Baker confident O'Invincible can rise to the top
The three-year-old was being set for the Scone carnival but Baker's racing manager Luke Hilton said a minor issue following her first trial in early April meant those plans had to be changed.
After a quick reset, she showed her readiness to return in the Broadsiding @ Darley Handicap (1000m) with a trial win two weeks ago.
'We did pencil in a stakes race at Scone for her, but she had a setback and we had to cool our jets with her,' Hilton said.
'She just needed a bit of time. Bjorn's been patient with her, and she's back in good order now and trialled well leading into this. This is a nice kick-off point for her and hopefully she can reach the levels we think she can.'
O'Invincible won on debut at Hawkesbury in early December and scored her second win in the stewards room at Wyong just before Christmas.
Hilton said the stable has always had a good opinion of the daughter of Viddora, a two-time Group 1 winner who also contested the 2018 TAB Everest, and is confident she'll give herself every chance.
'We've been really pleased with her, her work on Saturday was great and the trails have been very good,' he said. 'She's got good tactical speed and can put herself on speed, she's not a very big filly so carrying the weight is probably the biggest challenge for her.'
Stardeel is something of a work in progress for the Baker team and Hilton said if he's able to win the TAB Handicap (1150m) first-up it'll be a bonus.

Apprentice jockey Shannen Llewellyn impressed new boss Nathan Doyle with her winning ride on Aroha Stone and he didn't hesitate in keeping the combination together as they make their metropolitan debuts. Llewellyn had only been with Doyle's Newcastle stable for 10 days when she guided Aroha Stone to a near two length win from Cha Cha Cha over 1600m at Gosford. It was also just reward for Aroha Stone who was just pipped by stablemate Caltsar at Kembla the start prior. 'They did get all the favours. They went lickety-split up front and she just camped behind them,' said David Dyson, Doyle's racing manager. 'That was Shannen's (Llewellyn) first ride for the stable and she did everything right. 'She never went around a horse, quickly pouncing on the inside run when it come and they were too strong late. 'Each run this preparation has been good in its own right. It was just good to see her get the monkey off her back last start. 'Hopefully she can go on with it now.' Aroha Stone steps out in the TAB Handicap (1600m) where she has drawn ideally in barrier 5. 'Nathan has always thought she was a metropolitan class filly and she gets the chance to prove it this week,' Dyson said. 'Shannen started with us on June 9 - she is on loan to us for three months – and she is a very hard worker, very dedicated to what she does. 'Nathan had no hesitation in keeping her on this week. The minute we nominated Aroha Stone for this race, we told Shannen she had the ride. 'They have drawn to get the perfect run and Shannen's three kilo claim brings her into it quite well. 'If they get the breaks, lightning might strike twice.' Doyle loyalty also extends to Andrew Gibbons who sticks with Mornington Pier in the Hawaii Five Oh @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1600m). Gibbons had to work overtime to guide Mornington Pier to a first-up win at Newcastle when he came from last to run down Dalio and Tango Queen. 'He was first-up over 1400 metres and Andrew rode him every step of the way. He never travelled at any stage,' said Dyson. 'I spoke to Andrew about him a couple of days ago and he said 'it wasn't until the 150 metres where I thought I was going to win'. 'It was a really good effort to actually win. 'He came to us with the thinking he was a stayer but in his trials he looked a little sharp which is why we went to 1400 metres first-up instead of a mile. 'Everything he did prior to coming to us suggested he will get a trip and what he showed us the other day says the same thing. 'He will appreciate stepping up to the mile and will be even better as he gets out further.' Doyle also saddles up Mercy Me who makes her debut in the Asahi Super Dry Plate (1200m) for two-year-old fillies where she has barrier 5. The daughter of Hellbent has been very good in her trials including a last start win in her Wyong heat on June 16. After leading, she was given a shake up after straightening and extended nicely before pricking her ears near the line to beat Raging Force. 'She was asked to find the line by intent in that trial,' said Dyson. 'Nathan has a very good opinion of this filly. 'She is a very sharp filly and drawn to get a beautiful run in the race. 'Ash (Morgan) rode her in her trials and was keen to ride her on race day.' ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Trainer John Thompson couldn't have been happier with the way American Starlet performed first-up and gives her a great chance to break through. The daughter of American Pharoah was the victim of a wide barrier when resuming in the 1200m Midway Handicap at Rosehill on June 14. Having to go back to last in the field of 14, American Starlet was spotting the leaders a conservative eight lengths approaching the home turn before closing nicely between horses to finish just over two lengths off Motoscafo in fifth place. 'She ran really well first-up. She closed off very well and the jockey (Braith Nock) came back very happy,' said John Thompson. American Starlet has fared much better in the draw this week where she drew barrier 3 in the Castelvecchio @ Arrowfield Handicap (1400m) with Braith Nock again on board. 'This is another nice race for her. Up a little bit in distance suits, she's got a good draw and a good rider so she ticks a few boxes,' Thompson said. 'The good draw is the key. She is going to get a nice run from there. 'I would expect she is box seating and be prominent in the finish.' While American Starlet is one of the favourites in her race, Thompson saddles up a couple of long price runners in other races but feels they can run cheeky races on a likely heavy track. Welcome Gypsy has been a victim of outside barriers in both starts back from a spell forcing her to endure wide runs in Benchmark 78 races at Randwick. She has again drawn out in the Brave Smash @ Yarraman Park Handicap Benchmark 72 (1000m) where she has gate 9. 'She just can't draw a barrier,' Thompson said. 'This is a good drop in grade for her though so that should help. 'She can run a much improved race. 'She loves it wet, a Heavy 10 is her go. She's a swimmer. 'The draw could turn out to be not so bad because they will probably want to get to the middle of the track. She will go forward and make her own luck.' Stablemate Hellaine also has a wide gate to overcome in the Traffic Warden @ Darley Handicap (1200m) but will relish the wet track. 'She hasn't had much luck of late. Doing it a bit tough up front,' he said. 'We will ride her a bit quieter this week and I expect her to run alright.'

