Dog rescues 2-year-old who wandered 7 miles from home in Arizona
The family of 2-year-old Boden Allen reported him missing on Monday after he wandered away in Seligman, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
Deputies and more than 40 search-and-rescue personnel from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the neighboring Coconino County Sheriff's Office and other agencies sprang into action.
They searched through the night for the toddler clad in a tank top and pajama pants, scouring rough high-desert terrain from the air and on the ground. A rescue helicopter's pilot spotted two mountain lions along the way.
'After 16 hours of searching, a rancher approximately 7 miles away reported that a young child had walked onto his property,' the sheriff's office said. 'Upon arrival at the ranch, deputies confirmed this was indeed the missing boy.'
Buford, an Anatolian Pyrenees, had come to the rescue, finding the child on his nightly patrol for coyotes and other wildlife, rancher Scotty Dunton told the sheriff's office. He was heading out to town the next morning when he saw Buford sitting at the end of his driveway with the boy.
'I look up and the little kid's standing there with my dog,' Dunton said. 'It was a relief knowing that he was alive, so I was ecstatic that he was OK and that my dog found him.'
Dunton said he figured Boden most likely followed the road along the power line running between his house and the boy's, traversing 'three big mountain ranges between here and his house, and big valleys.'
Buford, who 'loves kids,' must have encountered the tot in a nearby horse pasture and guided him home, because 'that's what he does,' Dunton added, telling KTVK that the canine hero had earned himself a steak dinner.
'There was a thousand ways for that to go really, really bad and one good way, and luckily it turned out to be the good way,' he told KPNX.
The Yavapai Sheriff's Office thanked everyone who had helped search, 'and of course, Buford the dog, who stayed with the boy and brought him to safety.'

UPDATE (7:00 p.m.): A popular barbecue restaurant in downtown Foley is now under a federal investigation for alleged illicit money laundering, human smuggling, and labor exploitation. Police and federal agents surrounded the Colt Grill off of West Laurel Avenue and Alston Street in Downtown Foley around 12:45 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. This restaurant is one of several locations tied to Colt Grill, a barbecue chain based in Arizona. The chain is now the focus of a complex criminal investigation, according to deputies with the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office in Arizona. They said the allegations of money laundering and labor exploitation are tied to all locations of the Colt Grill. Each restaurant location was raided by federal agents on Tuesday. According to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, agents executed 28 federal search warrants and 4 federal arrest warrants across the two states. 'Today's planned enforcement activity resulted in the arrest of four targets who are alleged to have participated in money laundering among other charges,' a post from the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said. 'Over 20 immigration related arrests also took place, but that number has not been finalized as interviews are ongoing.' It is unclear if any of these arrests occurred in Foley. The post explains this operation is the result of a three-year long federal investigation. During the raid in Foley, WKRG News 5 did not see anyone being arrested or led away from the building. Agents were seen removing several boxes and files from the restaurant. Agents with Homeland Security said this is a part of an ongoing federal investigation with the Gulf of America Homeland Security Task Force and more developments and charges could be coming. 2 arrests in hit-and-run at Southern California 'No Kings' protest
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Two people were arrested in connection with a hit-and-run crash at a weekend 'No Kings' protest in Southern California that left a 21-year-old demonstrator seriously injured, authorities said. The SUV veered toward marchers Saturday night in Riverside, east of Los Angeles, and struck the woman, according to investigators. She remained hospitalized in critical condition, the Riverside Police Department said in a statement Tuesday. After a search aided by tips from the public, police arrested the suspected driver, a 58-year-old Riverside man, on Monday, the police statement said. He could face charges including assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run causing injury. Also arrested was a 39-year-old Riverside woman suspected of taking the SUV into an unincorporated area of the Mojave Desert and 'intentionally destroying and concealing evidence,' the statement said. She could face charges including accessory after the fact and destruction of evidence.
