Monsoon floods sweep away 18 people and main bridge linking Nepal to China

Arab Times2 days ago
KATHMANDU, Nepal, July 8, (AP): A mountain river flooded by monsoon rains swept away the main bridge connecting Nepal with China and 18 people were also swept away by the flooding Tuesday, Nepali authorities said. Rescue efforts were underway as officials assess the damage and search for the missing people. An army helicopter was able to lift people stranded by the flooding.
Police said 95 rescuers were already at the area and more are expected to join in rescue efforts. The flooding on the Bhotekoshi River destroyed the Friendship Bridge at Rasuwagadi, which is 120 kilometers (75 miles) north of the capital, Kathmandu, in the early hours of Tuesday. The flooding also swept away several houses and trucks that were parked at the border for customs inspections.
Hundreds of electric vehicles imported from China were also parked at the border point. The 18 missing are 12 Nepali citizens and six Chinese nationals, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. The destruction of the bridge has halted all trade from China to Nepal through this route.
The longer alternative is for goods to be shipped from China to India and then brought overland to Nepal. Monsoon rains that begin in June and end in September often cause severe flooding in Nepal, disrupting infrastructure and endangering lives.

Hundreds gather at high school stadium to honor the many lost to Texas floods

KERRVILLE, Texas, July 10, (AP): Several hundred people gathered for a worship ceremony at a high school stadium in Texas on Wednesday evening to remember the at least 120 people who died in the catastrophic flash floods over the July Fourth holiday, as well the many still missing. "Our communities were struck with tragedy literally in the darkness,' Wyatt Wentrcek, a local youth minister, told the crowd in the bleachers of Tivy Antler Stadium in Kerrville. "Middle of the night.' During a series of prayers for the victims and the more than 160 people still believed to be missing in hard-hit Kerr County, which includes Kerrville, people in the crowd clutched one another and brushed away tears. Many attendees wore blue shirts with the school's slogan, "Tivy Fight Never Die,' or green ribbons for Camp Mystic, the century-old all-girls Christian summer camp in Kerr County where at least 27 campers and counselors died. Officials said five campers and one counselor have still not been found. Ricky Pruitt, with the Kerrville Church of Christ, told the crowd that they gathered intentionally at a place where they had celebrated victories and experienced losses on the field. "Tonight is very different than all of those nights," he said. The event was held as search crews and volunteers continued to scour miles along the Guadalupe River for the people still missing . In air boats, helicopters and on horseback, crews looked in trees and mounds below their feet, while search dogs sniffed for any sign of buried bodies. With almost no hope of finding anyone alive, searchers said they were focused on bringing the families of the missing people some closure. The floods are now the deadliest from inland flooding in the US since 1976, when Colorado's Big Thompson Canyon flooded, killing 144 people, said Bob Henson, a meteorologist with Yale Climate Connections. Officials have been seeking more information about those who were in the Hill Country, a popular tourist destination, during the holiday weekend but did not register at a camp or a hotel and may have been in the area without many people knowing, Gov. Greg Abbott has said. Public officials in the area have come under repeated criticism amid questions about the timeline of what happened and why widespread warnings were not sounded and more preparations were not made.

China hit by floods, landslides, heat as extreme weather takes its toll

Torrential rains displace thousands, expose China's ageing flood defenses BEIJING: Torrential rains swept across swathes of China on Wednesday as Tropical Storm Danas drenched coastal tech hubs while monsoonal rains further inland unleashed deadly landslides and flash floods over a 1,400-km (870-mile) arc. Compounding the challenge for authorities, a subtropical high-pressure system has been baking the $19 trillion economy's more north-easterly seaboard and central provinces since last week, straining power grids and parching croplands. The world's No 2 economy faces growing threats from extreme weather, which meteorologists link to climate change. Each year, the impact threatens to wipe out tens of billions of dollars worth of commercial activity, alongside loss of life, as ageing flood defenses are overwhelmed and infrastructure gaps - such as limited access to air conditioning - are exposed. Chinese weather authorities urged residents to stay indoors as Storm Danas - which has weakened from a typhoon after claiming two lives in Taiwan - began dumping the water it had sucked up over the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait on the coastal provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian. Danas is forecast to deposit up to 300 millimeters (30 centimeters) of rain in some parts, shutting schools and putting officials along rivers feeding key ports in the cities of Fuzhou and Xiamen on alert for flash floods, according to China's state broadcaster. Although no longer a typhoon, Danas' residual vortex and the substantial amount of water it carries could still wreak havoc in southern China, where rapid urbanization has sealed vast stretches of land beneath impermeable concrete. That risk materialized some 1,500 km (932 miles) away in Yibin, a city in southwestern Sichuan province, where over 6,000 people were evacuated on Wednesday after 14 hours of rain. State broadcaster CCTV showed firefighters carrying residents out of rising waters in the lower floors of apartment buildings. In Zhaotong, a city about a three-hour drive from Yibin, more than 7,000 people were evacuated and five were reported missing amid heavy rains, CCTV reported on Wednesday. One county recorded 227.8 mm of rainfall within 24 hours, the highest local single-day total since records began in 1958. Meanwhile, over 300 people had to be relocated following a flash flood near the foothills of the Himalayas in China's Tibet, caused by a river in Gyirong bursting its banks. Conditions in northern China were not much better, as authorities in the city of Shijiazhuang in Hebei province activated emergency flood protocols after some districts received more than 100 millimeters of overnight rain. The subtropical high-pressure system, straddling the monsoonal clouds in China's interior and the rain bands of Danas, continued to hang over central China and the eastern seaboard running from Shanghai towards Beijing on Wednesday, bringing near-record heat to the mega-cities of Shanghai, Wuhan and Changsha. People in China's northeast were encouraged to avoid going outside during the hottest hours of the day and to keep hydrated, following reports of heatstroke-related fatalities over the past week. — AFP China does not provide an official count of heat-related deaths, although domestic media occasionally report fatalities citing local authorities. In 2022, the country endured a 79-day heatwave from mid-June to late August — its worst since 1961. A 2023 study published in the medical journal The Lancet estimated that more than 50,000 heat-related deaths occurred that year. – Reuters

Multiple earthquakes kill 2 in Guatemala, causing landslides and evacuations

GUATEMALA, July 9, (AP): A series of dozens of earthquakes were recorded in the span of hours in Guatemala, leaving two dead when rocks fell on their vehicle, authorities said. Landslides left several others buried. More than 37 earthquakes and aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 3.0 to 5.6 were reported in Guatemala Tuesday afternoon, said Edwin Rodas, director of the National Institute for Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology. The tremors resulted in the evacuation of buildings, landslides, and minor property damage, officials said, adding they were felt as far away as El Salvador. The two men killed were traveling in a pickup truck on a local road in the department of Escuintla when the rocks fell from a hillside onto the vehicle, firefighters said. Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo said at a press conference Tuesday that the main epicenter of the quakes was in the department of Sacatepéquez, with aftershocks in the regions of Escuintla and Guatemala department. At least five people were buried by landslides, but emergency responders were able to rescue two, he added. The National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction declared an orange alert, the second-highest on the emergency scale. The US Geological Survey reported a 4.8 magnitude earthquake at 3:11 p.m. local time, 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) southwest of the town of Amatitlán, south of Guatemala City, with a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). It then reported another 5.7 magnitude quake 3 kilometers (2 miles) northwest of San Vicente Pacaya, a municipality in Escuintla, in the south-central region of the country. Another 4.8 magnitude quake was reported 6 kilometers (4 miles) northwest of Palín, also in Escuintla.
