L.A. Launch's Hagen Smith inspired by his father during AVP League play at Intuit Dome

The former 'King of the Beach' kept his crown tucked away Saturday night.
Clad in denim jeans and a plain white shirt, Sinjin Smith hovered on the sidelines of the sand.
When Hagen Smith — the son and spitting image of Sinjin — sailed a serve too far, Sinjin craned his neck back and clenched his jaws.
'On the court, he tells me to serve short, and I never listen,' Hagen said.
And when Hagen — a UCLA alum like his father — uncorked a spike that thudded into the sand untouched, Sinjin's arm sliced the air as a grin stretched across his face and his applause echoed.
'I wasn't disguising anything,' Sinjin said.
Anonymity didn't stand a chance as Sinjin watched Hagen and Logan Webber locked in a razor-edged three-setter against the Palm Beach Passion that twice spilled past regulation.
But as Sinjin rode every rally, Hagen and Webber eked out a narrow victory, going 13-15, 18-16 and 18-16. The L.A. men's duo remains undefeated through five weeks of AVP play, helping offset the L.A. Launch female duo's first loss of the year earlier Saturday. Their combined records will determine whether they win the AVP League regular season crown.
Two dozen years removed from his final outing on the sand, Sinjin carved his career on the chaos of close calls. But Friday, with his son trading kills in a battle that felt like it refused to end, Sinjin was dodging heart attacks.
As the crowd learned in, Sinjin leaned back.
'It's nerve wracking to watch him — you couldn't get a better match for the fans, but I hated it,' Sinjin said. 'I want to win in two and go home.'
While Sinjin might've winced through every extra-point rally, Hagen soaked it all in — steady under pressure.. He may be 'trying his best to live up to' his father, but to hear Sinjin tell it, Hagen had already surpassed the myth.
'He's an unbelievable resource to me. I'll ask him at like, midnight, 'Hey, can you come out in the morning and coach me?' He's there,' Hagen said of Sinjin. 'I've modeled my game after him, through and through. If I can be as anything like him as a player, I'm honored.'
Sinjin marveled at Hagen with the awe of a fan.
'He's his own person. He's playing for himself, trust me,' Sinjin said. 'He may be wanting to prove something to me, I don't know, but he's done so much more than I ever expected. He's so fun to watch — the fact that he's my son, that's just icing on the cake.'
Sinjin, the UCLA and International Volleyball Hall of Famer, tapped his temple twice when asked where he and his son aligned on the sand. The resemblance, he said, lives in the mind — because Hagen's style has taken on its own shape, forged far from his father's shadow.
'He jumps and he's powerful and he moves in the sand,' Sinjin said. 'I did everything pretty well, which was my strength, but he really excels in — for one, attacking the ball, he hits the ball harder and more explosively when he attacks than I ever was.'
For as long as Hagen could remember, Pauley Pavilion was the lighthouse in the distance — the promised land of his childhood dreams. And when he finally walked into the arena, his eyes fixed to a familiar face.
There was Sinjin, featured on the walls around the Bruins' home.
'Getting to see that, it's like, 'Ah, this is home to me. I've got dad helping me out, I've got dad watching over me. Luckily I got to wear his number that was retired and that felt awesome,' said Hagen, who wore his father's No. 22 jersey in college.
Sinjin played under Al Scates — the architect of UCLA's volleyball dynasty and the winningest coach in NCAA men's volleyball history. Under Scates and his 19 national titles, winning was the annual expectation.
And under Scates' tutelage, Sinjin bookended his career with national glory, and flooded his cabinets with individual accolades — two All-American recognitions, a Most Outstanding Player distinction at the 1979 national championship and a stalwart of the historic undefeated 1979 squad.
'[Scates] was the best coach of all time in the United States,' Sinjin said. 'Al had a knack for picking players that had more than just a physical game. They had a mental game as well. … There's so many of them that Al trained and went on to be the best of the very best in either beach or indoors.'
Decades later, Hagen was coached by Scates' protege John Speraw.
After rattling off the names of former teammates and sand-side partners, Sinjin paused, seemingly struck by a pattern he couldn't ignore: 'God,' he said, 'there's a lot of UCLA legends going around.'
Two of those share the same last name.
'[Sinjin] tried to get me into tennis,' Hagen said, 'and I was like, 'Dad, I just want to play volleyball. I just want to be like you.''
In other AVP action Saturday, Palm Beach Passion's Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson handed L.A. Launch's Terese Cannon and Megan Kraft their first loss, winning 12-15, 15-6, 15-10.
San Diego Smash's Devon Newberry and Geena Urango defeated Miami Mayhem's Kelly Cheng and Molly Shaw 15-10, 15-11.
And San Diego Smash's Chase Budinger and Miles Evans beat Miami Mayhem's Chaim Schalk and James Shaw 11-15, 15-11, 15-13.

