I created 'Ginny & Georgia.' I wrote this character with 'pieces of me.'
When Sarah Lampert created Ginny & Georgia, she wanted to tell a story that reflected the raw and often messy truths of life. It's part of what has made the Netflix dramedy such a hit — viewers can see parts of themselves in the show's complex characters.
The third season, which premiered on June 5, debuted at No. 1 on the U.S. charts with 17.6 million viewers — in just its first four days — with fans eager to see the aftermath of Georgia Miller's (Brianne Howey) arrest for murder on her own wedding day. All three seasons of the series have been on Netflix's top 10 list for English TV for three weeks and running.
Ginny & Georgia centers on the mother-daughter relationship between teenage Ginny and her free-spirited, secretive matriarch, Georgia, as they settle into a new town and face unexpected challenges. Central to the show is mental health.
Growing up, Lampert never understood certain compulsions and behaviors that affected her life. It wasn't until her 30s, when she was diagnosed with ADHD and OCD, that everything clicked. This revelation would later influence the character of Ginny's best friend Maxine Baker, whose behaviors, struggles and dialogue have pieces of Lampert's own experiences. Ginny and Maxine, aka Max, make up half of their friend group, nicknamed "MANG," along with characters Abby and Norah.
Maxine is a dynamic and complex character, known for her energetic, emotional and vulnerable nature. She often brings humor and heart to the series, but beneath her vibrant personality lies a struggle with mental health and a search for self-identity.
The character of Maxine naturally holds a special place for the creator, writer and executive producer. Still, she was conscious of not diagnosing Maxine onscreen this season.
Below, Lampert opens up about giving a voice to her personal journey through Max and how actress Sara Waisglass brought the character to life.
Coming out of the release of Season 3 of Ginny & Georgia, the comment I'm seeing the most online is 'I relate to Maxine!'
I've watched passionate TikToks about how deeply everyone feels for the character, the questions they have about her actions and the empathy they hold for her.
'Why did MANG leave her out?'
'I've never related to a character more!'
'She was trying to help!'
'Maxine, get behind me! My poor little glass child baby!'
Maxine's pain isn't obvious. She's not brooding or glum. She's energetic. She's the star of the musical. She is happiest when others are happy. She loves the spotlight but is wildly generous about sharing it. Maxine is constantly thinking about everyone else.
It is exhausting to be Maxine.
She always has to be OK. That's the role she's been cast in, especially as a twin to her brother Marcus. When she starts to not be OK, when she cracks, no one sees it because she's gotten too good at hiding it. Even when she tries to share her feelings, no one sees she's drowning.
The version of depression that we're more used to seeing onscreen is represented in Marcus, portrayed so achingly and hauntingly beautifully by Felix Mallard. But in a show where the theme is "everyone's fighting a battle you can't see" — what battle is Maxine fighting, and is it so dissimilar from Marcus's, or is it just packaged differently?
By entering Maxine's head in Season 3, the writers were able to give context to some of her over-the-top reactions from Season 2, revealing her thought process in a way that showed the chaos and heart that make up the character's inner world.
We also had the gift that is Sara Waisglass, who has the ability to make you laugh and cry in the same sentence. Sara was very brave in Season 2 in allowing Maxine to be so messy, to bring the character to places that we knew would be unpopular with the audience because she had to be flawed. She had to be human.
Does Maxine overreact to Ginny and Marcus's relationship? I think so. Is that something I would do at 16? Absolutely. She makes sense to me, her rejection sensitivity, the larger-than-life emotions, the dramatics. Of all the characters on the show, Maxine is the one I relate to the most.
I was in my 30s when I was diagnosed with ADHD and OCD. Suddenly, so many aspects of my life clicked and made so much sense. I realized that this wasn't unique to me. So many people — especially women — aren't diagnosed until later in life. Women's mental health, like women's physical health, is criminally overlooked.
