Sweden crushes Germany at the Euros for the first time and tops group

Sweden put down a statement 4-1 win over Germany at the Women's European Championship on Saturday and secured a potentially easier route to the final. The record eight-time champion was dominated although Sweden's task was made easier after Germany forward Carlotta Wamser was sent off–barely half an hour in–for swatting a ball away from the goal-line with her arm. By that point Sweden was up 2-1 after goals from Stina Blackstenius and teenager Smilla Holmberg canceled Jule Brand's early opener for Germany.
Fridolina Rolfö calmly slotted the penalty after Wamser's red card and substitute Lina Hurtig wrapped up the scoring late on to cap a miserable night for Germany which conceded four goals for the first time in any Euro match including qualifiers. It was the first time Sweden beat Germany at the Euros and ensured it topped Group C with maximum points and avoided the possibility of facing World Cup champion and Euro 2025 favorite Spain in the semifinals. Sweden will face the runner-up of Group D in the quarterfinals with Germany facing the team that tops that group. That will be France, England, or the Netherlands. France has six points and plays the Netherlands which has three points along with defending champion England. England plays Wales also on Sunday. Germany and Sweden had already qualified for the knockout stages but the match was decisive for top spot in the group with a draw being enough for Sweden thanks to a better goal difference.
There were four good chances in the opening five minutes and Germany took the lead in the seventh minute when Brand ran onto a smart throughball from Wamser and fired in. It was the first goal Sweden conceded in the tournament but it recovered from that setback just five minutes later. A rapid counterattack saw Blackstenius collect the ball near the halfway line and race into the area before slotting calmly past Ann-Katrin Berger. Sweden led in somewhat fortunate circumstances in the 25th. Holmberg sprinted down the right and into the area and was tackled by Germany defender Sarai Linder who inadvertently kicked the ball off the Swedish teen's shin and it ricocheted into the net. It was a first international goal for the 18-year-old Holmberg who recently graduated from high school. Matters swiftly went from bad to worse for Germany when Wamser was shown a straight red card for blocking a shot by Rolfö with her arm. Wamser was in the team in place of Giulia Gwinn and the injured Germany captain put her arm around the young defender when she left the pitch in tears. Rolfö dispatched the penalty into the bottom left corner. Sweden's attack was relentless in the first half but with the result seemingly decided it slacked off after the break although Hurtig tapped in another in the 80th.

Luka Modric lands in Italy to sign with AC Milan after 13 seasons at Real Madrid

At age 39, Luka Modrić is going to try and help restore seven-time European champion AC Milan to glory after one of the most disappointing Rossoneri seasons in recent memory. The 2018 Ballon d'Or winner landed in Italy on Monday for a medical with Milan after saying goodbye to Real Madrid following 13 highly successful seasons in Spain. He was expected to sign a one-year contract later with an option for a second season. Modrić grew up supporting Milan because his idol and fellow Croat Zvonimir Boban played for the club in the 1990s. Modrić announced in May that he was leaving Madrid after helping the Spanish powerhouse to 28 titles: six European Cups, six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four Spanish leagues, two Copas del Rey, and five Spanish Super Cups. Milan finished eighth in Serie A last season and missed out on a spot in Europe. The Italian club rehired Massimiliano Allegri as coach after the season, replacing the fired Sergio Conceicao. Allegri won the Italian league for the first time with Milan in 2011, then guided Juventus to five straight titles from 2015 to 2019. Allegri reportedly called former Madrid and Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti to ask about Modrić's form. Then new Milan sporting director Igli Tare traveled to Croatia's training camp last month to seal the deal with Modrić. The deal was made before the Club World Cup, but Modrić couldn't join his new club until he finished playing for Madrid at the tournament in the United States. Madrid was beaten 4-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in the semifinals in Modrić's final match with the club.

Scuffle breaks out at Club World Cup final as Luis Enrique, Donnarumma confront João Pedro

A scuffle broke out after the end of the Club World Cup final on Sunday with Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma appearing to push Chelsea forward João Pedro. Chelsea upset PSG 3-0 to win the title scoring three first-half goals in a match that turned testy with a red card to PSG's João Neves for pulling down Marc Cucurella by his hair along with six yellow cards. Enrique was on the field near the center circle and appeared to push João Pedro on the throat. Donnarumma pushed the 23-year-old forward who fell over. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca moved away Donnarumma a fellow Italian. 'There is a lot of tension and a lot of pressure. ... There was a whole bunch of pushing going on,' Enrique said through a translator. Enrique said he was trying to separate the players. 'This was just the end result of the pressure from the match and I do not have anything else to add,' he said. PSG defender Achraf Hakimi had been gesturing at João Pedro and Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos. The awards presentation did not start until 30 minutes after the final whistle.

Merlier doubles up as Van der Poel denied epic win at Tour de France

CHATEAU, France: Tim Merlier won stage nine of the Tour de France at Chateauroux on Sunday after a heroic long-range escape from Mathieu van der Poel was caught in the final kilometer. There was no change atop the overall standings with Tadej Pogacar now holding a 54sec advantage over Remco Evenepoel in second with French starlet Kevin Vauquelin third. This was a second Tour win for Soudal Quick-Step sprinter Merlier this year, who was first across the line on stage three at Dunkirk. Merlier was led in by team leader Evenepoel. 'It's mad, we are supposed to be helping him (Evenepoel) but he's helping us,' Merlier said. 'I need to make it through the mountains now, I won't be any use to Remco there, but I want to help him in the other ones,' said the 32-year-old. On a sun drenched slog from the Chinon vineyards, Van der Poel and a teammate broke early and built up a lead of 5min 30sec on the flat roads to Chateauroux. Jonas Rickaert won the combativity award for accompanying Van der Poel to within 10km of the line before slumping over his handlebars. 'I'm really happy. That was one of his (Rickaert) dreams, to win the combativity award and that's why we went,' Van der Poel explained. 'In the end we nearly made it but we hadn't expected to get that far,' he said of his 173km breakaway at an average speed on 49.9kph. As with many heroic exploits, their epic escape was ultimately doomed to a gut wrenching narrow failure. But with his gung-ho all-in style Van der Poel grew his Tour de France legend here despite being caught with 700m to go, the plaudits will be both his and Merlier's. 'It's hard to not be able to finish it off, but we put on a good show,' said the Dutch rider. As Van der Poel was reeled in, it looked as though Jonathan Milan would win a second consecutive stage but Merlier got ahead with 30m remaining as Milan finished second with Arnaud De Lie completing the podium. Road signs in honor of British cycling great Mark Cavendish had been placed at entry points to Chateauroux — reading Cavendish City — in homage to the now-retired 40-year-old, after he won three stages there in 2008, 2011 and 2021. Pogacar's Tour de France defense took a hit Sunday as his key teammate Joao Almeida threw in the towel two days after his nasty fall at the Mur de Bretagne, where he fractured a rib. 'It's a big loss he was in good shape. He's our hero. I was suffering today so I understand how he must have felt. Every respect to him,' the Slovenian said. Stage 10 should shake up the race with eight classified climbs in the Massif Central on the July 14 French national holiday. After finishing in the peloton on Sunday, Pogacar was already looking ahead to Monday's mountainous 165.3km slog. 'Visma have a strong team for tomorrow and I think Jonas (Vingegaard) will be ready,' Pogacar said of his great Danish rival. 'There will be attacks from the main contenders, it's up and down all day. 'I'm pretty confident in my team though. I'm looking forward to the hard stages,' added the 26-year-old three-time champion.
