Selangor partners with MOE to build TVET graduate database
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari announced the initiative, which will be managed by the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC).
The database aims to streamline access for employers and industry players seeking skilled workers in the state.
'Selangor already has the Smart Selangor Technical and Professional Skills Initiative (IKTISASS), launched in 2019 to strengthen graduate expertise in sectors like aerospace,' he said during the state assembly session.
'Meanwhile, the federal government provides aviation engineering courses via polytechnics,' he added.
Amirudin was responding to a query from Dr Mohd Zamri Mohd Zainuldin (PN-Sungai Burong) about the availability of a skills-based database for TVET graduates.
The proposal for the database will be included in the upcoming state budget as part of Selangor's initiatives for next year.
The state is also intensifying efforts to promote TVET as a primary choice for school leavers, despite lingering challenges in public perception.
'Many still believe that only a university education guarantees employment, causing TVET to be seen as a secondary option,' he said.
'This mindset needs to shift,' he added.
'Next year, we will collaborate with the State Education Department to introduce TVET career opportunities at the secondary school level,' he said. – Bernama

Malaysia eyes TVET expansion in Russia
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is keen to increase enrolment for Malaysian students, particularly for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes, in Russia. This was conveyed by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan during his bilateral meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, held on the sidelines of the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting. Mohamad said that Malaysia and Russia also explored ways to enhance cooperation and ties in technical fields, as well as other areas of mutual interest. 'I expressed Malaysia's interest in securing more placements for our students, and Russia has agreed,' he told reporters after the meeting, Bernama reported. The two ministers also touched on broader regional cooperation, including Russia's potential signing of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ). 'Russia is considering signing the SEANWFZ treaty with Asean and the documentation will be negotiated at the official level,' said Mohamad. Russia established relations with Asean in 1991. The country became a full-fledged dialogue partner in 1996. In 2018, the relationship was elevated to a strategic partnership. In his remarks at the Asean Plus Three meeting, Mohamad said rising unilateralism and nationalism are increasingly sidelining multilateral cooperation – a core pillar of global stability now under strain. 'Today, we are once again being tested. The region is facing what might be called the perfect storm. 'The challenges are multi-fold, ranging from intensifying great power rivalry, economic fragmentation, technological disruptions and transboundary threats.' Despite the difficulties, Mohamad expressed confidence in the region's ability to overcome them through 'collective steadfastness and strong commitment to dialogue and cooperation'. Established in 1997 to address the Asian financial crisis, the Asean Plus Three framework has since evolved into one of the region's most resilient models of cooperation. Meanwhile, Asean foreign ministers hailed the Asean-Canada Free Trade Agreement (Acafta) as a vital platform to unlock deeper economic collaboration in digital trade, artificial intelligence, green technology and clean energy. Wisma Putra said the sectors are seen as critical to the region's sustainable and inclusive growth. It said that ministers from across South-East Asia acknowledged the 'positive momentum' in ongoing Acafta negotiations. PM announces RM1mil for KLFA, calls for more ethical sports culture
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced an allocation of RM1mil to the Kuala Lumpur Football Association (KLFA) in support of efforts to revitalise football in the capital city. The Prime Minister said the government consistently encouraged the development of football, which he described as a people's sport that was widely loved and participated in. However, he stressed that emphasis should be placed on infrastructure as a fundamental aspect in advancing the sport. "This is an opportunity for us to elevate the status of national football, but it has to start from the basics. That is why what was raised just now about collaboration with the Education Ministry, the Higher Education Ministry, or other training institutes is important. "It's not just about funding, but adequate infrastructure is crucial - proper fields, training facilities, training academies - to ensure our children are trained well and in comfort," he said in his speech at the KLFA's 50th Golden Jubilee celebration here Saturday (July 12). Also present were Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is also KLFA patron, and KLFA president Syed Yazid Syed Omar. Meanwhile, Anwar also urged that sportsmanship be preserved, including proper conduct among supporters, who at times behaved beyond acceptable limits and tarnished the spirit of unity. Education Ministry leaves probe into liquor auction at school to authorities
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Education Ministry is leaving it to the authorities to investigate the recent incident involving a liquor auction within a school compound that went viral recently. Its Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry will not compromise on any form of misconduct or violation of regulations involving educational institutions. "We have handed the matter over to the relevant authorities for investigation. "We will not tolerate any misconduct or breaches of the rules. "Action will be taken," she told reporters after officiating the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 in Terengganu today. She said investigations are ongoing, including into reports of a scuffle during the auction, and the ministry will continue to monitor the case to ensure regulations are upheld and appropriate action is taken. The incident sparked public outrage after a primary school facility in Pontian, Johor, was used to host a liquor auction, during which a fight was also reported to have occurred.