And to be honest, I'm not interested in diagnosing Maxine. She's young. She has a lot of growing up to do. She's got pieces of me, but she's not me. She's a combined effort of the other brilliant writers who work on this show, and of the special sauce of Sara Waisglass, who infuses Max with her own spin so that everything feels so very Max.
I knew that it would mean a lot to depict Maxine's inner thought process onscreen. If we could get it right, I knew it would be powerful and others could connect to it. Max would make sense to them.
When Season 3 was released on Netflix June 5, the response was shocking because Maxine is all of us. Everyone felt for her. Everyone felt they were her. We've all gone through feelings of being too much, of being left out, of needing to be OK when other people weren't. The universality of that is beautiful to me.
I hope that if the show does anything, it makes people feel less alone. With Maxine's story specifically, I hope that it helps people pay attention to the friend who they don't think needs help, the friend that's laughing on the outside. Inside, they just might be hiding something deeper.
To those people who do feel like Maxine, I hope you see how you're not alone and how seen you really are. That's why it was so important to me to put the inside of Maxine's head onscreen, for all the Max's out there.

‘Squid Game' Season 3: Reviews warn of a divisive WTF sprint to the finish line
Let the games... end! Four years after it took the world by storm, Squid Game is throwing in the towel. The South Korean sensation just dropped its third and final season on Netflix, bringing the story of debtor-turned-liberator Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) to a conclusion. "It's a mixture of everything you can imagine. It's more brutal, more violent. It'sdarker, and even funnier," show creator told Gold Derby last month. "If I have to pick one season out of all three [as] my favorite, the best season is going to be Season 3." Opinions on the final six episodes — particularly the big denouement — are all over the map. Take Rebecca Nicholson writing in The Guardian that the series ends on a "moment so WTF and genuinely surprising that I bet my editor a serious amount of money she wouldn't be able to guess what happens." "Such reckless gambling is the sort of behaviour that would land me in Squid Game in the first place, so it just shows that nobody here has learned any lessons from it whatsoever," she continues. "The final two episodes have a nicely grand and operatic feel to them, and ultimately, Squid Game does its job. But it leaves the impression, too, that it has become a more traditional action-thriller than it once was." But Indiewire's Ben Travers is more on board with where the series goes in its grand finale. "While the general vibes are dour (there's very little room left for humor), Squid Game delivers enough closure to satiate anyone still perched on the edge of their seat, and its brief, fleeting bursts of light frame the darkness with the starkest truths." Time's Judy Berman is similarly ready to award a medal to the show's final sprint, singling out the second episode, "The Starry Night," for particular praise. "It brings me no pleasure to report that the third and thankfully last of Squid Game seasons only confirms that we, like Gi-hun should've left that cursed island behind for good after his first victory," she writes, later adding: "By the time Squid Game finally crawls over the finish line, there's no sense of the triumph you might get from completing a really good story — only of relief that this entire grueling experience is finally over." Look no further than Rotten Tomatoes to get a sense of the polarizing nature of Season 3: The aggregated critical reviews have resulted in a strong score of 88 percent but, the users "Popcornmeter" clocks in with a woeful 39 percent, indicating fans have not responded well. As Vulture's Roxana Hadadi puts it, Squid Game probably should have remained a "one-season wonder," instead of coming back for more. "There's an increasing repetition to how Squid Game plays out, a rehashing of the original idea instead of a deepening of it," she notes. "The payoff is in the metatext, in how Squid Game aimed its contempt outward through the existential dilemma of its own popularity." Jake Paul drops $39 million on Georgia's iconic Southlands ranch
