Shortly after landing in Tamil Nadu for work, 6 men from Jharkhand abducted, families get video calls with gun to their head
The youth, aged between 20 and 21, had just deboarded a train and were en route to a job site when they were allegedly kidnapped by a local gang in what appeared to be a premeditated extortion attempt, officials said. Jamtara MLA and state Health Minister Irfan Amsari took cognisance of the case.
According to his office, the abductors identified the young men as migrants based on their body language and dialect, after which the gang reportedly misled and forcibly took the group away in a bus.
'Later, the abductors made video calls to the victims' families, threatening to kill the youth if a ransom wasn't paid. Holding pistols to their heads and knives to their necks, the gang demanded an initial payment of Rs 2.5 lakh. They forced the families to transfer Rs 30,000 first, followed by Rs 50,000 with the help of villagers pooling funds together,' said Azharuddin, the MLA's personal secretary.
'These families are extremely poor. That's why the boys had gone out of the state to work. They panicked and did whatever they could,' he said. 'Had the issue not come to our notice in time, it could've ended in tragedy.'
The MLA escalated the matter and informed the Chief Secretary, the Tamil Nadu DGP, and the Jharkhand DGP.
Prompt coordination between Tamil Nadu and Jharkhand authorities ensured swift action. Tamil Nadu police managed to trace the men after the abductors had already withdrawn cash using ATMs and left the youth near Salem railway station.
According to official information, the rescued youth were later brought to the Salem police station, and arrangements are underway to get them safely back to Jharkhand. Police in Jharkhand have recorded the statements of some of the men, who used borrowed phones since their own mobile devices were also stolen by the abductors.
Azharuddin said one of the men managed to call the family from someone else's phone and confirm that they were safe. 'That's how the police were able to track their location.'
'This incident could have been catastrophic if action was delayed even by 15 or 20 minutes,' he said. 'It's a matter of grave concern and raises questions about the security of migrant workers in destination states.'
DGP of Jharkhand, Anurag Gupta, told The Indian Express that with the collaboration with the Tamil Nadu police and administration, they successfully rescued the men on Monday and are expected to bring them home in the coming days.
The perpetrators fled after robbing the young men and leaving them at the Salem bus stand.

Amit Shah comes to Lok Sabha armed with proof on Pahalgam attackers
NEW DELHI: The three Pakistani terrorists who gunned down 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, in J&K's Pahalgam in front of their horror-struck families, were cornered and killed on Monday in a joint operation by the Army, CRPF and police in Dachigam area on the outskirts of Srinagar, home minister Amit Shah disclosed in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Participating in the debate on Operation Sindoor, Shah identified the three attackers killed in 'Operation Mahadev' as Suleman alias Faizal Jatt alias Anas alias Usama Markaz; Hamza Afghan; and Jibran, all Pakistanis and affiliated to the Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT). Suleman, a top-grade LeT commander and the mastermind of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, was also involved in the Oct 2024 attack at the Z-Morh construction site in Gagangir, in which six labourers and a local doctor were killed, he said. Both Hamza and Jibran were also 'A-grade' LeT terrorists. The three were identified by family members of two locals arrested on June 22 by NIA - Parvaiz and Bashir. Himachal makes dope testing for ‘Chitta' mandatory in police recruitment
Days after Himachal Pradesh Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla expressed concern about the drug menace in the State, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday said his government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards the drug menace, even as it decided to introduce mandatory dope testing for 'Chitta' (heroin) during police recruitment. He made the remark during the Cabinet meeting held under his chairmanship in Shimla. The Departments of Police, Social Justice and Empowerment, and Health elaborated the steps being taken to combat drug abuse in Himachal Pradesh. 'The State government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy towards the drug menace and is fully committed to protecting the youth from falling victim to drug abuse,' said Mr. Sukhu, adding that there's an urgent need of coordinated actions to dismantle drug networks to protect the youth of the State from addiction. The Cabinet decided to introduce mandatory dope testing for 'Chitta' (heroin) during police recruitment. Besides, all new government employees will be required to submit an undertaking confirming they do not consume 'Chitta', said an official statement, adding that strict action would be taken against any government employees found involved in drug-related activities. 'It was informed during the meeting that the drug abuse situation in Himachal Pradesh remains under control, with Narcotic Drugs And Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 cases accounting for nine percent of total cases, significantly lower than Punjab's 20%. Under the tenure of the present government, 45 cases were registered, and properties worth Rs 42.22 crore belonging to individuals involved in drug-related activities were attached. This marks a more than two-fold increase in the number of cases and a three-fold increase in the value of properties seized as compared to previous periods,' it added. The Chief Minister directed the Health Department to intensify its efforts in capacity building, awareness generation, treatment, counseling, follow-up, and rehabilitation of individuals affected by drug addiction. Besides, he emphasized the need for a coordinated approach, asking all concerned departments to work jointly in waging a comprehensive war against substance abuse. He also stressed the importance of regular interstate border monitoring to prevent drug trafficking.
