In today's reel age, vertical content will surely click with Kannada audiences: Manvita

Time of India16 hours ago
With attention spans shrinking in the age of scrolling, the new generation of audiences are craving entertainment that that they can enjoy from the comfort of their homes, right on their phones, believes Manvita Kamath, adding that this was the reason behind her latest move: starring in a vertical format OTT Kannada series — a first for her and an exciting experiment for the industry.
What makes this project even more groundbreaking for Kannada cinema is its subscription model. 'People have to subscribe to watch the series, which is essentially like buying a movie ticket for content that you can watch on your phone. This is a big experiment, and if it works and the response is good, it will be a major win for our industry,' she adds. In a chat with us, she talks about the Kannada film industry and the OTT space, the role of screenwriting in shaping a narrative and more:
'I BELIEVE VERTICAL VIEWING HAS ITS OWN AUDIENCE'
While some might argue that long-form horizontal content on OTT still dominates, Manvita feels both formats can co-exist.
'Horizontal viewing is a different market altogether; it is still huge, especially for people who want to binge-watch. But vertical content has its own audience, especially among the younger crowd who live on their phones. That said, the real challenge today is cracking the internet's algorithm.
You'll see a silly video go viral with millions of views, while something meaningful struggles.'
'KANNADA INDUSTRY MISSED OUT ON OPPORTUNITIES IN THE OTT SPACE'
She notes that the Kannada film industry's relationship with streaming platforms has been a mixed bag.
'While some shows and films, like Ayana Mane and Murphy, gained traction once they hit digital platforms, the industry as a whole hasn't found its footing in the streaming world. When OTT platforms first started investing in regional content, I don't think we used that opportunity wisely. We didn't focus enough on quality.
And if you don't deliver what a streaming platform expects, they won't come back. Quality isn't just about good visuals; it's crucially about the content itself,' she explains.
'AS AN INDUSTRY, WE NEED TO EXPLORE MORE ROOTED STORIES'
Drawing parallels with
Malayalam cinema
and how it he leveraged the OTT space, Manvita says, 'Malayalam cinema is doing so well globally because their stories are culturally rooted. Karnataka, too, has such a rich and vast culture, beyond just Bengaluru, Mysuru, or coastal areas. There are so many rich, diverse stories waiting to be told — we just need to research and be open to experimenting.'
'SCREENPLAY PLAYS A HUGE ROLE IN SHAPING A NARRATIVE'
Screenplay is paramount, believes Manvita. 'The same story can be told a hundred ways. How you present it — your perspective, your screenplay — that truly matters. My film Kendasampige, for instance, clicked because of its raw, realistic energy and execution, despite being a low-budget true story,' she explains.

Ronth Movie Review: Roshan Mathew, Dileesh Pothan starrer is a grim thriller that haunts one to the core

