Mother suspects foul play in son's death during UTM training
PETALING JAYA : The mother of a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) student who died during a reserve officers' training unit exercise has filed a police report alleging possible foul play after discovering injuries on his body.
Ummu Haiman Bee Daulatgun said she was informed on July 28 that her son, Haris Samsudin, had died during a training session in Ulu Tiram, Johor. She received the call from a UTM lecturer at about 4.30pm.
However, upon viewing Haris's body at the hospital, she said she saw severe bruising, blood oozing from his nose and eyes, and wounds resembling gunshot injuries, Malaysiakini reported.
She said the injuries appeared inconsistent with the explanations provided to her.
'One person said he had a seizure during a shooting practice, while another told a family member he died in a fight,' she was reported as telling a press conference at the office of lawyer Naran Singh in Ipoh today.
Ummu also claimed that she was initially stopped from taking photos and was only allowed to view part of her son's body, but went ahead to document the injuries anyway.
Naran called for a full investigation and urged authorities to record statements from all trainees present during the exercise.
He also questioned the delay in the post-mortem which is pending.
Contacted later, Naran told FMT that UTM has yet to issue any official statement on the incident, five days after it occurred.
'We are still waiting for the full post-mortem report,' he said, when asked if the legal team planned to seek an independent forensic review.

Zara Qairina's mum files fresh police report in Sipatang after recalling bruises on daughter's back
PETALING JAYA, Aug 3 — The mother of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir has lodged a fresh police report after recalling signs of possible physical trauma on her daughter's body, nearly three weeks after her death in a Sabah school hostel. Noraidah Lamat made the report at the Sipitang police station today after remembering seeing bruises on her daughter's back while preparing the body for burial. Her lawyers, Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri, said the memory surfaced only recently when she was questioned about the state of Zara Qairina's body during the Islamic funeral washing ritual, which took place at Hospital Queen Elizabeth I on July 17. 'Our client did not include this important information in her earlier police reports because she had completely forgotten about it,' the lawyers said in a statement. 'She only recalled the bruises when we questioned her yesterday afternoon about the condition of her daughter's body during the washing ritual. 'She forgot about this fact as she had been overcome with grief since July 16 following what happened to her daughter.' The legal team said the newly recalled detail warranted a fresh investigation into Zara Qairina's death — despite Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stating yesterday that police had completed their probe and would be handing the investigation papers to the Attorney General's Chambers next week. 'Zara Qairina's grave must be exhumed immediately and a post-mortem must be conducted to determine the exact cause of death and whether any criminal elements were involved,' they said. Zara Qairina was found unconscious at around 4am on July 16 after allegedly falling from the third floor of her hostel at a religious boarding school in Papar. She died the following day at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu. The death of the 13-year-old has garnered national attention, with some — including family members — alleging a lack of transparency in the investigation. The case has triggered a wave of online claims, with some users linking political figures to the incident.

Post-mortem finds baby's skull fractured, repeated abuse by foster mum linked to crying, says acting KL police chief
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — Police have confirmed that a seven-month-old baby girl found dead at a home in Bandar Sri Permaisuri, Cheras, last Thursday died from multiple injuries across her body. Acting Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said a post-mortem revealed the infant had suffered a fractured skull. He said the injuries and death were the result of ongoing abuse over the past month. 'Investigations revealed that the injuries were caused after the baby cried incessantly, leading the foster mother to allegedly abuse her,' he told Utusan Malaysia. He added that the woman's husband works as a salesman, while she is a homemaker. 'Further investigations are ongoing to complete the case file,' he said. Earlier, the couple was arrested after the baby was found unconscious, with bluish skin and bruises on her body, in the living room of their home. A man lodged a police report at 9.34pm, claiming his adopted daughter had lost consciousness for unknown reasons. Following the report, police arrested the 38-year-old woman and her 50-year-old husband under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 (Act 611). The foster mother also tested positive for drugs. Initial investigations found that the baby had been under the woman's care since 18 June, after her biological mother returned to Indonesia.

Anwar vows no cover-up in Zara Qairina death investigation
KOTA KINABALU, Aug 3 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has vowed that no individual — regardless of rank or political ties — will be shielded from the investigation into the death of student Zara Qairina Mahathir. Anwar slammed those making baseless allegations, particularly against high-profile figures, without evidence. 'Regardless of whether they are Datuk Seri or Tan Sri, we will investigate if there is proof. We are a country of laws, not slander. 'If someone is guilty, they will be punished. But do not throw baseless accusations just because they are the child of a minister or a relative of a deputy prime minister or deputy chief minister,' he said during the National Farmers, Breeders and Fishermen's Day (HPPNK) 2025 event here. Anwar confirmed that police had completed their investigation and submitted the full report to the Attorney General's Chambers. He said he had contacted Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure that the probe was carried out thoroughly and without interference. 'The IGP informed me that 60 individuals have already been called to give their statements,' he added. He emphasised that no one would be spared if found guilty but warned the public not to fabricate accusations against political figures or their families. Anwar also disclosed that the attorney general confirmed receiving the report on Monday. He urged Malaysians to avoid politicising the case. The death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina at a religious boarding school in Papar has garnered national attention, with some — including family members — alleging a lack of transparency in the investigation. The case has triggered a wave of online claims, with some users linking political figures to the incident.
