FIFA's Wenger promises better pitch quality at 2026 World Cup

FIFA's Global Football Development chief Arsene Wenger acknowledged that the quality of pitches hosting Club World Cup matches in the U.S. was not good enough, but insisted it would be better when the country co-hosts the 2026 World Cup.
The pitches, often very dry and sprinkled with water during cooling breaks or at halftime, have been widely criticized, mainly by coaches and players of the European teams taking part.
'I've been personally on the pitch at Orlando,' former Arsenal manager Wenger said on Saturday. 'It's not at the level that the European clubs are used to because it's not perfect, but that will be rectified for the World Cup next year.'
Paris St Germain coach Luis Enrique raised the issue early in the expanded Club World Cup tournament.
'The ball bounces like a rabbit,' Luis Enrique said after his team's opening 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid.
'Today, for example, the field used to be artificial turf, and now it's natural grass laid over it, which means it has to be watered manually. It's a big problem for the way we play.'
'FIFA really needs to take this seriously. Not just the stadium fields but also the training pitches. If we're calling this the best club tournament in the world, it should have world‑class facilities. I can't imagine an NBA game played on a court full of holes.'

Sure Maier is no Harris but unlike what Saskatchewan went last through with the inexperience of Shea Patterson, who made his first career CFL start in 2024 when Harris was injured, Maier — a veteran of 45 career starts — looked comfortable in the pocket all night even if he didn't make every throw (13 of 23). Experienced depth can pay dividends. Article content 3. Leading the way in the running game was A.J. Ouellette, who had a career-high 139 yards on a career-high 23 carries in his sixth CFL season. While the Lions had two effective touchdown drives, aided by the play of running back James Butler, Masoli threw three interceptions including a costly pick six that was the turning point in the game. If the Lions (1-3) want to contend for a playoff spot this year, they better hope Rourke can return soon. Article content 6. After notching his first interception in the CFL since 2018 last week against Toronto, Riders defensive back Tevaughn Campbell was the one scoring on that pick-six as he put exclamation on the first half with an interception returned for a touchdown to put the Riders up 16-7 at the break. Filling that cornerback spot was one of the biggest needs for the Roughriders this off-season and Campbell — who has adjusted back to the CFL game after six years in the NFL — has been a great addition.

Chelsea coach Maresca says US ‘is not the right place' for Club World Cup after lightning delay
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca criticized FIFA for holding the Club World Cup in the United States after his club's match against Benfica on Saturday was delayed for two hours due to lightning and took nearly five hours to complete. Fans were told to vacate the seating bowl of Bank of America Stadium with four minutes left in regulation, although it never rained at the venue. Chelsea went on to beat Benfica 4-1 in extra time. If 'they are already suspending six, seven eight games, probably there is something that is not working well,' Maresca said, adding that the United States 'is not the right place to do this competition.' Montreal beats New York City FC 1-0 on Victor Loturi's goal to net first home win
MONTREAL (AP) — Victor Loturi scored in the 23rd minute and Montreal won its first home game this season in nine attempts with a 1-0 victory over New York City FC on Saturday night. Montreal (3-12-5) completed the season sweep over New York (8-7-4) for the first time ever. Dante Sealy found himself isolated with a defender on the right side of the 18-yard box and he sent in a powerful shot that was spilled to Loturi for a one-touch finish. It was Loturi's first goal for the club. Montreal had two other good opportunities to double the lead in the second half. Luca Petrasso was left unmarked in front of the goal following a corner kick, but he was unable to control the bouncing ball. Moments later, Jules-Anthony Vilsaint was denied by a fingertip save from Tomas Romero. Jonathan Sirois secured his fourth clean sheet of the season.
