Character AI names former Meta executive Karandeep Anand as CEO
His appointment comes just under a year after co-founder and CEO Noam Shazeer left the company to join Google, which is one of Character AI's investors. The move raised regulatory flags, prompting scrutiny from US federal agencies over the companies' ties to Google and the nature of their agreement.
Character AI has seen explosive growth, attracting tens of millions of monthly active users, with 66 per cent of them aged 18-24, and 72 per cent identifying as women, according to data from digital analytics firm Sensor Tower. But the platform has also drawn criticism over moderation tools and is currently facing a lawsuit after one of its AI roleplay chatbots was allegedly involved in the death of a 14-year old American boy.
In response, the company has introduced new safety filters but those, too, have drawn backlash for over-moderation. In a public letter addressed to Character AI's global user base, Anand reaffirmed the company's dedication to user safety. 'We're going to move fast to give you a bunch of the things you've been asking for […] We're going to make the filter less overbearing. (We care deeply about user safety and always will. But too often, the app filters things that are perfectly harmless. We're going to fix that.),' he said.
Anand also committed to rolling out major product improvements 'in the next 60 days', including enhanced memory, better model quality, clearer moderation policies, and improved discoverability for community-created characters. Character AI is also building toward immersive, multimedia experiences, enabling characters to 'jump off the page' through audio-video interaction.
'I'm committing to launch all of that this summer and the team is hard at work to make all this real soon. I've spent many years building products, and I'm going to make sure we move fast and give you features that delight you and make [Character AI] more immersive and more fun,' Anand added.
While entertainment-based chatbots were once a casual use case of generative AI, Character AI's surge in popularity – and the emotional connections users feel toward its AI chatbot characters –could turn it into a rapidly emerging cultural trend. Anand acknowledged this, stating that the company's long-term vision is to 'shape the future of entertainment'.

India well-placed to benefit from tariff-led trade shifts, says Moody's
New Delhi: India is well-positioned to benefit from a global realignment in trade and investment flows driven by shifting tariff regimes, and could outpace several Asia-Pacific (APAC) peers, Moody's Ratings said on Thursday. As multinationals reassess supply chains amid rising protectionism and evolving trade policies, India's relative tariff advantage may strengthen its appeal as an emerging global manufacturing hub, Moody's noted in its latest Sovereigns – Asia-Pacific Outlook. 'India may be subject to lower tariffs than many in APAC, which could help the economy attract further investment flows and support its development as a global manufacturing base. The signing of a free trade agreement with the UK in May and ongoing efforts to establish the same with the EU will further support such development,' the report said. Moody's pointed out that compared to countries like Cambodia and Vietnam, India is better placed to gain meaningfully from trade diversion and shifting capital flows—thanks to its scale, policy orientation, and improved market access through bilateral agreements. The recently concluded free trade agreement with the UK was highlighted as a key enabler of India's broader trade ambitions. Parallel efforts to negotiate a pact with the European Union are also expected to boost market access and strengthen investor confidence. However, Moody's cautioned that broader trends in global industrial policy could still temper the scale of these gains. 'The US' goal to reshore select manufacturing segments could challenge the extent to which India benefits,' the report said. The commentary comes at a time when India is accelerating its push to emerge as an alternative manufacturing base to China, supported by targeted policy incentives, supply chain development, and efforts to deepen trade integration with developed economies. To be sure, US President Donald Trump's 'reciprocal tariffs' policy—announced in April—aims to impose higher duties on countries that levy steeper tariffs on American goods, triggering a wave of global trade renegotiations. Under the plan, a broad 10% baseline tariff was introduced in April, with steeper rates imposed on countries such as China and Vietnam. A temporary 90-day pause was granted to allow for negotiations. Since then, the U.S. has revised trade deals with the UK, China, and most recently Vietnam, trimming their tariff exposure as it races to finalize more agreements before the July 9 deadline. Meanwhile, Washington and New Delhi are negotiating a trade agreement aimed at avoiding the steep duties lined up under Trump's plan.

