Ben Stokes' five-wicket haul against India at Old Trafford marks his fifth in Tests, making him the fourth men's all-rounder with five fifers and 10 centuries.
England captain Ben Stokes' brilliant five-wicket haul against India on Day 2 of the ongoing Test at Old Trafford was historic by every metric. It was his fifth in Test cricket, making him only the fourth men's all-rounder ever to pick five fifers and also have 10 centuries to his name in the format.
The names of the other three will put his achievement in further perspective: Gary Sobers (26 centuries and six fifers in 93 Tests), Ian Botham (14 centuries and 27 fifers in 102 Tests) and Jacques Kallis (45 centuries and five fifers in 166 Tests). It has taken Stokes 114 Tests to reach there and he has the fewest tons among them (13), but this record is as big a stamp of approval as he can have to be considered one of the sport's greatest.
He has had to wait for a long time for it, too. Stokes reached four fifers in 2017, and it took him eight years to make it five. It was mostly due to injuries and his now 16 wickets in this series (chart-topping and also personal best) epitomise how it is probably the best he has bowled in a decade.
In the match, his victims were Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill, Shardul Thakur, Washington Sundar and Anshul Kamboj.
On the other bowling end, Jofra Archer also took three wickets — Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah. The third was his 50th Test wicket in only 13 Tests.
England bowled India out for 358 in just over 114 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant scored half-centuries as the entire top eight went past double digits without converting it to a big one.
After the innings break, the pitch flattened out a bit with not as much variable bounce and help for pacers than when India were batting. Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett went to tea unscathed with 33 and 43 runs on the board, respectively.

Bad news for Jasprit Bumrah, head coach Gautam Gambhir forces BCCI to take BIG decision due to…

Gautam Gambhir and BCCI are not happy with players 'picking and choosing' matches. (Photo: IANS) Team India managed to heroically level the five-match Test series against England at the Oval in London on Monday. Shubman Gill's side posted their narrowest win in Test cricket in their history by six runs as the 'Tendulkar Anderson Trophy' was shared after a 2-2 draw. However, one of the major concerns for the Indian side was the 'unavailability' of their premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah for all five of the Test matches. Bumrah missed the 2nd and 5th Test of the series after deciding to play in only three out of the five games in the series. The Mumbai Indians pacer ended up as Team India's second-highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in 3 Tests behind Mohammed Siraj, who claimed 23 wickets after playing in all five Tests. But according to reports, head coach Gautam Gambhir is keen on putting an end to this practice of 'picking and choosing' matches. What is the BCCI decision after discussion with Gautam Gambhir? According to a report in PTI news agency, BCCI have decided that all centrally-contracted Indian players will not to allowed to 'pick and chose' their matches going forward. 'There have been discussions and the message will be sent across to the centrally contracted players, especially those who are all format regulars that this culture of picking and choosing games won't be entertained in near future,' a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by PTI news agency. 'It doesn't mean that workload management will be thrown out of the window but a more objective approach is expected in near future. Obviously, fast bowlers' workload needs to be managed but it can't be accepted that in the name of workload management, people will miss crucial matches,' the official added. Siraj, who sent down 185.3 overs across five Tests or over 1000 deliveries throughout the Test series. In spite of that, Siraj's final ball of the game – which clean-bowled Gus Atkinson to win the Oval Test – was clocked at 143kph, his fifth fastest ball of the entire series. In contrary to this, Bumrah's pace kept on decreasing in all the three Tests he played. In fact, in the fourth Test at Manchester, Bumrah only bowled 3 per cent of his deliveries which were above 140kph. Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar also slammed the over-usage of 'workload management' excuse. 'When you are playing for your country, forget the aches and the pains. On the border, do you think that the jawans are complaining about cold? What did Rishabh Pant show you? He came out to bat with a fracture. That is what you expect from the players. Playing cricket for India is an honour,' Gavaskar told 'India Today'. 'You are representing 140 crore people and that is what we saw in Mohammed Siraj. I think Siraj bowled his heart out, and he debunked forever this business of workload. For five Test matches, non-stop he has bowled 7-8 over spells, because the captain wanted him and the country expected of him,' he added. Will Jasprit Bumrah be available for Asia Cup 2025? The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to start on September 9 in UAE and Bumrah would have got a break of more than month before the T20 games for Team India begin. But the BCCI official said that if Bumrah did play in the Asia Cup and Team India ended up reaching the final on September 28, it is unlikely that the speedster will be available to play in the first Test vs West Indies from October 2. 'Look if Bumrah plays in the Asia Cup and if India go the distance till September 28, he won't obviously play the West Indies Test series starting October 2. However, if there are no injuries, he will certainly play the two Tests against World champions South Africa in November,' the BCCI official told PTI.

Not Mohammed Siraj! This 25-Year-Old Awarded India's Impact Player In England Series

Last Updated: Washington Sundar has been named Impact Player of the Series for his outstanding performance in the Test series against England. Star India allrounder Washington Sundar was on Monday awarded the Impact Player of the Series, after he put up a brilliant show with both bat and ball, which was crucial in India drawing the five-match Test series against England and finishing the tour on a massive high. Yashasvi Jaiswal enhanced his reputation as an all-conditions opener with a gutsy century on a tough track before Sundar's whirlwind half-century permitted India to set a record 374-run target for England on an absorbing third day of the final Test in London on Saturday, August 2. India were all out for 396 in the second innings courtesy the fireworks from Sundar, who displayed exemplary six-hitting skills against Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue. He was awarded the medal by Ravindra Jadeja. 'It is a great blessing to be playing four games on the trot in a place like England. Always wanted to do well here and as a team, just the way we went about every single day, it was amazing," Sundar said while speaking in the dressing room. 'The energy that we created, from a fielding perspective, we were always there for each other. Thank you so much for everything," Sundar added. Having scored his maiden Test century last week, the star India allrounder looked confident as he put the opposition pacers to the sword to swell India's lead. Sundar picked four wickets in the Lord's Test, although that wasn't enough to stop England from bagging the game. He scored an unbeaten 101* in Manchester and followed it up with a half-century at the Oval. Sundar played the role of the second spinner between Jadeja and the duo put up a commendable show in unfavourable conditions as India chose to bench Kuldeep Yadav throughout the tour. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