Shaquille O'Neal expects Lakers to finish in top four in West

Right now, just about everyone agrees that the Los Angeles Lakers are a playoff team, but not a championship contender. Some more cynical pundits and observers have the Lakers falling into the play-in tournament. The team lost 3-and-D forward Dorian Finney-Smith in free agency, but it at least somewhat recovered by signing promising forward Jake LaRavia and center Deandre Ayton. In particular, Ayton has the ability to elevate the Lakers' ceiling, given how weak they were at the 5 spot this past season. Los Angeles lacks perimeter defenders, but legendary center Shaquille O'Neal said that he's more concerned about another thing the team needs more of. 'They have a legitimate big now, got two premier players,' O'Neal said. 'I'm still worried about the shooting. It's a three-point league now. Not guys that can shoot, (I'm talking about) bonafide shooters. Guys that are guaranteed, like JJ Redick. He was a bonafide shooter. They got the point guard, got the off-guard, got a legitimate center. Their chances are much better now.' However, O'Neal then added that he expects L.A. to get a top-four seed in the Western Conference this coming season. 'You got two premier players,' says O'Neal. 'You got a big guy that can do certain things. Those three players should be able to get you to one through four. If they don't have home court advantage, I'll be very disappointed.' In Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves, the Lakers have what many feel is a legitimate "big three." With Ayton and underrated forward Rui Hachimura rounding out their starting five, they could become an offensive juggernaut. Yes, the West has gotten a little better, mostly because Kevin Durant has moved to the Houston Rockets, who were the No. 2 seed this past season. But it's easy to forget that L.A. was the No. 3 seed, despite a very rough stretch early in the season and another rough stretch in March. It also had to develop chemistry on the fly once Doncic arrived in early February, something that is never easy to do late in the season.

Maya Brady reaches base in first 10 AUSL plate appearances before finally striking out

Maya Brady finally made an out in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League. The former UCLA star reached base in her first 10 plate appearances for the Talons, batting 7-for-7 and drawing three walks. Her perfect start came to an end in her final at-bat, striking out on a checked swing in a 3-1 loss to the Blaze on Friday night. Brady, the niece of Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady, made her AUSL debut on Wednesday after missing the first 18 games of the season with a strained hamstring. She hit 2-for-2 with a walk in a 4-1 win over the Blaze, beginning a four-game set at Dumke Family Softball Stadium in Salt Lake City. 'I feel like I've been so anxious on the sideline,' Brady told ESPN, via 'I've been wanting to get in the game so bad.' On Thursday, Brady batted 3-for-3 with another walk and her first home run, leading the Talons to a 5-4 victory. Playing left field for the Talons on Friday, Brady reached base in her first three plate appearances, getting two hits and a walk. Her fifth-inning single gave the Talons a 2-1 lead. She had an opportunity to start her AUSL career 11-for-11 in plate appearances. But she struck out in the seventh inning against Blaze pitcher Alana Vawter. The Talons face the Blaze one more time on Saturday before finishing the regular season with two games versus the Volts in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. In five seasons at UCLA, Brady was a two-time Pac-12 player of the year and a three-time first-team All-American. Playing center field and shortstop, she batted .384/.464/.757 with 48 doubles, 71 home runs, 241 RBI and 36 stolen bases. The AUSL began its inaugural season with four teams — the Talons, Blaze, Volts and Bandits — playing 24 games in 10 cities throughout the United States, including Chicago and Seattle, in addition to Austin, Omaha, Chattanooga, and Norman, Oklahoma. Former MLB executive Kim Ng is the commissioner for the league. MLB is an investor in the league, with ESPN a broadcast partner.

