HC bench allows NTA appeal, sets aside order for NEET UG '25 re-test
Indore: The Indore division bench of Madhya Pradesh high court on Monday allowed the appeal of the National Testing Agency (NTA) and set aside the writ court order that directed a re-test of NEET UG 2025 for students who faced power cuts during the exams on May 4, 2025. The court allowed writ petitions filed by the NTA against the June 23 order that directed the agency to conduct the retest of students approaching the court before June 3, with grievances that power cuts adversely affected their ability and concentration during the tests on May 4. The bench, comprising Justice Vivek Rusia and Justice Binod Kumar Dwivedi, while clubbing a bunch of appeals from the NTA and the students, said in the order, "..we do not find that it is a fit case for a re-test of NEET (UG) 2025. Hence, all the Writ Appeals filed by the NTA stand allowed. The impugned order passed by the Writ Court dated June 23, 2025, is hereby set aside, and all the writ petitions are dismissed." Referring to a statistical analysis of the performance of students prepared by an expert committee and submitted by the NTA, the court observed that it is clear from the aforesaid that the result and performance of the writ petitioners were not seriously affected due to bad weather and power outage for some time. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Premium 3 & 4 BHK ( 1079 - 1829 ) from ₹72.03 Lacs* at Jessore Road Srijan Realty Learn More Undo To avoid such a situation in the future, the court also directed the NTA and local administration of each district to ensure that all the measures, especially the continuity of power supply by way of regular supply or by way of an alternate mode of supply, proper sitting arrangement, and availability of air and cooling, are in place. It is the responsibility of the local administration to prepare the list of centres that can be used for these types of important examinations by any of the agencies, it said. The court observed that it is correct that students prepared a whole year before appearing in this examination, which is a turning point in their career. "They must have taken coaching from higher and expensive coaching centres along with their regular studies of Higher Secondary School Examinations. Therefore, if they faced this type of situation, they and their family members may feel in their entire life that because of this incident, they could not reach a place they dreamed of in life," it observed. "It is also a fact to accept that more than 22 lakh students appeared for limited seats of 1 lakh, therefore, the percentage of selection is very low. These students feel that they could not perform well because of the power outage in their examination centres, but the other 21 lakh students who appeared in good condition remained unsuccessful," the court said. "There is no guarantee that even if the re-test is done in all conducive circumstances or atmosphere, they will secure higher marks than this examination," the court observed. It is correct that for every child, this exam is very important for his future career, but it is also important to note that out of 27,264 candidates, only 70 candidates filed writ petitions complaining about disruption due to power outage, which is a very insignificant figure, the court observed. Earlier, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted that the learned Single Judge's direction for a re-test was impractical as the NEET (UG) exam is conducted in a single shift with one question paper to preserve comparability and fairness. He contested that the direction to conduct a re-test would significantly delay the commencement of this academic session.

Journalist and YouTuber Ajit Anjum Booked Over His Video on Bihar SIR; Digipub Condemns
The Begusarai district administration, in a statement, dismissed the claims of irregularities in Anjum's reportage, calling it 'baseless' and 'misleading'. The FIR was registered on July 13 at the Ballia police station in connection to a video on his YouTube channel on July 12, in which Anjum had alleged large-scale irregularities in the voter list in the Sahebpur Kamal assembly constituency. The video showed how the SIR process was being undertaken in Balia and claimed that many voter forms were being filled and uploaded without the Election Commission's required documents or photographs. The district administration, in a statement released on platform X, dismissed these claims and called it 'baseless' and 'misleading'. It also alleged that the video was intended to 'incite public sentiment'. According to a report by Newslaundry, the FIR was filed based on a complaint by booth-level officer Mohammad Ansarulhaq, who alleged that Ajit Anjum and his colleagues met him while he was uploading data using the BLO app and began asking questions about Muslim voters in the area. Earlier in the day, Ajit Anjum had posted on X that he did not receive a copy of the FIR said to have been filed against him. 'I'm getting information about an FIR being filed against me in Begusarai, Bihar. I have not received a copy of the FIR. I am waiting,' he said. He also wrote about the video in question and alleged that he had been coerced to delete the video to which he refused. 'Two days ago, I reported irregularities in the forms being filled for 'SIR' in Ballia block. I was called by the local BDO and SDO, asking me to delete the video. I did not listen to them. The result is evident,' he said. 'There are a hundred questions about the Election Commission's methods in Bihar. Instead of answering those questions, efforts have now begun to intimidate journalists. In this video, I have presented my side. I will not be scared. I will show only the truth. I will report on the shortcomings,' he added. 'I am waiting for official information about the FIR. I came to Begusarai from Kishanganj last night so that the administration does not face much trouble in searching for me,' he further added. — Ajit Anjum (@ajitanjum) July 14, 2025 Digipub condemns FIR Meanwhile, Digipub, a coalition of digital media organisations and independent journalists, has strongly condemned the FIR filed against the journalist calling it a 'direct assault' on independent journalism. In a statement, the journalists' body said, 'DIGIPUB News India Foundation strongly condemns the FIR filed against independent senior journalist and YouTuber Ajit Anjum in Begusarai, Bihar and demands that the FIR be immediately withdrawn.' 'This FIR is not just an attack on an individual journalist-it is a direct assault on independent journalism and the public's right to know the truth. While reporting from the ground on the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) process in Begusarai, Ajit Anjum highlighted exactly what the people on the ground shared with him. According to him, he was trying to bring out the facts related to SIR. However, this honest effort appears to have displeased the govement and administration,' the statement read. It also pointed to the press release that the Begurasai district administration had issued prior to the FIR, calling Anjum's reportage 'misleading'. 'These vague allegations are neither credible nor reason enough for an FIR. Either authorities should learn to provide accurate and factual information to journalists' queries or step aside when journalists find information on their own with no cooperation from a democratic machinery that should be providing transparency but seldom does. 'Ajit Anjum had also raised concerns about violations of the Election Commission's guidelines in Bihar-something that falls well within the responsibilities of a journalist, not a criminal offense. Instead of addressing those legitimate questions, the Election Commission, through this FIR, has attempted to intimidate not just him but all independent journalists who dare to report from the ground,' Digipub stated. The body said that the action appears to be a 'systematic and deliberate attempt to silence the press and suppress inconvenient truths' and asserted that it was an attack on press freedom and a threat to democratic values and the constitutional right to free expression. 'This FIR, in our view, is nothing but a cover-up for institutional failures, and we strongly oppose it. We stand in solidarity with Ajit Anjum and with every journalist who has the courage to speak the truth,' it asserted. DMK's student wing holds protest in Coimbatore against Palaniswami's remarks on temple funds
The DMK's student wing held a protest in Coimbatore on Monday condemning AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami's remarks on the use of temple funds for educational institutions. The demonstration, held at Tatabad in Coimbatore city, also criticised the BJP-led Union government's education policies. Led by student wing secretary R. Rajiv Gandhi, the protest saw participation from party MPs K. Prakash and Ganapathi P. Rajkumar, district secretaries, and office-bearers of the students' wing. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi said Mr. Palaniswami had remained silent during his tenure as Chief Minister on issues such as NEET and the National Education Policy, and was now criticising the use of temple funds without understanding their purpose. He alleged that the BJP was scripting Mr. Palaniswami's statements and accused him of aligning with RSS-backed narratives. The protesters also criticised the withdrawal of scholarships that were earlier available to minority students under schemes named after A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and Maulana Azad. They said the DMK government had stepped in to support the affected students. Slogans were raised condemning Mr. Palaniswami and the Union government, with participants rejecting what they described as politically motivated narratives against the Dravidian model of governance.
