Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the wheel of Besiktas' push to be a force in Turkey and Europe again
Besiktas and Shakhtar Donetsk face each other on Thursday in the first leg of a Europa League second qualifying round in Istanbul. It is easily the most attractive and difficult fixture of the eight games for what is still an early stage of European competition, with the Ukrainians perennial Uefa Champions League competitors and Besiktas a Turkish giant. The Europa League doesn't offer the riches of the Champions League, but it is a respected tournament and European football is important for both clubs. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer enters his first full season as Besiktas manager after taking over in January when the team were seventh. A superb start saw them rise up the table to finish fourth. Champions Galatasaray and second-placed Fenerbahce were both defeated by Solskjaer's side, but he was always adamant that joining a club mid-season would always bring challenges. It was similar to his circumstances that saw him installed as Manchester United in December 2018. Now, however, the Besiktas team and their coaching staff is his own. Substantial changes have been made in the summer transfer window – although nothing like the 22 players who left before the start of last season – with some high-profile departures. Veteran Italian striker Ciro Immobile, 35, by far the biggest earner at Besiktas, moved to Bologna in Serie A, while former England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's deal was ripped up and he was paid off with a severance package, his performances deemed not up to scratch. The incoming players have excited fans. English striker Tammy Abraham, 27, has signed on loan from Roma. Another loan player whose arrival has been welcomed is Turkish international Orkun Kokcu. The 24-year-old midfield playmaker was born and raised as a Besiktas fan in the Netherlands before excellent form at Feyenoord earned him a €25 million move to Benfica in 2023, a record signing for a Portuguese club. There are also high hopes for those returning from loans, including Demir Ege Tiknaz and Kartal Yilmaz. This is a younger, leaner Besiktas, and Solskjaer will be expected to continue the improvement and push harder against the Galatasaray/Fenerbahce duopoly. They finished a massive 33 and 22 points ahead of Besiktas last season respectively. 'It's our team from the start in pre-season and we have worked quite hard and will be ready for the Shakhtar game,' Solskjaer told Turkish media last week. 'We have exciting players coming into the club. We came in and the team was not performing well. It was a difficult period – sixth or seventh position and not looking as a Besiktas team should. The team and fans were low on confidence and belief. 'We managed to turn the ship around and ended up in fourth. We worked hard on the mentality and the fitness. 'The president said he wanted to stabilise the club and we did – the team, energy, training ground and culture. So we have hope for this season. The president has shown ambition in the transfer window." Besiktas had the second-best defence last season. Goalscoring was an issue, starting games too slow also a problem. 'Technically we were not good enough to break teams down in a low block,' added Solskjaer. 'We want to be good in possession, counter attacking and pressing. With Tammy we are a different team with a big centre-forward, With Orkun, the right age, the playmaker, too.' Solskjaer is enjoying his time in Turkey. 'Six months here and I've enjoyed every minute,' he said. 'I'm a stable guy. I've felt the passion here. The atmospheres in the stadium have positively surprised me at home. Incredible. 'The games are so stop start. Players stay down; the ball is in play 45 minutes if you are lucky. For me 60 minutes is normal.' The Norwegian also offered a view on what happens off the pitch. 'I'm very glad I didn't play football myself in this era because of social media,' he said. 'It's a killer. 'Footballers are trying their best every day but it's hard to focus on your job when you get criticised or praised a lot. You lose yourself. We work on this to be mentally stable. We want to create a team that the fans will like to watch. We want to create more legends.' One of Besiktas' best performances last season under Solskjaer was against Eyupsor, managed by Turkish football legend Arda Turan. Eyupspor finished third in the Turkish Lig last season. 'Thank you for the inspiration': Zelensky hails Ukrainian boxer Usyk's big win
