
Delhi to conduct cloud seeding trials in September to curb air pollution
The Delhi government has allocated Rs 3.21 crore for this pilot project, which is being led by the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIT-Kanpur.The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted operational clearance for the trials. The aircraft has been equipped with cloud-seeding instrumentation, and its crew holds all the required licenses and certifications.Sirsa clarified that the aircraft will avoid prohibited areas and no aerial photography will be conducted during the operation in strict adherence to aviation safety norms."We have taken all the necessary permissions, and the aircraft is fully ready. The cloud seeding will now take place in the first and second weeks of September," the minister said, adding that "the instrumentation work on the aircraft has been completed by IIT-Kanpur, and we are fully prepared."The trials, which will be conducted using a Cessna 206-H aircraft (VT-IIT), will consist of five sorties over pollution-prone regions in north Delhi, including Rohini, Bawana, Alipur and Burari, as well as parts of adjoining Uttar Pradesh, such as Loni and Baghpat.During the sorties, the aircraft will fly below the cloud base and release hygroscopic particles - such as sodium chloride and other aerosols - into the clouds to stimulate precipitation. This weather modification technique is aimed at inducing artificial rain that could help wash out airborne pollutants.'This is a scientific intervention to combat air pollution. If successful, it will open a new avenue for Delhi to deal with hazardous air quality, especially during the post-monsoon period,' Sirsa said.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Delhi enjoys pleasant weather as IMD issues red alert for Kerala, Karnataka
Delhi continued to experience pleasant monsoon weather on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, and generally cloudy skies throughout the day. Surface winds were expected to blow at 15–25 kmph. The maximum temperature in the Capital is likely to remain between 35 degrees Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius, while the minimum may hover around 25–27 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels are expected to rise due to limited rainfall. No weather warnings have been issued for Delhi. Delhi's air quality remains in 'satisfactory' range Aided by the ongoing wet spell, Delhi's air quality continued to remain within the 'satisfactory' range. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 66 at 7 am on July 20. The 24-hour average AQI stood at 54 on July 19. Most parts of the National Capital Region also reported improved air quality, with AQIs in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad recorded at 72, 57 and 60, respectively. IMD issues red alert for Kerala and Karnataka The IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall for Kerala and coastal Karnataka on July 20, placing both states under a red alert. A red alert indicates the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall of 21 cm or more in isolated areas. In Kerala, Kannur and Kasaragod districts are on red alert, while an orange warning has been issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad. The IMD has issued a warning to fishermen along the Kerala and Karnataka coasts. Squally weather with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, is expected in these regions.

Eight chipsets designed by IIT students sent to fabs: IT Minister Vaishnaw
TIL Creatives Students at Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have designed 20 chipsets and eight of them have already been 'taped out' and sent to global foundries and the Semi-Conductor Laboratory in Mohali for fabrication, electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on at the 14th convocation ceremony of IIT-Hyderabad, Vaishnaw also reiterated that the first commercial-scale, made in India semiconductor chip will be built this year. IIT students designed the chipsets using tools provided under the government's India Semiconductor Mission. A chip is a single piece of semiconductor material, typically silicon, onto which an electronic circuit is etched while a chipset is a group of interconnected chips designed to work together to manage and direct the flow of data between the processor, memory, storage, and other peripherals in a computing device. Taping out means completion of the design process before sending to a manufacturing facility or foundry for fabrication. As of July 2025, India has six semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs) approved or under development. Founded in 1976, the government-owned Semi-Conductor Laboratory remains operational but only at legacy technology nodes. "The way we are going into the building of capital equipment and materials needed to build semiconductors, India will become one of the top-5 semiconductor nations in the coming years," Vaishnaw credited the spurt in semiconductor research to the government providing the latest electronic design automation tools (EDA) to 270 colleges and 70 startups. As many as 700 students at IIT-Hyderabad used these tools for a cumulative 300,000 hours over the past six months, the minister said the Centre's open-source artificial intelligence resources platform, AIKosh, now has 880 data sets and 200-plus models electronics exports have topped $40 billion, marking an eight-fold increase over the last 11 years.