Notable golfers who missed the cut at the 2025 British Open

The dreams of hoisting the Claret Jug are over for more then half the field at the 153rd British Open and some big names failed to make the weekend. When it was held in August, the PGA Championship was known as "Glory's Last Shot," but that event is now help in May, so the British Open is the last of the men's four major championships that is contested every year. After making a triumphant return to Royal Portrush in 2019, the tournament returns to the links in Northern Ireland for its 153rd edition, but for some notable players, their experience has ended after 36 holes. Only the low 70 golfers and those tied for 70th or better make the cut and play on the weekend, and this year exactly 70 players shot 1-over par or better. Who missed the cut at the British Open? Below are several well-known golfers and major champions who failed to make the cut at Royal Portrush this year. Playing in his 13th British Open, Day has now missed the cut at both events held at Royal Portrush. This is his second missed cut in a major this year (he missed the cut at the PGA Championship also). Two years ago, Day tied for second at Royal Liverpool, but this year, uncharacteristically, he was among the worst putters in the field, ranking 150th in Strokes Gained: Putting. Cantlay, who is still trying to win his first major championship, never did anything terrible at Royal Portrush, but his putter was ice cold. The former UCLA standout was a whiz with his wedges at this British Open, but only made three putts for the week that were 10 feet or farther from the hole, so he was unable to overcome his seven bogeys. Cantlay has now missed the cut in three consecutive majors. Missing the cut at the British Open after shooting 74-72 puts an end to a disappointing major season for Young, who you might recall finished second in the 2022 British Open at St. Andrews. The 28-year-old finished T-61 at the Players Championship, missed the cut at the Masters, and was T-47 at the PGA Championship. A tie for fourth at Oakmont teased us, but a cold putter sank his chances at Royal Portrush. The five-time major winner shot 75-74 and never appeared comfortable at this year's British Open. He finished in the top 100 in only one Strokes Gained category this week, Approach the Green, where he ranked 99th. Koepka is unlikely to be on the U.S. Ryder Cup team after also missing the cut this year at the Masters and the PGA Championship. Morikawa shot 75-74 to miss the cut at the 2025 British Open, and, for the first time in his six-year professional career, he has now failed to earn a top-10 in at least one of the season's four major championships. He came into this week ranked seventh on the United States Ryder Cup point list, so he should have a chance to end his frustrating season on a high note at Bethpage Black. The winner of the 2022 British Open at St. Andrews, Smith has now missed the cut in his last two British Opens. In 2019, the Australian finished T-20 at Royal Portrush, but a Friday 78 that included seven bogeys and just one birdie was his undoing. The 2018 Masters champion made a strong push down the stretch on Friday, carding birdies at 12, 14 and 15, but his 1-under-par 70 was not enough to overcome an opening-round 77, otherwise known as hockey sticks. Reed finished third at the 2025 Masters, missed the cut at the PGA Championship, and tied for 23rd at the U.S. Open, so this missed cut likely ensured he won't be re-living his Captain America persona on the Ryder Cup team in September. Playing in his 25th British Open, and coming off a strong performance at the U.S. Open at Oakmont, the Australian had reason to be confident heading to Royal Portrush, but Scott wound up missing the cut for the sixth time in his career. While he has been one of the best drivers and iron players in the game throughout most of his career, Scott ranked 135th in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and 142nd in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green. Ouch.
