Dog rescues 2-year-old who wandered 7 miles from home in Arizona
The family of 2-year-old Boden Allen reported him missing on Monday after he wandered away in Seligman, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Deputies and more than 40 search-and-rescue personnel from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the neighboring Coconino County Sheriff's Office and other agencies sprang into action.
They searched through the night for the toddler clad in a tank top and pajama pants, scouring rough high-desert terrain from the air and on the ground. A rescue helicopter's pilot spotted two mountain lions along the way.
'After 16 hours of searching, a rancher approximately 7 miles away reported that a young child had walked onto his property,' the sheriff's office said. 'Upon arrival at the ranch, deputies confirmed this was indeed the missing boy.'
Buford, an Anatolian Pyrenees, had come to the rescue, finding the child on his nightly patrol for coyotes and other wildlife, rancher Scotty Dunton told the sheriff's office. He was heading out to town the next morning when he saw Buford sitting at the end of his driveway with the boy.
'I look up and the little kid's standing there with my dog,' Dunton said. 'It was a relief knowing that he was alive, so I was ecstatic that he was OK and that my dog found him.'
Dunton said he figured Boden most likely followed the road along the power line running between his house and the boy's, traversing 'three big mountain ranges between here and his house, and big valleys.'
Buford, who 'loves kids,' must have encountered the tot in a nearby horse pasture and guided him home, because 'that's what he does,' Dunton added, telling KTVK that the canine hero had earned himself a steak dinner.
'There was a thousand ways for that to go really, really bad and one good way, and luckily it turned out to be the good way,' he told KPNX.
The Yavapai Sheriff's Office thanked everyone who had helped search, 'and of course, Buford the dog, who stayed with the boy and brought him to safety.'

Hiker on trip with her dad survives 3 days after falling off ‘Edge of the World'
An Arizona woman fell into a canyon known as the 'Edge of the World' and managed to survive three day in the desert before she was rescued. Janelle Banda, 32, was on a father-daughter camping trip when she went for a walk and took a misstep that dropped her 400 feet into a steep canyon in Sedona, Arizona. For two and a half days, Banda suffered through the heat and cold as her family was 'very much mentally preparing for the worst,' her loved ones told The Arizona Republic. Advertisement Janelle Banda took a misstep and fell into a 400 foot canyon during a hike with her father. But Banda was ultimately saved by the Pima County sheriff's office, which airlifted her by helicopter on June 16. Her sister, Sarah Banda, 29, called the rescue 'nothing short of a miracle,' adding that she has 'an overwhelming amount of relief, joy.' Advertisement The sisters 'always had a love for the outdoors' and were seasoned hikers, but Janelle Banda's latest trip was her first trek at the Edge of the World — a popular beauty spot marked by towering rock formations and treacherous cliffs She and her father started their trip on June 11, Janelle Banda, an Etsy store owner, and her father started their trip on June 11. Coconino County Sheriff's Office via Storyful Janelle Banda made it out with two sprained ankles, cuts, bruising and some scrapes that resembled road burn. She was also extremely dehydrated when she was found. She spent one night in the hospital and is now resting with her parents, Sarah Banda said. 'She can't really move,' said Sarah Banda. 'She's in a lot of pain.' Advertisement 'There's obviously the mental toll of … the trauma of not just falling but being in the canyon alone,' she said. 'That's a different battle that she'll have to deal with.'

2 arrests in hit-and-run at Southern California 'No Kings' protest
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Two people were arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash at a weekend 'No Kings' protest in Southern California that left a 21-year-old demonstrator seriously injured, authorities said. The SUV veered toward marchers Saturday night in Riverside, east of Los Angeles, and struck the woman, according to investigators. She remained hospitalized in critical condition, the Riverside Police Department said in a statement Tuesday. After a search aided by tips from the public, police arrested the suspected driver, a 58-year-old Riverside man, on Monday, the police statement said. He could face charges including assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run causing injury. Also arrested was a 39-year-old Riverside woman suspected of taking the SUV into an unincorporated area of the Mojave Desert and 'intentionally destroying and concealing evidence,' the statement said. She could face charges including accessory after the fact and destruction of evidence. 'No Kings' protests swept across the country on Saturday, and organizers said millions rallied against what they described as President Donald Trump's authoritarian tendencies. Confrontations were largely isolated. In Utah, a demonstrator was inadvertently fatally shot by a 'safety volunteer' who was trying to stop an alleged gunman at the rally in Salt Lake City, according to police and organizers. Outside the Arizona statehouse, a social media video showed protesters Saturday jeering at and then skirmishing with a masked man, who eventually pulled out a handgun, causing the crowd to scatter. Another video showed Arizona Department of Public Safety officers taking the man into custody.
