Oklahoma Sooners attending NFL Rookie Minicamps
The Oklahoma Sooners had just two players chosen in April's 2025 NFL Draft, breaking a streak of 22 straight seasons with at least three players selected. But, plenty of former OU standouts will be getting their first taste of the NFL this week, as rookie minicamps are happening all over the league.
NFL rookie minicamps are three days long, and consist of draft picks, undrafted free agents, and non-roster invitees. All 32 teams hold one during one of the first two weekends in May.
Oklahoma's two draftees were the two best players on the team in 2024. Linebacker Danny Stutsman was picked 112th overall in the fourth round by the New Orleans Saints. Defensive back Billy Bowman Jr. was selected 118th overall in the fourth round by the Atlanta Falcons. The two were the veteran leaders of the team in Year 1 in the SEC, and both spent four seasons in Norman.
The Sooners also had plenty of players sign with teams as undrafted free agents; earning contracts despite their UDFA status. Offensive lineman Michael Tarquin signed with the Carolina Panthers. Defensive lineman Da'Jon Terry signed with the Los Angeles Rams. Defensive lineman Ethan Downs signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Defensive lineman Trace Ford signed with the New York Giants.
But OU also had a slew of players who get to continue their dreams of pro football with a minicamp invite. They'll be longshots to make the roster, but they've still got a chance to impress the teams that extended an invite to them.
Punter Luke Elzinga will attend minicamp with the Tennessee Titans. He was excellent in his season-and-a-half as a starter, and was a force for the Sooners last year.
Tight end Jake Roberts has accepted minicamp invites from both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Las Vegas Raiders. He spent just one season in his hometown of Norman, being mostly used as a blocking tight end. He caught the final touchdown of the season in the Armed Forces Bowl loss against Navy.
Defensive lineman Caiden Woullard will attend minicamp with the Indianapolis Colts. He also spent just one year in Norman, and played well at defensive end for Miguel Chavis. His collegiate career began at Miami (Ohio).
Offensive lineman Spencer Brown also spent one season as a Sooner. He'll attend minicamp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and arrived in Norman via Michigan State for the 2024 season.
Defensive back Woodi Washington accepted a minicamp invite from the Baltimore Ravens. Like Stutsman, Bowman and Downs, he was a veteran leader on the defense a season ago. Washington was the longest-tenured Sooner in 2024.
Of the 19 draft-eligible Sooners from last year's roster, 17 entered the draft. Of those 17 players, 11 will get to show what they've got in rookie minicamps and try to begin finding their place in the National Football League.

Rivalry game with Texas may be another indicator of how Oklahoma fares under coach Brent Venables
Without a doubt, a measuring stick game for any Oklahoma football coach happens to be the annual October rivalry matchup against Texas in Dallas. The current Sooners' coach, Brent Venables, knows full well about the magnitude of the game commonly known as the Red River Rivalry. In Venables' first three seasons as OU's coach, the game with the Longhorns seems to act as an indicator of the Sooners' fortunes the remainder of the season. In Venables' first season as OU's coach (2022), the Sooners were demolished, 49-0. It eventually led to a 6-7 finish, OU's first losing record since 1998. But the following year, the Sooners got revenge, using a TD pass in the final seconds from Dillon Gabriel to Nic Anderson to pull off a thrilling 34-30 win. That was arguably the high point of a season in which Oklahoma reached the Top 10 and won 10 games. Last season, though, was a similar script to Venables' first season, as Texas handed OU a 34-3 defeat. Like 2022, the Sooners eventually finished 6-7, and won just two conference games in their initial journey through the Southeastern Conference. He was asked about the Red River Rivalry on Wednesday during Oklahoma's appearance at SEC Media Days in Atlanta. 'I would say two of the three years, we were at some key positions where we were in a really tough spot, but I think two years ago, it was reflective of the type of game that it should be, and will be moving forward,' Venables said. 'But we've got to play better, we've got to coach better, play better, and that's a wonderful venue, as good as there is in all of college football (Dallas' Cotton Bowl). 'I've said it a lot, it's better than any national championship environment that I've been in. … So, we'll get back on track, and look forward to that opportunity in October, when it gets here.' And Venables and the Sooners are hoping this year's game will be more like the 2023 version instead of the ones from 2022 and 2024. The Kansas City Chiefs' offense in 2025, for most, has a couple of question marks around it, one being the offensive line, but also, can Patrick Mahomes' weapons stay healthy? The drop-off in production last season could be attributed to a host of things, but the main reason was that Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown both missed significant chunks of time due to injury and never were on the field together. That should change. The run game with Isiah Pacheco has also been in the spotlight with the running back fighting back from injury last season, but when he returned, he failed to produce as we know he can. When looking at the Chiefs' "triplets" as CBS Sports' Jared Dubin calls them, of Mahomes, Rice, and Pacheco, when ranking all 32 teams' top three weapons, Dubin has Kansas City at No. 5. "This is the lowest the Chiefs have ranked since Mahomes' first season as the starter," Dubin writes. "They've were ninth prior to his debut, and have since checked in second, first, first, second, fourth, second and first before falling to fifth this season. If you ask me, it's too low. "People are ascribing a drop-off to the team that, in my opinion, was caused by offensive line play and injuries (to both Pacheco and the entire wide receiver corps). I think we see Kansas City get back to a more free-wheeling, wide-open offense this season and jump back near the top of the rankings a year from now." There's every reason to suggest that we will see a significant bounce-back from Andy Reid's offense this upcoming season. Yes, they still won 15 games last year, but we don't expect that to happen again. But what we do expect is for the offense to score more than 22.6 points per game (ranked 15th), and for Mahomes to average more than 245 passing yards per game. If his weapons are healthy, both should see a serious uptick in improvement. Many are doubting the Chiefs in 2025, with some thinking they are about to fall off the proverbial cliff, but with a top-five offensive trio in their ranks, we bet they might just surprise a few people this season. Matthew Stafford's return named most impactful move in 2025 offseason
The Los Angeles Rams could have had a completely different 2025 outlook if Matthew Stafford decided not to return to the team. While there were rumors that the quarterback would want to leave without a pay raise, Stafford ultimately signed a new deal with the team to remain in L.A. The decision had a ripple effect on the Rams and the rest of the league, as teams who were interested in Stafford had to look elsewhere while the Rams could focus the rest of the offseason on finding talent to add around him. Therefore, it shouldn't be a surprise that CBS Sports' Tyler Sullivan named Stafford's return as the most impactful move of the 2025 NFL offseason. With Stafford, L.A. is in the Super Bowl conversation thanks to the continued presence of Sean McVay, along with an emerging defense. Without him, the Rams likely would've been forced to look at other options like Jimmy Garoppolo, Aaron Rodgers, or some draft prospect. Regardless of who would've been under center, Los Angeles would've been categorically worse and nowhere close to the Super Bowl ceiling it currently possesses. Stafford is the tide that raises all boats in L.A. Why do you think the Rams immediately turned around and won a Super Bowl the year he joined the team? In any event, the Rams have their short-term plan at quarterback locked in for at least 2025, and they'll continue to push all the chips into the middle of the table to try and bring home another Lombardi Trophy before Stafford's time in the NFL is up.
