Canals project: PM Shehbaz chairs 52nd meeting of Council of Common Interests
The meeting, summoned by PM Shehbaz, will address the ongoing debate over the suspension of the controversial canal project on the Indus River.
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon had earlier confirmed the agenda, highlighting the urgent need to resolve the inter-provincial dispute that has strained relations between Sindh and Punjab.
The meeting was earlier scheduled for May 2.
However, Memon announced today the meeting was called on the request of the Sindh government.
The chief ministers of all four provinces have been invited to participate in the meeting. Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and Science and Health Minister Mustafa Kamal will also attend the meeting.
On Thursday, PM Shehbaz said the government is pausing the key canal irrigation project, adding that no new canals will be built until a special committee formed to address concerns on the project reaches a consensus.
The premier made the announcement during a joint press conference with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, emphasizing that no unilateral decisions would be made on canal projects without provincial consensus.
The 1991 Water Apportionment Accord is a significant agreement that controls the distribution of water from the Indus River across all provinces of Pakistan.
The Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has the accountability of applying this water accordingly and addressing any disputes that arise in connection with it.
Meanwhile, sit-in protests and shutter-down strikes continued in different cities of Sindh against the six controversial canals issue.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed to formulate a comprehensive government-level strategy to make electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible to the common citizen, the Prime Minister's Office said in a press release. Presiding a meeting in Islamabad regarding encouraging usage of EVs in the country, PM Shehbaz emphasised that encouraging electric vehicles in Pakistan will result in billions of dollars saved in fuel import costs, environmental protection, and the growth of local industry. He announced that the federal government, including the federal educational board and all other educational boards across the country, will provide electric bikes to top-performing students. Pakistan launches National Electric Vehicle Policy 2025-30 The prime minister further stated that the government will prioritise employment generation by providing electric rickshaws and loaders vehicles to unemployed individuals. To support the local EV industry, the premier instructed the development of a complete ecosystem for the manufacturing and maintenance of EVs within Pakistan. He also called for third-party validation of the EV distribution process and government support mechanisms, ensuring transparency and efficiency. The prime minister emphasised that economically disadvantaged individuals should be given priority in accessing EVs under the government assistance scheme. He ordered the launch of a public awareness campaign about the EV subsidy scheme and ensured that the electric bikes, rickshaws, and loaders distributed through the initiative meet high-quality and safety standards. A review meeting, chaired by PM Shehbaz, on promoting EVs and government support for their acquisition was participated by federal ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant to PM Haroon Akhtar, Chief Coordinator Mosharraf Zaidi, and senior officials. PM Shehbaz expresses satisfaction over training of 300 agriculture graduates in China
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed heartfelt satisfaction over the successful completion of hands-on training by the first batch of around 300 Pakistani agriculture graduates in China in important areas of water saving irrigation, seed production, animal husbandry, agriculture production and prevention of post-harvest losses. In a post on his X handle, he expressed gratitude to the Chinese leadership, the Shaanxi government, and the two universities, while also appreciating the efforts of Ministry of National Food Security, HEC, and the Embassy in Beijing. Shehbaz said this batch is part of the training programme for 1000 Pakistani agriculture graduates, which he had announced during his visit to China in June last year. During his visit to China in June 2024, PM Shehbaz was accompanied by Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and other senior ministers of the cabinet. Besides Beijing, he visited the cities of Xi'an and Shenzhen as well. The prime minister met President Xi Jinping and held delegation-level talks with Premier Li Qiang. He also held meetings with Chairman Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji and heads of key government departments. An important aspect of the prime minister's visit was meetings with corporate executives of leading Chinese companies dealing in oil and gas, energy, ICT, and emerging technologies. In Shenzhen, he addressed the China- Pakistan Business Forum with leading businesspersons, entrepreneurs, and investors from both countries. He also visited Economic and Agricultural Zones in China.

PM Shehbaz orders expansion of national shipping fleet
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed authorities to increase the number of ships in the national maritime fleet to reduce freight-related forex outflows. PM Shehbaz made these remarks while chairing a review meeting on reforms in Pakistan's shipping sector and the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). The prime minister said a plan should be formulated to encourage private sector investment in Pakistan's shipping sector. 'Measures should be taken to restructure the PNSC along corporate lines,' he added. During the meeting, the prime minister remarked that the Pakistan-Afghanistan-Uzbekistan railway line is set to mark the beginning of a new era of trade in the region. PM orders comprehensive overhaul of PNSC 'Goods from Central Asia will be transported across the globe via Pakistani ports.' PM Shehbaz stated that the improvement of the railway and shipping sectors is of vital importance for transit trade. The transportation of cargo through Pakistani shipping lines presents a unique opportunity for the country to earn valuable foreign exchange, he said. He also instructed the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the PNSC to undertake comprehensive reforms and present a sustainable business model for the sector. The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, and other senior officials concerned.
