Norris closes gap to Piastri with victory in Austria
Lando Norris won the Austrian Grand Prix from pole position in a McLaren one-two on Sunday after fending off championship-leading teammate Oscar Piastri.
The Briton's third victory of the season cut Australian Piastri's Formula One lead from 22 to 15 points after 11 of 24 rounds, with the two McLaren drivers increasingly in a battle of their own.
Charles Leclerc completed the podium for Ferrari with teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth and George Russell fifth for Mercedes.
Red Bull's four-times world champion Max Verstappen suffered his first retirement of the season, in his team's home race, after a first lap collision with Mercedes' Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli.

Picture: Grant Pitcher/Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus is expected to ring the changes for the first Test of the incoming series against Italy in Pretoria this weekend as he aims to spread game time across the whole squad over the coming weeks. The Boks got their season off to a cracking start with a 54-7 thumping of the Barbarians in their one-off non-Test in Cape Town on Saturday, and now turn their attention to their next three games against Italy and Georgia. Heading into the Baabaas match the Boks only made part of their squad available, leaving out most of the players who featured in various franchise finals late in the club season. But they will now have the full group of 46 players available for the incoming series, and might possibly even add a few extra players to the group for their last game against Georgia in Mbombela. Speaking after the Baabaas romp, Erasmus explained that the players who will be facing Italy in the matches in Pretoria and Gqeberha already knew the team lineups. 'The guys will know tomorrow (Sunday) night who's playing Italy 'one' and 'two'. They've got a fairly good idea already. The guys who played the Barbarians knew two weeks ago, so they had two weeks of training together,' said Erasmus. 'That's always a little bit of a caveat. If things don't go according to plan, Italy 'two' can always change. But we do know who the core of the team will be. So we definitely know who's in the mix for Italy 'one'.' Japan players The Japan-based players are expected to get some more game time, while senior players like captain Siya Kolisi, who was pulled out of the Baabaas game with a stiff neck on Friday, Eben Etzebeth, Bongi Mbonambi, Handre Pollard and Willie le Roux could all be in line to play this weekend. It will be interesting to see if any the four uncapped players who featured against the Baabaas, namely Vincent Tshituka, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Neethling Fouche and Marnus van der Merwe, will receive their official first caps, while the Bulls players, such as Wilco Louw and Ruan Nortje, and Thomas du Toit (Bath) will also be in the mix. Erasmus also confirmed that star loose forward Pieter-Steph du Toit, who has been out injured since undergoing shoulder surgery in November last year, would likely be available for selection for the second Italian game. 'We won't get carried away with this performance (against the Baabaas). Certainly some guys showed us that they can do it at this level, but we'll layer them in to make sure there's a balance,' explained Erasmus. 'I think guys like Damian (de Allende), Jesse (Kriel) are a bit undercooked. Kurt-Lee (Arendse) hasn't really played in a lot of matches either in Japan and didn't come back to the Bulls. 'So we'll try to strike a balance so that when we're done with Georgia, we've got a group of 45 or 50 (players) that got some game time.'

Bernie Ecclestone makes first ever F1 podium appearance at age 94
Bernie Ecclestone, the former Formula One supremo who rarely stayed to watch races beyond halfway when he was in charge, made his first grand prix podium appearance at the age of 94 in Austria on Sunday. The Briton was present at the Red Bull Ring to hand out a medal on behalf of the president of the governing FIA Mohammed Ben Sulayem to McLaren's race winner Lando Norris. Norris hopped off the top step of the podium so that he would be standing at the same level as his diminutive compatriot. 'I think it's nice that the president gives a personal congratulations to the winning competitor,' said Ecclestone, who ran the commercial side of the sport for about 40 years until being ousted in 2017. 'As he could not attend the race here in Austria, he asked me to present his medal for him which I am pleased and honoured to do. 'It was also great to be there as, though it might seem strange, this was the first time in almost 70 years in this sport that I've been on the podium.' Norris won Formula One's 1,136th championship grand prix and Ecclestone attended the first at Silverstone in 1950. He once said he left races soon after the start because by then his business was done. The President's Medal was first presented to Red Bull's Max Verstappen at the season-ending 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and each one carries the race number and highlights the event's history.

Stella applauds Norris' grit after Canada disappointment
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella praised Lando Norris' character as the Briton bounced back from a collision and race retirement in Canada to lead home a McLaren one-two at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday. The Italian said Norris still "to polish a few things" to become the finished article in a Formula One season turning into a two-horse drivers' title chase with team mate Oscar Piastri. Norris had to fend off the Australian to set up Sunday's victory two weeks after his clash with his team mate forced him out in Montreal. "The outcome (in Canada) was unfortunate because Lando could not finish the race. That was simply a misjudgment. The way Lando handled that, I think showed the character," said Stella. "The speed is there. Lando pole position in Monaco. He was the faster car in Canada, pole position in Austria. "We have to polish a few things in executions and results ,which is what Lando demonstrated today. Very proud of Lando, very proud of how everyone handled the situation in Canada and the fact we end up united and stronger." The runaway constructors' championship leaders avoided another on-track accident, with Piastri delivering a mea culpa over team radio after the chequered flag after a near collision. "There was only one situation where the two cars ended up a little too close and that was in turn four when Oscar locked up and he ended up very close to Lando," said Stella. "We gave Oscar the feedback and I want to acknowledge I am proud of him. As soon as he crossed the finish line he went on the radio and he said sorry for the situation in turn four. "I am so refreshed by how the team reviewed the situation in Canada. We have come out stronger and more united." Norris' win cut the gap with Piastri at the top of the drivers' standings to 15 points ahead of a home British race next weekend. Norris, seven times a race winner, has yet to take back-to-back wins in the same F1 season, but Stella expects him to rectify that. "In terms of Lando being able to do so, yes, of course," he said. "There is absolutely no reason why not. The talent, the quality, the race craft and even the trajectory Lando is in.
