SRG.OG turn focus to MSC title defence
Selangor Red Giants Esports chairman Simon Lim said the players will be given a seven-day break before resuming training to prepare for their MSC title defence.
'We are going to defend our MSC crown, and it won't be easy. As you can see, every team has improved their gameplay.
'However, I have full confidence in our players and coaches. Who knows, we might even become back-to-back MSC champions,' he said in a statement today.
SRG.OG made history last year by becoming the first Malaysian team to win the MSC, defeating Filipino side AP Bren Sport 4-2 in the final.
The breakthrough also ended a seven-year title drought for Malaysian teams at international MLBB tournaments.
Malaysia will be represented by two teams at MSC 2025, with Homebois also qualifying as MPLMY Season 15 runners-up.
Simon also credited SRG.OG's MPLMY title hat-trick to the dedication and hard work of the players and coaches, who sacrificed their time and energy to retain the trophy.
'Whenever the players weren't satisfied with how a scrim session went, they would be the ones asking for extra scrims.
'They were willing to go the extra mile, put in more effort, and this is the reward they have earned,' he said.
Yesterday, SRG.OG became the first team to complete an MPLMY championship hat-trick after defeating Homebois 4-0 in the grand final at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara.

Swimmer Hoe Yean makes Universiade history
KUALA LUMPUR: Swimmer Khiew Hoe Yean rewrote his own national record to deliver a historic silver medal for Malaysia on the first day of the World University Games in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany yesterday. The 22-year-old clocked 3:47.38s in the 400m freestyle to slash almost a second off his previous best time of 3:48.36s achieved at the Australian Championships in April last year. Hoe Yean also became only the second Malaysian swimmer (Jeffrey Ong won the men's 1,500m freestyle silver in 1991 in England) to stand on the podium in Universiade history. Nikolai Kolesnikov, swimming under the Individual Neutral Athletes banner, took gold in 3:46.66s and American Ryan James Erisman Jr claimed the bronze in 3:47.52s. Hoe Yean will swim in the men's 200m freestyle today.

Soon Huat-Shevon stopped by China's world No.2 pair
KUALA LUMPUR: Goh Soon Huat–Shevon Lai's bid to reach the Japan Open semi-finals ended in heartbreak once again, as the world No. 6 mixed doubles fell to defending champions Jiang Zhen Bang–Wei Ya Xin of China today. The Malaysian husband-and-wife team went down 21-13, 23-21 in the quarter-finals — their eighth defeat in nine encounters against the formidable world No. 2 pair. Soon Huat–Shevon showed fighting spirit in the second game, clawing back from 14-18 down to hold game point at 20-19, but were unable to convert as the Chinese duo held firm to close out the match. Their defeat also dashed hopes of an all-Malaysian semi-final, following earlier progress by compatriots Chen Tang Jie–Toh Ee Wei. The loss continues a frustrating trend for Soon Huat–Shevon, who have now exited in the quarter-finals in eight of their last nine tournaments. It underlined their consistency in reaching the latter stages, but also their struggle to break through to the next level.

Soon Huat-Shevon bow out of Japan Open
PETALING JAYA: Shuttlers Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie's run in the Japan Open came to an end after they went down to China's Jiang Zhenbang-Wei Yaxin in the mixed doubles quarter-finals. Soon Huat-Shevon had an opportunity to take the match to a third and deciding game when they led 20-19 in the second game but could not clinch the deal and lost 13-21, 21-23 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Friday (July 18). The defeat meant that the independent pair's hopes of setting up an all-Malaysian last-four clash against Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei went up in smoke. World No. 4 Tang Jie-Ee Wei will instead take on world No. 2 Zhenbang-Yaxin on Saturday (July 19) for a place in the final.
