George Galloway visits Moscow after picking up Hamas award

Yahoo09-05-2025

George Galloway has appeared in Moscow for Vladimir Putin's Victory Day celebrations, days after flying to Iran to collect an award named after a dead Hamas leader.
The leader of the hard-Left Workers Party of Britain travelled to Tehran this week to collect an award in honour of Ismail Haniyeh, the assassinated political leader of Hamas, whom the former MP praised as a 'martyr'.
He boasted during the visit that his most 'treasured' possession was Haniyeh's passport.
Mr Galloway, 70, then travelled to Russia, where he witnessed Putin's military show of strength, which he said was 'moving, emotional, inspiring, humbling'.
He was given the special Martyr Ismail Haniyeh award at a media festival in the Iranian capital.
Haniyeh was the political leader of the terror group at the time of the October 7 attacks on Israel. The International Criminal Court (ICC) intended to apply for a warrant for his arrest for war crimes and crimes against humanity, but the proceedings were dropped following Haniyeh's assassination in Tehran, which has been blamed on Israel.
Elected as the head of Hamas's political bureau in 2017, Haniyeh was accused by Karim Khan, the ICC prosecutor, of being 'criminally responsible for the killing of hundreds of Israeli civilians in attacks perpetrated by Hamas, in particular its military wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, and other armed groups on 7 October 2023'.
At the ceremony, Mr Galloway said in his acceptance speech, captured on video and posted online: 'I am honoured to receive this award. I actually hold in my safe the passport of the martyr Ismail Haniyeh because when we arrived with one of our convoys to break the siege on Gaza [in 2009], he had promised me a Palestinian passport but they had run out of Palestinian passports. So he gave me his own personal passport and it is one of my most treasured possessions.'

Mr Galloway went on to thank the Iranian leadership 'for their steadfastness in support of the Palestinian people', adding: 'The truth is when Palestine is finally free, Iran will be able to take its place in the panoply of heroes who made it possible.'
He was presented with the award at the Iranian state media festival in recognition 'of his outspoken defence of Palestine'.
On Friday, Mr Galloway appeared in Moscow, posting a picture of himself on X in Red Square with his fourth wife Putri Gayatri Pertiwi, who is 30 years his junior. Included with the photograph was the caption, 'moving, emotional, inspiring, humbling'.
The Russian president's Victory Day parade has been condemned for using the 80th anniversary VE Day to justify his ongoing invasion of Ukraine. It was attended by more than 20 foreign leaders, including Xi Jinping of China, and with troop contingents from Egypt and Burkina Faso.
One legal expert said that although Hamas was a proscribed terrorist organisation in the UK, Mr Galloway's praise for Haniyeh, one of its senior leaders, was not in breach of terrorism laws.
But the timing of the visit is also particularly awkward with tensions heightened between Iran and the UK following the arrests last Saturday of four Iranian nationals over an alleged plot to attack Israel's embassy in London.

Mr Galloway picked up his award on May 5, two days after counter-terrorism police arrested the alleged Iranian terrorist cell at four locations in the UK.
Stephen Brisley, from Bridgend in South Wales, whose sister Lianne Sharabi and two nieces Yahel, 13, and Noiya, 16, were killed on Kibbutz Be'eri on October 7, said: 'It's deeply disturbing to see George Galloway praising a former leader of Hamas. This is a cruel blow to the grieving families of those murdered, missing, or held hostage by Hamas.'
Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: 'George Galloway's behaviour is appalling. Hamas is a banned terrorist organisation responsible for repressing its citizens in Gaza and murdering innocent civilians. It is despicable that Galloway has expressed admiration for a senior member of their leadership and that he has travelled to Iran, a state hostile to the West, to do so.
'The fact he has then topped it off with a visit to Vladimir Putin's Russia, another murderous regime, says all you need to know about George Galloway.'
Mr Galloway was unavailable for comment.
There is no suggestion that Mr Galloway supports Hamas's terrorist activities. In a debate at Oxford University in 2012, he previously said: 'I don't even like Hamas. I would never have voted for Hamas.'
Mr Galloway is due to host a talk show from Moscow on Sunday evening which will be broadcast on X and other social media platforms.

Zohran Mamdani's ‘chilling' call for ‘seizing the means of production' draws outrage from communist refugees: ‘Dangerous and scary'

