aspects of the legislation.
On another note, the Committee also reviewed its report on the assessment of the annual report of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, in accordance with Article (55) of the Law of the Council of Oman, which stipulates: "Service Ministers shall submit to the Shura Council an annual report on the stages of implementation of the projects pertaining to the ministries they head. The Council may summon any of them to present a statement on specific matters within the scope of their respective ministries and to discuss such matters with them."

British Omani Society hosts high-level talks on trade cooperation
London, UK – The British Omani Society (BOS), in collaboration with the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in London, hosted a high-level panel discussion and networking reception on Thursday to explore strategic business opportunities between the United Kingdom and Oman. Held at BOS headquarters in Mayfair, the event brought together senior officials and private sector leaders from both countries. It came at a pivotal moment in the ongoing UK-GCC Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations, offering a platform to reaffirm Oman's position as a stable and growing destination for trade and investment. Richard Stanford, Chair of BOS, opened the evening with a welcome address outlining the society's role in fostering bilateral engagement. The panel discussion was led by Pankaj Khimji, Adviser for Foreign Trade and International Cooperation at Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, who provided an overview of Oman's foreign trade priorities. Other panellists included Sir Philip Barton, former Permanent Undersecretary at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, and Chris Breeze, Managing Director of Ellipse Projects UK and Chair of the BOS Business Subcommittee. Sayyid Badr honoured in Bulgaria for peace efforts
Sofia, Bulgaria – H E Sayyid Badr bin Hamad al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, received the Badge of Honour of the President of Bulgaria on Friday in recognition of Oman's key humanitarian and diplomatic efforts. The award was conferred by Rumen Radev, Bulgarian President, for H E Sayyid Badr's crucial role in securing the release of Bulgarian crew members from the hijacked Galaxy Leader vessel and for Oman's broader contributions to regional peace and stability. The honour was presented during H E Sayyid Badr's official visit to Bulgaria, which included high-level talks and a joint press conference with his Bulgarian counterpart Georgi Georgiev. In their address to the media following political discussions held in Sofia, both ministers underscored the strength and depth of bilateral ties between Oman and Bulgaria. Georgiev expressed Bulgaria's 'deep appreciation' for Oman's humanitarian intervention instrumental in the release of the detained Bulgarian sailors and highlighted Muscat's ongoing diplomatic efforts in conflict zones. He affirmed that Bulgaria remains committed to further enhancing cooperation with Oman across several sectors.
