Ujjwal Nikam thanks President Murmu for Rajya Sabha nomination
Nikam shared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally informed him about the nomination via a phone call.
'I thank President Droupadi Murmu for nominating me. When I met PM Narendra Modi during the Lok Sabha election campaign, he expressed his faith in me. Yesterday, PM Modi called to inform me about the nomination. He asked whether he should speak in Hindi or Marathi--both of us laughed. Then he spoke to me in Marathi and told me that the President wanted to assign me a responsibility, and he informed me of her decision,' Nikam told ANI.
'I immediately said yes. I thank the party leadership and also Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis,' said Nikkam who had earlier contested from Mumbai North Central on the BJP ticket in the Lok Sabha polls held last year.
Ujjwal Nikam is best known for handling high-profile criminal cases, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks trial of Ajmal Kasab and the 1993 Bombay blasts case.
Nikam, along with former Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla; C Sadanandan Master, a veteran social worker and educationist from Kerala; and Meenakshi Jain, a noted historian, was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India--recognising their excellence in public service and scholarship.
Shringla, known for his distinguished diplomatic career, served as India's Ambassador to the United States and Bangladesh, and was Foreign Secretary from January 2020 to April 2022. Sadanandan Master has decades of grassroots service in Kerala, while Meenakshi Jain is widely recognised for her contributions to the study of Indian history and civilisation.
These individuals were nominated under the powers conferred by Article 80(1)(a) of the Constitution, read with clause (3) of the same article. The nominations fill vacancies created by the retirement of previously nominated members.
The Ministry of Home Affairs announced the nominations through an official notification. These appointments are seen as a recognition of significant national contributions in the fields of law, diplomacy, social service, and historical scholarship. (ANI)

SC declines plea to deregister AIMIM, suggests broader petition on communal appeals
The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to entertain a plea seeking directions to the Election Commission of India to deregister parliamentarian Asaduddin Owaisi-led All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Musalimeen as a political party. A bench of justices Surya Kant and justice Joymala Bagchi suggested that the petitioner could file a plea on the larger issue of political parties invoking communal statements. "We are not on communal parties , etc. Sometimes, regional parties invoke regional sentiments... So what should be done... There are parties who also invoke caste issues that are equally dangerous. Without criticising anyone, such issues can be raised," justice Kant said. The bench allowed the petitioner to file a fresh plea raising larger issues regarding the validity of political parties with religious objectives. The plea was filed by Tirupati Narasimha Murari , who alleged that AIMIM 's declared objectives were to serve the Muslim community alone, violating the principle of secularism, and hence it cannot be recognised as a political party. The bench, however, observed that as per the constitution of the party, its objective is to work for every backward section. The bench said the party's constitution is "for every backward class in society, including those belonging to minority community... backward both economically and in the field of education... that's what the Constitution professes". Justice Kant said, "There are certain rights guaranteed to minorities under the Constitution... party's political manifesto or constitution says it will work for the protection of those rights granted under the Constitution." The senior judge pointed out that India's Constitution grants protection to minorities. "Suppose a party says we will promote untouchability; that is absolutely offending. That must be struck down, that must be banned... Suppose a religious law is protected under the Constitution and a political party says it will teach that law, they will teach because it is protected under the Constitution... What is only within the framework of the Constitution (that may not be objectionable)," justice Kant said. SC advised the petitioner to file a "neutral" petition.

Voter revision can't stop Assam's demographic invasion: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday said voter list revision cannot stop the demographic invasion which several areas of the state are facing. Sarma said Assam requires an indigenous solution for the problem as the cut-off date for determination of citizenship is 1951 in the rest of the country while in Assam it is 1971. The cut-off date for detecting foreigners in the state was set as March 24, 1971 in accordance with the Assam Accord , which was signed after a six-year anti-foreigners' movement led by AASU. Sarma told reporters in Guwahati that over the last four years, 160 sq km of land has been cleared through eviction and nearly 50,000 people have been asked to leave. He said the names of several of them are in the list of voters of two districts and the deputy commissions are striking off the dual names after the eviction drive. "Assam's situation is different," said Sarma. "Whoever was ever evicted, the deputy commissioner must have deleted the names from the voter list. So, voter revision cannot stop demographic invasion, as in Assam the citizenship starts from 1971, not 1951, like in the rest of the country. So, technically, you may not say that everybody is not an Indian."

Govt to table 8 new Bills in monsoon session of Parliament starting July 21
For the monsoon session of Parliament, which begins on July 21, the government has listed eight new Bills, including the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions), Taxation Laws (Amendment), and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bills. The session is also set to see the Opposition INDIA bloc parties demand that the government brief Parliament on Operation Sindoor and India's foreign policy, especially with China. They may also seek information on the proposed India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement and US President Donald Trump's repeated claims that he used trade as a bargaining chip to persuade India and Pakistan to end their military conflict. On Tuesday, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who is also leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, met Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. 'The Opposition wants a productive Rajya Sabha session from July 21. For that to happen, a number of strategic, political, foreign policy and socio-economic issues that are of great public concern need to be debated and discussed," Kharge said in a post on X after the meeting. The government's 'tentative' list of business for the monsoon session, released by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha secretariats late Monday evening, does not mention a Bill to amend the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) of 2016. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance is currently studying the IBC to recommend to the government ways to make it more robust. In its three meetings on the subject, 'review of working IBC and emerging issues', the panel has tried to understand the perspectives of banks. At its meeting slated for July 29, it will meet representatives of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The government is also set to introduce the Geoheritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance), National Sports Governance Bill, and National Anti- Doping (Amendment) Bills. According to the government's list of business, the Mines and Minerals Bill will seek to provide for viable recovery of associated critical minerals, inclusion of contiguous area in a lease for optimal and scientific mining of deep-seated minerals and widening the scope of National Mineral Exploration Trust. The Jan Vishwas Bill seeks to foster ease of doing business and to promote ease of living. The Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill seeks to include IIM Guwahati in the Schedule of the Act. The Geoheritage Sites and Geo-relics (Preservation and Maintenance) Bill seeks to provide for the declaration, preservation, protection and maintenance of geoheritage sites and geo-relics of national importance for geological studies. The National Sports Governance Bill aims to establish institutional capacity and standards for the governance of sports federations. It would also help establish measures for the resolution of sports grievances and sports disputes. In addition to these Bills, Parliament will also consider some of the pending Bills, including the Income-tax Bill, which was referred to a select committee during the Budget session for further scrutiny. The government will also seek Parliament approval for having extended the President's Rule in Manipur.
