Russia Suggests Trump Is Emboldening Ukraine, Delaying Peace

The Kremlin warned Tuesday that US President Donald Trump's pledge of more weapons for Kyiv and threat of sanctions targeting Russian trading partners could embolden Ukraine and further delay already stalled peace efforts.
Trump a day earlier gave Russia 50 days to strike a peace deal with Ukraine, voicing fresh frustration with Moscow as he laid out an arrangement with NATO to supply Kyiv with new military aid sponsored by the alliance's members.
The Republican forced Moscow and Kyiv to open peace talks to end the conflict, now in its fourth year, but Russia has rejected calls for a ceasefire and launched a record number of drones and missiles at Ukraine in recent months.
Moscow said it needed more time to respond fully to Trump's statement, but hinted it did not appear conducive to successful negotiations.
"It seems that such a decision made in Washington and in NATO countries and directly in Brussels will be perceived by Kyiv not as a signal for peace but for the continuation of the war," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
"President Trump's statement is very serious. We certainly need time to analyse what was said in Washington," he told reporters in Moscow's first reaction to the comments.
Trump warned that if no deal was concluded, he would slap severe tariffs on Russia's remaining trade partners in a bid to impede Moscow's ability to finance its military offensive.
Pumped up by huge state spending on soldiers and weapons, as well as by redirecting vital energy exports to the likes of China and India, Russia's economy has so far defied Western hopes sanctions would push it into a deep recession.
Two rounds of talks between Russia and Ukraine, held in Turkey in recent months, have made no progress towards ending the fighting and yielded only large-scale prisoner exchanges.
Tens of thousands have been killed since Russia launched its offensive, with millions forced to flee their homes in eastern and southern Ukraine, which has been decimated by aerial attacks and ground assaults.
Putin has repeatedly rejected calls for a ceasefire and his negotiators have demanded Ukraine shun all Western military support, and pull out of four regions in its east and south that Moscow claims to have annexed.
Kyiv and the West have rejected them as a call for Ukraine's de-facto capitulation.
Peskov said Russia was open to another round of talks and was "waiting for proposals from the Ukrainian side on the timing."
Kyiv has called it "pointless" to hold further talks with the current Russian delegation.
Denmark and the Netherlands on Tuesday said they were looking to participate in Trump's plan for Europe to buy American weapons for Ukraine.
Under the scheme, some of NATO's European members would pay Washington for the weapons, including vital Patriot air defence systems, which would then be shipped to Ukraine.
The United States has been Kyiv's most important military backer since Russia launched its offensive in 2022, but Trump's erratic policy on whether to support Ukraine and his attempts to engage Putin have spooked Europe and Kyiv.
In Moscow, residents dismissed Trump's statement as little more than politics.
"It's a game of chess," Svetlana, an aviation engineer said.
"There will still be negotiations... (Trump) gave 50 days, and then there will be more... We are waiting for the next move of our president," the 47-year-old said.
Russia has pummelled Ukrainian cities with regular aerial attacks in recent weeks as its troops advance slowly across the battlefield in the east and south.
Ukrainian soldiers fighting in the east were hopeful but cautious following Trump's promise of air defences and weapons.
"I don't believe him. There have been too many promises that haven't been kept," said one soldier with the call-sign "Shah."
Others were worried it might be too little too late.
"Of course it's good, but at the same time, time has been lost. Those Patriots could have been sent sooner and could have helped a lot," another fighter called "Master" told AFP.
"If there is even the slightest chance to improve the situation for us and worsen it for them, then that's already positive," Ruslan, a 29-year-old soldier, said. Gavin Newsom's Chances of Clinching 2028 Dem Nomination See Spike While Publicly Feuding With Trump Officials

California Gov. Gavin Newsom's chances of clinching the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination are seeing a spike as he feuds with Trump administration officials and MAGA influencers. California Gov. Gavin Newsom's chances of clinching the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination are seeing a spike as he feuds with Trump administration officials and MAGA influencers. Ever since President Donald Trump came into office in January, Newsom has not hesitated to call out Trump officials or Republican lawmakers for sharing what he perceives as false narratives, whether it be about California or the Democratic party. During the Palisades wildfires, the governor repeatedly took to X to call out and sometimes correct officials for information they were giving about the situation, and again with the anti-ICE protests in Los Angeles. — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) July 11, 2025 Over the last several days, Newsom has turned that fire to various officials on a variety of topics. He berated U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Commissioner Rodney Scott , saying he made kids "pose for photos" after Scott posted about discovering teens working at a California marijuana facility. On Tuesday, he called out Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk for seemingly agreeing with Trump's push to stop bringing up questions about the Epstein files. Prior to that, Newsom put Vice President JD Vance on blast for taking a family vacation to Disneyland in California while Trump's administration was "gutting our Medicaid system" and "militarizing America's streets." JD is back in won't take the time to debate and defend gutting our Medicaid system, taking away kids school meals, militarizing America's streets, or adding trillions to the debt. Instead, he's off to Disneyland. Probably to detain Mickey Mouse at this rate. — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) July 13, 2025 Newsom also slammed Texas Attorney General and candidate for Senate Ken Paxton for saying that legislators should be "arrested" if they refuse to do a job they were elected for after learning that House Democrats reportedly encouraged Texas House Democrats not to help Texas Republicans help redraw Congressional districts. The governor's unrelenting fire against the Trump administration has led market predictors to view him as the top potential Democratic presidential candidate in 2028, according to the market prediction site Kalshi . As of Wednesday afternoon, Newsom's chances of winning the presidential nomination was at 18%. Since May, the California governor has had a strong lead over the next two top contenders, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, whose chances stand at 13% and 10% respectively. As of Wednesday afternoon, Newsom's chances of winning the presidential nomination was at 18%. New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg chances stand at 13% and 10% respectively. Newsom's lead over Ocasio-Cortez has continued to widen since July 6, when the Department of Justice and FBI's memo declaring that Epstein had "no client list" was released. He saw another spike on July 12 when he targeted Vance, and another spike July 16 following more calls for transparency on the Epstein files. As policies by the Republican majority and Trump continue to raise concerns from Democratic lawmakers and constituents across the country, predictors appear to be taking into account how legislators are pushing back against the administration. Trump Slams 'Stupid' Republicans As Epstein Row Grows