Professional boxer, social media influencer and content creator Jake Paul has bought the sprawling Southlands property just south of Bainbridge, Georgia, for $39 million. Paul, during an interview on the "The Iced Coffee Hour" podcast in mid-June, said he's been wanting to purchase a ranch for the last 15 years, according to 'It's kind of been my dream and why I work so hard," said Paul. He added the 5,746-acre estate was '… a little bit bigger than what I wanted, but when I got there, I was like, 'I have to buy this.' ' Paul, 28, is known for his brash commentary on YouTube and other social media platforms and co-stars alongside his brother, Logan Paul, in "Paul American," a reality show that premiered in March 2025 and offers a peek into their family life outside of the boxing and wrestling ring. The 5,653-acre property surrounds the eastern shore of Lake Seminole, just above the Florida panhandle, and was listed in October 2024 for $42.5 million. It features a "sport huntsman's paradise with an abundance of bobwhite wild quail, turkey and whitetail deer. It also includes a 20-acre fishing pond and a 30-acre duck pond," as previously reported in the Tallahassee Democrat, part of the USA TODAY Network. Jon Kohler, an expert in large plantation properties in the southeast, said there are few investments that can build "long-term wealth like owning a property such as Southlands." "While we can see the financial appreciation, what only the seller can measure is the immense intrinsic value – the lifestyle, the experiences, the memories. That's the most important kind of wealth. And that's what Southlands will create for Jake, his family, and his friends," said Kohler, in a statement. In a Facebook post announcing the purchase, Kohler described the property as "one of America's most iconic sporting properties." "From its roots with Herbert Stoddard, a legacy dating back to 1937, to its years as International Paper's flagship property, Southlands has long been a crown jewel of American land stewardship – and with Jake Paul's passion and commitment to conservation, its future has never been brighter," the post said. 'Squid Game' 14 'Squid Game.' No Ju-han/Netflix Season 3 of the highly anticipated Korean drama series 'Squid Game' is back on Netflix, six months after its sophomore season aired in December. Picking up right where the show left off, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) will continue his mission to stop the deadly games. But the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) has his own dangerous agenda. The new season is also set to be the last, and in December, director and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told USA Today about the season 2 finale: 'Gi-hun has a huge sense of loss, defeat and guilt weighing on him. 'When he is just filled with complete, utter loss and guilt after all of his attempts (to stop the games) fail, I thought that was the adequate ending to give closure to the second season.' 'My preference was three seasons, but I also wanted to allow the storytelling room in case I felt like we needed more time,' Han, 44, told Entertainment Weekly in May. Angus Pigott Season 2 of the critically-acclaimed series is back in full swing. 'The Buccaneers' follows young American women who were sent to London to secure husbands and titles in the 1870s. Fans are in store for some major guest appearances, including 'Gossip Girl' alum Leighton Meester. Sharing a reel on Instagram in October, the streaming service wrote, 'Darlings, welcome Leighton Meester to The Buccaneers Season 2.' Meanwhile, the series creator Katherine Jakeways released a heartwarming statement ahead of the Season 2 premiere. The Emmy award-winning series is back for its fourth season, starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. Season 3 ended last June with the cliffhanger that saw Sydney (Edebiri) having a panic attack trying to figure out if she should step away from the Chicago restaurant for good. Hulu dropped a new trailer last month that showed the beloved kitchen staff dealing with food critics, their toxic work environment and trying to keep the restaurant afloat despite financial struggles. Airing now on Hulu. 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia' 14 'It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.' The sun is about to shine a little brighter soon. Season 17 of the sitcom, which has been on the air since 2005, is around the corner, starring the core group: Rob McElhenney as Mac, Glenn Howerton as Dennis, Charlie Day as Charlie, Kaitlin Olson as Dee and Danny DeVito as Frank. This season, 'It's Always Sunny' will also debut the second part of its crossover episode with 'Abbott Elementary.' In October, Lisa Anna Walter exclusively told The Post what viewers are in store for. 'I can't wait,' she said at Warner Brothers' Fall TV Season Celebration. 'I think it's going to be unhinged. Cena, 48, said of the upcoming season: 'This time around, everybody looked at it through a different lens, knowing how much the audience enjoyed the first one. '[We knew] this is going to be a cornerstone of the show, so let's dive in.
