China's export curbs on critical minerals crucial for India's electronics sectors are no longer mere warnings but a wake-up call for New Delhi, underscoring the need for urgent measures like reverse-engineering of low- to mid-tech imports to cut overreliance on Beijing, think tank GTRI said on Thursday. In a series of calculated moves, China has stepped up its use of economic leverage to constrain India's industrial ambitions, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said.Over the past year, Beijing has systematically restricted exports of critical raw materials and engineering support, sending a clear warning to New Delhi as geopolitical tensions and trade realignments intensify.Since mid-2023, China has imposed curbs on exports of critical minerals such as gallium and germanium -- essential for India's electronics, EV, and defence industries.Similarly in late 2024, the restrictions were extended to graphite, dealing a direct blow to India's clean energy and battery manufacturing sectors, it said, adding that citing national security reasons, Beijing has cloaked these actions in strategic ambiguity, while tightening its grip on supply chains that India is still dependent on."The pressure mounted further in June 2025, when Chinese battery giant CATL reportedly directed Foxconn to withdraw all Chinese engineers from its manufacturing unit near Chennai. The move disrupted timelines and coordination at a crucial time for India's electronics and EV supply chain buildout," GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said.India's imports from China surged in FY25, while exports declined sharply. It has led to a widening trade deceit of USD 100 billion.Chinese firms now supply over 80 per cent of India's needs in laptops, solar panels, antibiotics, viscose yarn, and lithium-ion batteries, deepening strategic vulnerabilities."India must act to slash Chinese import dependence. There is an urgent need to do reverse-engineering of low- to mid-tech imports, domestic production incentives, and long-term investment in deep-tech manufacturing to reduce overreliance on a geopolitical rival and build economic resilience," Srivastava said.He added that a strategic and phased approach can help reduce this dependence significantly."The first step is to launch a nationwide reverse-engineering initiative. Sector-specific industrial labs should be set up to deconstruct commonly imported goods and develop standardised, open-access blueprints," he said. These designs can then be shared with Indian MSMEs for niche production and with larger firms for mass manufacturing, he suggested. This model, Srivastava said, combining public R&D and private production, would enable rapid substitution of many high-volume imports."India should also create a 'Localize-100' tracker to monitor progress on localising the top 100 low- and mid-tech imports from China," he said.

Rupee rises 22 paise to 85.72 against U.S. dollar in early trade

The rupee rose 22 paise to 85.72 against the U.S. dollar in early trade on the back of fall in global crude oil prices and a weaker greenback. FII inflows and a positive domestic equity market further boosted the local unit, according to forex traders. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 85.75 against the US dollar before rising further to 85.72, up 22 paise against its previous close. The local unit logged a steep fall of 54 paise to settle at 85.94 against the U.S. dollar on Monday (July 7, 2025). "The rupee recovered towards closing yesterday (Monday) after falling due to heavy dollar demand... Oil companies and importers continued to buy dollars while there may have been some dollar sales from the RBI towards the closing, taking rupee up," Anil Kumar Bhansali, Head of Treasury and Executive Director, Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP, said. "The opening of rupee (on Tuesday) is slightly higher after Asian currencies showed some recovery this morning and it could remain in a range of 85.40-86.00," he said. Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was down 0.37 per cent to USD 69.32 per barrel in futures trade. "Brent oil prices, which approached USD 70 per barrel, fell to USD 69.28 as investors assessed the impact of Trump's latest tariffs on 12 nations while lingering oversupply concerns from rising OPEC+ output added further pressure," Bhansali said. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was down 0.19% to 97.29. Meanwhile, at the domestic equity market, the Sensex was trading 85.39 points higher at 83,527.89, while the Nifty was 16.50 points to 25,477.80. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) purchased equities worth Rs 321.16 crore on a net basis on Monday, according to exchange data.

NSE GIFT City exchange plans first equity listing in foreign currency

The NSE IX exchange, situated in the financial hub of Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, or GIFT City, is initially targeting unlisted companies for the debut Bloomberg By Subhadip Sircar and Saikat Das India's NSE International Exchange is aiming to attract its first equity listing in a foreign currency this quarter, a milestone it says will demonstrate a new fundraising avenue for firms. The NSE IX exchange, situated in the financial hub of Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, or GIFT City, is initially targeting unlisted companies for the debut, chief executive officer V. Balasubramaniam said in an interview. These may be Indian firms with foreign holdings or even Silicon Valley or Delaware-based entities, he said, without providing any names. GIFT City is an initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at positioning India as a global financial hub to rival Dubai or Hong Kong. The zone offers exemptions from certain taxes and regulatory restrictions, making it a more attractive for international capital raising. A number of Chinese companies have gone ahead with international listings in Hong Kong, and some of them have now become global multinationals, Balasubramaniam said. 'It's the same opportunity that GIFT City is offering to Indian corporates.' There are five to six companies preparing to list, he said. The planned listing will help underscore the growing sophistication of India's capital markets and offer companies an alternative to domestic exchanges. A foreign-currency listing in GIFT City may also benefit Indian firms looking to expand globally by reducing currency conversion and hedging costs. The Securities and Exchange Board of India is working with the International Financial Services Centres Authority — GIFT City's unified regulator — to address outstanding regulatory issues, Balasubramaniam said. Once resolved, this will enable already listed Indian companies to raise capital on the international exchanges, he said. 'An Indian company that is already listed can decide to do a follow-on public offering in GIFT City as a separate dollar float, or it could do an offer for sale,' he said. Indian companies have previously accessed overseas markets primarily through instruments such as American depository receipts. Firms in the nation raised more than $20 billion via initial share sales last year. The absence of securities transaction and capital gains taxes in GIFT City is another major incentive for foreign investors, Balasubramaniam said.