Several communist refugees and New York pols expressed outrage Monday after a clip resurfaced of presumptive Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani noting that one of his goals is 'seizing the means of production.' 'After [the] Red October Socialist Revolution in 1917, Bolsheviks seized means of production, jailed or killed business owners, eliminated freedoms & took over private farms & food stores,' former Brooklyn Councilman and communist refugee Ari Kagan wrote on X. 'I would never imagine NYC would consider this failed & dangerous government model.' 3 Mamdani noted the unpopularity of 'seizing the means of production' in remarks at the 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference, but said the cause should still be promoted. Stephen Yang Kagan, a Belarus native who grew up under Soviet-style communism, further told The Post that the clip of Mamdani grinning as he parrots communist godfather Karl Marx's marching orders is 'chilling.' 'It's very chilling to hear that,' the former council member said. 'It's dangerous and scary. A majority of New Yorkers have to reject this man.' 'I remember government-run stores in Minsk. There were long lines,' Kagan recalled. Mamdani is a double whammy for Kagan, who is Jewish. 'He's a Hamas sympathizer,' the ex-councilman declared. In the resurfaced clip – from a 2021 Young Democratic Socialists of America conference – Mamdani argues that the 'purpose' of 'this entire project' is 'not simply to raise class consciousness, but to win socialism' and elect leaders who are 'unapologetic about our socialism.' The mayoral candidate, a self-described Democratic Socialist, notes that certain issues socialists 'firmly believe in,' such as boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel and 'the end goal of seizing the means of production' are unpopular at the moment but should still be championed. 'It is critical to the way that we organize, the way that we set up our, you know, set up our work and our priorities that we do not leave any one issue for the other; that we do not meet a moment and only look at what people are ready for, but that we are doing both of these things in tandem, because it is critical for us to both meet people where they're at and to also organize for what is correct and for what is right, and to ensure that over time we can bring people to that issue,' Mamdani said. 3 Kagan was one of several communist refugees who slammed Mamdani over the resurfaced clip Monday. Gabriella Bass Last week, after Mamdani's stunning upset in New York's Democratic mayoral primary, President Trump described the presumptive nominee as a '100% Communist Lunatic.' Mamdani has insisted that he is not a communist. 'No, I am not,' he responded, when asked directly by NBC's Kristen Welker on 'Meet the Press' on Sunday. 'I call myself a democratic socialist, in many ways, inspired by the words of [Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.] from decades ago, who said, 'Call it democracy or call it democratic socialism: There has to be a better distribution of wealth for all of God's children in this country,'' Mamdani added. 3 Mamdani claims he is not a communist. Paul Martinka Brooklyn Councilwoman Inna Vernikov, a native of former Soviet-controlled Ukraine, argued that Mamdani was being deceptive about his true politics. 'This is exactly why Zohran's whole song-and-dance about `democratic socialism' somehow being different from communism is pure deception,' Vernikov argued, when asked about the resurfaced clip. 'Those of us who grew up under communism know this all too well. Our home countries were destroyed by ideas that came dressed in pleasant, persuasive packaging.' 'New Yorkers need to wake up before it's too late.' Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), whose mother fled the communist regime installed in Cuba by late dictator Fidel Castro, said the clip of Mamdani is the 'scariest thing' she's heard the controversial mayoral candidate mutter. 'Of all his left-wing rhetoric, this is the scariest thing Mamdani has said and it's straight out of Karl Marx's Communist playbook,' Malliotakis said. 'My mother fled a country that `seized the means of production' and now my relatives have no medicine, no property and rationed rice and beans in Cuba,' the 11th District rep added. 'Venezuela also `seized it means of production' and a quarter of its population fled and those who remain are living in poverty and misery.' 'What I really don't understand is why immigrants would come to this country if they hate our form of government and economy so much,' Malliotakis continued. 'His family could've chosen any other country in the world including Cuba or Venezuela if they love socialism and communism so much.' Queens Councilwoman Vickie Paladino similarly argued that Mamdani's comments were 'straight out of the Communist Manifesto.' 'There's no way to spin that. He's obviously a full-blown communist, and we cannot have someone like this in charge of America's largest and most important economic center,' Paladino argued. 'Between this and everything else we know about him, it's obvious that Zohran doesn't hold a single identifiable American value.' 'Clearly he lied on his immigration application, and he has no business being here. It's time for this experiment to end. It's time to review Zohran's naturalization status. And it may be time to look seriously at the Communist Control Act again,' she warned. The Post has reached out to Mamdani's campaign for comment.

B-2 bomber pilots to be honored at White House Fourth of July celebration

The U.S. pilots of the B-2 bombers, that targeted Iranian nuclear facilities this month, will join President Donald Trump at the White House on the Fourth of July. The event will also feature a flyover by B-2 Spirit bombers, which struck Iran's uranium enrichment sites at Fordo and Natanz in Operation Midnight Hammer. File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI | License Photo June 30 (UPI) -- The U.S. pilots of the B-2 bombers, that targeted Iranian nuclear facilities this month, will be honored by President Donald Trump at the White House on the Fourth of July. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced their attendance Monday. Friday's celebration will also feature a flyover by B-2 Spirit bombers, the same jets that struck Iran's uranium enrichment sites at Fordo and Natanz in Operation Midnight Hammer. "President Trump looks forward to celebrating our nation's founding on Friday in the nation's capital. To join in the celebration, the might of America's Air Force will conduct a flyover featuring our state-of-the-art F-22s, B-2s and F-35s -- the same air capabilities used for the decisive and successful strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities," Leavitt said in a statement. President Trump is scheduled to speak at the event. Additional personnel from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri, where the bombers are based, are also expected to attend. On Sunday, Trump told Fox News that plans were in the works to honor the pilots. "Yes, they're going to come to the White House," Trump said. "These people flew 36 hours in a small space, a big plane, but a small space mostly occupied by bombs, and they flew so brilliantly." According to the Trump administration, the 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs and long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles "completely and fully obliterated" Iran's nuclear program. The Pentagon said seven B-2 bombers dropped 14 bunker-buster bombs, while other B-2's flew over the Pacific as decoys. The bombers refueled multiple times while in flight. U.S. officials have pushed back on a leaked preliminary report from the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency that said the strikes had only set back Iran's nuclear development by a few months. Iran has acknowledged that the nuclear sites sustained "serious and significant damage" from the strikes.