Explained: How Farm Goods Are Holding Up US-India Trade Deal
US and India trade negotiators were pushing on Wednesday to finalise a tariff-reducing deal ahead of President Donald Trump's July 9 negotiating deadline, but disagreements over US dairy and agriculture remained unresolved. Why are farm goods imports sensitive in India? Agriculture and its allied areas contribute just 16% to India's $3.9 trillion economy, but sustain nearly half of the country's 1.4 billion population. As farmers remain the most powerful voting bloc, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government was forced into a rare retreat four years ago when it tried to push through controversial farm laws. The prospect of cheaper imports from the United States threatens to drive down local prices, handing the opposition a fresh opportunity to attack the government. New Delhi has traditionally kept agriculture out of Free Trade Agreements with other nations. Granting market access to the US could force India to extend similar concessions to other trading partners. How do Indian and US farms compare? The average Indian farm comprises just 1.08 hectares, compared to 187 hectares in the United States. In dairy, the average herd size in India is two to three animals per farmer, compared to hundreds in the United States. This difference makes it difficult for small Indian farmers to compete with their US counterparts. Farming in India remains largely unmechanised because small, fragmented land holdings leave little room for large machinery. In many regions, farmers rely on techniques passed down through generations, a sharp contrast to US farms, where cutting-edge equipment and AI-driven technologies have raised productivity. Which products is US lobbying for? Why is India resisting? The United States is pressing India to open its markets to a wide range of American products, including dairy, poultry, corn, soybeans, rice, wheat, ethanol, citrus fruits, almonds, pecans, apples, grapes, canned peaches, chocolates, cookies, and frozen French fries. While India is willing to grant greater access to US dry fruits and apples, it is holding back on allowing imports of corn, soybeans, wheat, and dairy products. India does not allow genetically modified (GM) food crops, while most US corn and soybean production is GM-based. Dairy remains a sensitive issue in India, where cultural and dietary preferences strongly influence food choices. Indian consumers are particularly concerned that cattle in the US are often fed with animal by-products, a practice that conflicts with Indian food habits. Why does India oppose US ethanol for bleeding with gasoline? A key aim of India's Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) program is to cut dependence on energy imports by blending domestically-produced ethanol with gasoline. Significant investments by domestic companies mean that India is now close to achieving its ambitious target of blending 20% ethanol. Importing ethanol would undermine those companies. The EBP also helps manage surpluses of rice, sugarcane, and corn by diverting them to ethanol production. Allowing imports of US ethanol would be a serious setback for India's emerging distillery sector.

Google's Veo 3 arrives in the Middle East, bringing hyper-real AI video generation to Gemini users
Google's Veo 3 enables Middle East creators to generate hyper-realistic AI videos from text prompts on the Gemini platform./ Image: GoogleArabia/X Google has officially rolled out Veo 3, its latest AI-powered video creation tool, to Gemini users across the Middle East, marking a major expansion in the region for its generative media technology. Now available to paying users of Gemini, Veo 3 allows people to generate cinematic video clips from simple text prompts, complete with synchronized sound, music, dialogue, and realistic visuals. Veo 3: From Prompt to Production Initially unveiled at Google I/O 2024, the company's annual developer conference in May, Veo 3 has quickly drawn attention for its high realism, advanced physics simulation, and precise lip-syncing capabilities. 'From prompt to production, Veo 3 delivers best-in-class realism, physics, and lip syncing,' said Eli Collins, Vice President of Product at Google DeepMind, during the launch event at Google I/O. Users can input a short description of a scene, such as "a foggy street in old Tokyo with neon lights and light rain," and Veo 3 responds by generating an eight-second, 720p video that integrates ambient sound, spoken dialogue, realistic effects, and visual elements that closely mirror the input description. According to Collins, Veo 3 not only performs standard text-to-video generation, but also supports image prompting and introduces a new benchmark in responsive AI video design. He wrote in a blog post: 'Veo 3 excels from text and image prompting to real-world physics and accurate lip syncing,' highlighting its strengths in realism, responsiveness, and user control. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 21st Century Skills Start with Confident Communication Planet Spark Learn More Undo Competing with Sora and Raising the Bar With its ability to generate native audio, including background noise, soundtracks, and voiceovers, Veo 3 positions itself as a direct rival to OpenAI's Sora, which is also in the race to dominate the generative video space. What sets Veo 3 apart is the combination of multi-modal generation (text, image, sound) and its physics-aware rendering, making it capable of crafting scenes that feel lifelike and cinematic, whether it's for a dreamlike short film, a product concept, or even a viral meme. One example that gained popularity on social media involved a surreal AI-generated clip of Will Smith eating spaghetti, which drew attention across platforms like X (formerly Twitter). Transparency Through Watermarking To ensure content authenticity, all Veo 3 videos come with an embedded SynthID watermark, Google's invisible digital signature designed to label AI-generated content. This helps in tracing and verifying the origin of synthetic media, particularly in an era of increasing deepfake risks. In addition to the hidden watermark, Veo-generated videos, except those created by Ultra-tier members using Google's new Flow filmmaking platform, will also carry a visible watermark to clearly indicate that the video was AI-generated. Google is also testing a SynthID Detector tool to help individuals and platforms identify synthetic media with greater ease. Expanding Global Access Having made its debut in other markets earlier this year, Veo 3's launch in the Middle East opens the door for regional creators, filmmakers, marketers, and digital storytellers to explore high-end AI video creation without the need for traditional equipment or editing tools. The rollout is part of Google's broader strategy to integrate generative AI into everyday creative workflows, especially through its Gemini platform, which continues to gain traction among professionals and hobbyists alike.