Ronth is a Malayalam-language police procedural thriller with Roshan Mathew and Dileesh Pothan in the lead roles. As the film hit the big screens on June 13, 2025, it is now available for streaming on JioHotstar. If you missed out on watching it in theaters or waiting to see it on OTT, here's the Pinkvilla review for you to check out. The Plot Ronth tells the tale of two police officers, CPO Dinnath and Grade SI Yohannan, who are assigned a patrolling job. As the rookie cop and veteran officer embark on their night's journey, both face their own demons and dilemmas affecting various people. What are all the events that take place in their lives over the single night, and how do both of them survive form the whole story. The Good Ronth is yet another thriller from director Shahi Kabir, after ventures like Nayattu, Ela Veezha Poonchira, and Officer on Duty. In yet another police thriller, this film features two separate officers: one a naive and hopeful rookie, and the other a veteran cop, seasoned and grim. Reminiscent of Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke's Training Day, the film begins with their contrasting natures rubbing off against each other. However, with Shahi Kabir's writing, the flick feels not as if two characters are joining together, but more like a single character from two ends of their life arc. Instead of spoonfeeding, the movie manages to make us understand the characterization of what might happen to a young officer after several years within the force. As the story is inspired by real-life events, the writing takes shape, remaining rooted in reality rather than relying on heroic standards. The moral compass of these characters erodes with each subsequent event, ultimately leaving us to wonder how they would survive. While there are stereotypical aspects from Shahi Kabir's writing, the movie does not fail to become a directorial marvel. Moving on to the technical aspects, the film's musical score is composed by Anil Johnson; the tracks create a grim and haunting effect. With Manesh Madhavan handling the cinematography to a great extent, Praveen Mangalath manages to keep the editing consistent, avoiding an overflow that would exceed the limited duration. The Bad While most aspects of Ronth are laudable, there are moments from the film that feel exhausting or somewhat repetitive. The attitude of characters interacting with others within the movie's realm often feels like a stereotypical trope, as seen in most of Shahi Kabir's writings. While this may be justified as a writer's artistic integrity, this seems a bit too much to be the norm in every single film. However, this doesn't affect the movie's effectiveness in making us feel haunted with its grim and dark narration. The Performances Ronth features Roshan Mathew and Dileesh Pothan in the lead roles. As both the powerhouse actors come together, Roshan embraces naivety as a young and bright-eyed officer who is hopeful about the world. However, Dileesh Pothan balances the scale with his character being a seasoned officer who has grown weary of the unwavering world. His attitude towards the people around him highlights how he has witnessed several haunting incidents over the years. With impressive performances by Krisha Kurup and other supporting actors, the film boasts an ensemble cast that shines in its acting. Watch the trailer: The Verdict Ronth is a police procedural thriller that is unlike any other in the genre. While criticisms can be made about its stereotypes, the movie is definitely a thrilling venture worth watching.

Jeethu Joseph warns makers of Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3. Here's everything we know

The much-anticipated film Drishyam 3, featuring Mohanlal and helmed by Jeethu Joseph, is currently in works. While the Malayalam film is yet to hit the shooting floors, reports about its Hindi version, starring Ajay Devgn, might head to production first. Amid this, Jeethu Joseph clarified that his Malayalam flick will be the first to move ahead. In an interview with Mathrubhumi, the filmmaker warned of legal action to prevent the Hindi version, starring Ajay Devgn, from getting ahead of the original. Jeetu said that he prevented the makers of the Hindi version of Drishyam 3 from starting earlier than Mohanlal's film, which is the original. He said, 'There were demands on making Malayalam and Hindi versions together, but we haven't decided on those matters. There were initially some plans to start in Hindi first, but after a hint was given that this would be dealt with legally, they backed off from it.' The alleged tiff between the film versions began when reports claimed that Drishyam 3 in Hindi was about to begin production soon. However, Jeethu said that the original film is still in the scripting phase and won't begin filming until October this year. The Hindi adaptation will only commence after the Malayalam one, asserted Jeethu. Speaking at a recent event, Jeethu said, 'I just completed the climax of Drishyam 3 last night. It's been a period of intense pressure.' Drishyam is a widely successful film franchise. The first installment of the film in Malayalam was released in 2013 under the direction of Jeethu Joseph. In the film, Mohanlal played the lead. The film revolves around Georgekutty and his family, whose lives take a dramatic turn when a police officer's son mysteriously goes missing. The gripping narrative found resonance across languages, leading to remakes in several languages. Following the success, it was adapted in Kannada with V Ravichandran in the lead in 2014. In the same year, the Telugu version with Daggubati Venkatesh was out, followed by a Tamil version in 2015 starring Kamal Haasan. Ajay Devgn headlined the Hindi remake, which also gained immense popularity. Its success extended beyond India, with remakes produced in Sinhala and Chinese. In addition, Indonesian and Korean adaptations are currently in development. A sequel to Drishyam 1 was released in 2021 in Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu. The Hindi version of Drishyam 2 hit theatres in 2022. The third installment, Drishyam 3, was officially announced in February this year.