Ukrainian boxer Olesksandr Usyk basked in the adulation following his fifth round knockout win over Britain's Daniel Dubois at London's Wembley Stadium on Saturday night. It was the latest dazzling victory of a career that has seen him emerge as a national hero in his war-torn homeland. Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky was among the first to congratulate Usyk on his victory. "An undisputed champion. A legend. One of our own," Zelensky wrote on X. "Thank you for the strength and inspiration you give to the whole country with every victory. Thank you for stepping into each fight with Ukraine in your heart." Usyk said "discipline" rather than "motivation" was fuelling his desire to box on after he underlined his status as the supreme heavyweight of his generation. Saturday's success saw the 38-year-old Ukrainian become the undisputed heavyweight world champion for the second time in a career of 24 wins from as many professional fights as he deprived Dubois of his IBF title in commanding fashion. It was also the second time he had beaten Dubois, at 27 some 11 years his junior. And with Usyk having also twice defeated another British world heavyweight champion in Tyson Fury, many are asking what challenges are left for him to conquer in the ring. Usyk told a post-fight press conference that while he was looking forward to an extended rest, and was unsure of his next opponent, he still wanted to continue his brilliant career. "I prepare three-and-a-half months, I don't see my family, my wife," he said. "Every day I live with my team, with 14 guys, in one house, every day only one face. "Now I want to go back home, now I want to make a choice, what next, I will continue boxing, I will continue training. "I don't have motivation, I have discipline, motivation is temporary, today for example, today you have motivation, tomorrow wake up early, you don't have motivation, but when I wake up early in the morning in training, I never have motivation, I have only discipline, because when I wake up, my team too, wake up and we go to training." Saturday's success was Usyk's latest triumph in Britain, where he won Olympic heavyweight gold at the 2012 London Games. "For me, the UK is like a second home because this is where I won all my trophies," he said. Usyk starts heavyweight title week with focus on war in Ukraine
World heavyweight boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk kicked off the big fight build-up in London on Monday with a focus on war in his native Ukraine rather than anything he might face in the ring. The unbeaten 38-year-old takes on Britain's IBF champion Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium on Saturday in a rematch for the undisputed title that puts the Ukrainian's own WBC, WBA and WBO belts on the line. Usyk's first public appearance was in the city's central Trafalgar Square to unveil a recreated Ukrainian 'Kestrel' mosaic alongside British entrepreneur Richard Branson. The original artwork, created in the now-Russian controlled port city of Mariupol in 1967, was severely damaged during the invasion that started in February 2022 and an identical copy has been funded by online retailer Rozetka and the Ukraine-wow agency. Organisers say it will tour internationally as a symbol of repair and hope. "Russia destroyed in my city, in my country, Russia destroyed hospitals, Russia destroyed schools, Russia destroyed Ukrainian lives," Usyk told the crowd, thanking Britain for its support for Ukraine. "But we will survive. We will rebuild our country, like a mosaic, piece by piece." The boxer then walked, surrounded by bodyguards and a scrum of fans, to nearby Pall Mall for photographs in front of a statue of 19th century nurse Florence Nightingale and the 1853-56 Crimean War memorial. The Nightingale statue was holding a prosthetic limb, painted in the blue and yellow colours of Ukraine, over her usual oil lamp. Branson, who stood alongside Usyk, is a backer of the Superhumans centre specialist clinic in Lviv that treats and rehabilitates war victims. Usyk, who was born in the Crimean city of Simferopol that was annexed by Russia in 2014, also launched a campaign through his foundation to raise funds to build four apartment buildings and house 64 displaced families in Ukraine. The boxer spends time in Ukraine when not training in Spain and frequently references the situation in his country, campaigning for peace. Last month he invited US President Donald Trump to live in his house in Ukraine for a week to help him understand what the country was going through. "Only one week. I will give him my house. Live please in Ukraine and watch what is going on every night," he told the BBC. "Every night there are bombs and flights above my house. Bombs, rocket. Every night. It's enough." Usyk and Dubois will have open workouts on Wednesday, a final face-to-face press conference at Wembley on Thursday and the public weigh-in on Friday.