US President Donald Trump blasted "foolish" Republican supporters Wednesday as he went on the attack against anyone questioning his administration's handling of the case of dead sex criminal Jeffrey Epstein. After days of struggling to brush off what he now claims is a Democratic hoax, Trump took his most combative tone yet to try and shut down the issue. "It's all been a big hoax, it's perpetrated by the Democrats. And some stupid Republicans and foolish Republicans fall into the net and so they try and do the Democrats' work," Trump told reporters when asked about Epstein. But Trump is facing the most serious split in his loyal right-wing base since he returned to power, over claims that his administration is covering up lurid details of disgraced financier Epstein's crimes to protect rich and powerful figures. Epstein died by suicide in a New York prison in 2019 -- during Trump's first term -- after being charged with sex trafficking in a scheme where he allegedly groomed young and underage women for abuse by the rich and powerful. The Trump-supporting far-right has long latched on to the scandal, claiming the existence of a secret list of Epstein's powerful clients and that the late financier was in fact murdered in his cell. Trump supporters expected the Republican to answer their questions on his return to office this January but now find themselves being told the conspiracy theories are false. Trump, 79, began on Wednesday by dismissing what he called "my PAST supporters" in a post on his Truth Social network. He said they had "bought into this 'bullshit' hook, line and sinker." He doubled down when he faced repeated questions on the issue in the Oval Office during a visit with Bahrain's visiting crown prince, pinning the blame for the wild conspiracy theories on his opponents. He then sought to deflect, rattling off what he said were a list of his economic and foreign policy achievements and complaining that people were instead "talking about a guy who obviously had some very serious problems who died three, four years ago." "And the sad part, it is people that are really doing the Democrats work. They're stupid people." Asked if his post describing supporters who questioned the White House's line as "past" was effectively disowning them, Trump replied: "No but I lost a lot of faith in certain people." Trump -- who was one of the many currently famous people who were formerly friends with Epstein, but denies having gone to his notorious US Virgin Islands home -- said ahead of his election he would have "no problem" releasing files on the case. But the Justice Department and FBI said in a memo made public earlier this month there is no evidence that the disgraced financier kept a "client list" or was blackmailing powerful figures. They also dismissed the claim that Epstein was murdered in jail, confirming his death by suicide, and said they would not be releasing any more information on the probe. However, reports that nearly three minutes had been cut from prison security camera footage released in an effort to prove the absence of foul play only triggered new speculation. Beyond angering supporters, the issue has opened a schism within his administration, sparking a fiery blow-up between Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy FBI Director Dan Bongino, who is said to be considering resigning. Trump on Wednesday reiterated that Bondi could release "whatever's credible" in the files. Newsom Calls Out MAGA Influencer for 'Falling in Line' With Trump's Epstein Narrative in 'Genius' TikTok

California Gov. Gavin Newsom called out a MAGA influencer for seemingly agreeing with President Donald Trump's push to stop talking about the files on sex offender Jeffrey Epstein in a slideshow of images on TikTok. In a viral TikTok that has since amassed more than 1 million views, Newsom posted a screenshot of him quote tweeting Turning Point USA founder and CEO Charlie Kirk on X. The governor simply wrote "Retweet" in response to a tweet by Kirk from 2019 calling for Trump to launch an investigation into Epstein's alleged crimes. "[Retweet] if you believe @realdonaltrump should order a FULL INVESTIGATION into Epstein's illegal sexual trafficking from the last 30 years and get answers!" Kirk wrote at the time. Newsom included the retweet of Kirk's post along with a photo of Trump and Epstein together placed in a popular meme template of Nickelback lead singer Chad Kroeger holding a picture frame as the band's song "Photograph" plays in the background. The post led to laughter online, as users applauded the governor for using the pro-Trump influencer's words against him. "Gavin keeping his foot on their neck," one user joked. Another wrote, "The level of pettiness is what we all aspire to have." "Charlie Kirk is already falling in line though, say he is going to 'trust the government,'" one user jabbed at the influencer. One simply added, "Genius," while another wrote, "Gavin, you are a legend." During a Monday episode of Kirk's podcast, "The Charlie Kirk Show," the influencer declared that after all of his coverage of the drama surrounding the Department of Justice and FBI's memo declaring that Epstein killed himself and had "no client list," he was "done talking about Epstein." "Plenty was said this last weekend at our event about Epstein," Kirk said . "Honestly, I'm done talking about Epstein for the time being. I'm gonna trust my friends in the administration, I'm gonna trust my friends in the government to do what needs to be done [and] solve it. Ball's in their hands." Following backlash and news coverage of his quote, Kirk returned the following day to walk back those words. He clarified that he never meant that he wanted to "move on" from Epstein, only that he wanted to "focus on other stories" during Monday's episode. Kirk also responded to Newsom's call out by blasting the governor on a list of hot topics he thinks Newsom should "apologize" for, including "failing to cooperate with ICE" and "bankrupting his state by providing free healthcare to illegals."