Via Sistina back … and she'll again blaze record-breaking trail in 2025-26 Australian racing season
Champion mare Via Sistina is back in training and will follow the same big-race trail she blazed so successfully last year when she returns to racing this spring carnival. Her trainer Chris Waller confirmed Via Sistina was being prepared to defend her Cox Plate title and is slated to resume racing in the Group 1 $1 million Winx Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 23. 'Via Sistina is likely to follow a similar path to the Cox Plate as last year,'' Waller said at the Rosehill meeting last Saturday. Yulong's super mare had two barrier trials prior to the Winx Stakes last year which she won from stablemates Zougotcha and Fangirl. Via Sistina then went to Melbourne for the rest of the spring carnival where she ran only fifth in the Makybe Diva Stakes before rebounding with a hat-trick of Group 1 wins in the Turnbull Stakes, Cox Plate and Champions Stakes. She then returned in autumn to win another three majors in the Verry Elleegant Stakes, Ranvet Stakes and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The 76th and final Group 1 race of the season, the Tatt's Tiara, was won by Tashi at Eagle Farm last Saturday, giving that mare her first stakes win, jockey Tom Sherry a breakthrough Group 1 win and trainer Peter Snowden 's 50th career major. But Via Sistina was clearly the headline act and dominant big race performer during 2024-25 with her seven Group 1 wins equalling the record set by all-time great Winx in 2018-19. Outstanding three-year-old fillies Lady Shenandoah and Treasurethe Moment were the only other horses to win more than two Group 1 races. They were both three-time winners at the top level with Via Sistina's stablemate Lady Shenandoah completing an unbeaten season including Group 1 wins in the Flight Stakes, Surround Stakes and Coolmore Classic, while Treasurethe Moment won more races than any other horse with eight consecutive wins including majors in the VRC Oaks, ATC Australian Oaks and Vinery Stud Stakes. Via Sistina and Lady Shenandoah helped Waller set a national record of 19 Group 1 wins for the season, eclipsing by one the trainer's previous standard set in 2018-19. Waller is the nation's leading Group 1 trainer for an unprecedented 13th consecutive season. The only other trainer to prepare more than four Group 1 winners this season was Ciaron Maher with 10 majors including Bella Nipotina 's The Everest win and the Caulfield Cup with Duke De Sessa. James McDonald, Via Sistina's regular rider, won a career-best 15 Group 1s – he also rode another six major race winners overseas – to be the nation's leading big-race jockey for the fifth season in succession. Treasurethe Moment's jockey Damian Lane had his best-ever season with eight Group 1 wins including the Golden Slipper on Marhoona.

Irish hoop Tom Sherry savours first Australian Group 1 triumph with Tashi in Tatt's Tiara at Eagle Farm
The unique racing journey of Tom Sherry took an incredible twist as he became the latest former Irishman to become a Group 1-winning jockey Down Under. Sherry scored the Group 1 Tatt's Tiara on Peter Snowden-trained mare Tashi to break into the Group 1 club, seven years after arriving in Australia without a job. SUBSCRIBE NOW! When Sherry arrived in Australia he had no immediate plans to work in racing, but lobbed at Bjorn Baker's Sydney stables after some time building fences. One thing led to another and he became Mark Newnham's star Sydney apprentice, blazing a trail which culminated in his first Group 1 at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Irish eyes were smiling at Eagle Farm, only seven months after fellow former Irish jockey Robbie Dolan won the Melbourne Cup. Sherry has come a long way since scoring his first career winner in Dundalk, Ireland, in 2017. 'It's crazy, it feels like a little bit of a weight has been lifted off my shoulders,' Sherry said. • What the jockeys said: 2025 Tattersall's Tiara 'Things like this don't really happen to people like me, I'm very grateful. 'I have worked really hard, trying to get to this moment. 'Winning a Group 1 is a big deal for me, for the lad from Ireland. 'It's been a long time coming, trying to win a Group 1, but the stars aligned today. 'We have had a tough year but when stuff like this happens, it makes it all worthwhile. 'Mark Newnham was a massive figure in my life, a father figure, and going from being an apprentice to a senior jockey was a huge thing for me. 'There is a saying that when mares are in form, they keep producing, and that's exactly what has happened this campaign. 'Tashi has always been super consistent.' Picture: Trackside Photography Tashi started at $7.50 in the Tatt's Tiara after being agonisingly close to victories in her previous three races, finishing runner-up in each. But she had the killer punch on Saturday, roaring home over Rob Heathcote's Queensland galloper Abounding ($19) and Chris Waller's mare Olentia ($31). Tony Gollan's well-backed favourite Floozie ($3.20) had her chance but finished fifth, the first time she has been beaten in five runs for Gollan. Snowden was emotional post-race, with Tashi raced by the Altomonte family which had patriarch George Altomonte pass away last year. 'I'm so proud of this mare and also of Tommy Sherry who delivered an absolute peach,' Snowden said. 'I'm thrilled for Tom, he came up here yesterday to get ready for this race so I knew he wouldn't be late today. 'But I think George Altomonte rode this mare from above today.'
