Indian players and members of the support staff wore black armbands before the start of the intra-squad match last week, and on Day 3 of the WTC 2025 final, Australian and South African players also wore black armbands in memory of the victims of the Ahmedabad plane crash.
In the first Test of the five-match series, India will bat first. England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss on Friday and invited India to bat first in Shubman Gill's first Test as India captain. Tamil Nadu batter B Sai Sudharsan is making his Test debut for India at Headingley, and the 23-year-old cricketer will bat at No. 3. Gill will come out at No. 4, and he will be followed by Rishabh Pant and Karun Nair.
Nair, who has a triple century to his name in Test cricket, last played a Test match for India in 2017.
Ravindra Jadeja is the lone spinner in India's playing XI, and Shardul Thakur has been preferred over Nitish Kumar Reddy for the fast-bowling all-rounder's role.
Shardul, who last played a Test match for India in December 2023 against South Africa in Centurion, scored 122 runs in the intra-squad match.
Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Prasidh Krishna are the three fast bowlers for India in Leeds.

'No Man, Why': Wiaan Mulder Labelled 'Brian Lara Fan' After Declaration On 367* Chasing History
Wiaan Mulder did something rare on Monday. Just 33 runs away from one of most historic records in Test history, the South African put his team in front in the second Test against Zimbabwe and chose to declare on 367. South Africa's Wiaan Mulder passed up the opportunity to break Brian Lara 's long-standing record of the highest score in Test cricket by declaring the innings despite being only 33 runs short of the historic achievement. Mulder's outing at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, ranks fifth in the all-time list of highest scores in a Test match, with Lara topping the board for his 400 not out against England at St. John's in 2004. Australia's Matthew Hayden and Sri Lanka's Mahela Jaywardene are the other two batters on the list, with the former West Indies skipper's 375 vs England occupying the third spot. The decision drew mixed response. SA will win this Test with a day to spare, those few overs after lunch would never haunt them. 400 was a deserved. That said 367 is an amazing achievement. Congratulations Wessie! — Dale Steyn (@DaleSteyn62) July 7, 2025 No man no no no... why the declaration So much time left in the game. Could have told him he's got 5 overs to go out there and smash it to try and get to 400 — Tabraiz Shamsi (@shamsi90) July 7, 2025 Mulder walks off unbeaten on 367 Just 33 runs short of a world record and he chose to declare. He's Brian Lara Fan — Ayyappan (@Ayyappan_1504) July 7, 2025 Mulder, 27, is captaining the Proteas for the first time in the second Test of the two-game series against Zimbabwe and was unbeaten at 367 when lunch was called. With South Africa having scored 626/5, the all-rounder decided to call curtains on their innings and did not go for a chance to enter the elusive 400-run club. His first-inning total is now the highest individual score by a South African in Test history. Having come in at 24 for two on Day 1, Mulder showed immense composure on his debut captaincy stint. His partnerships defined the innings - 184 runs with David Bedingham and 217 runs off only 185 deliveries for the fourth wicket with Lhuan-dre Pretorius. It is the second-highest fourth-wicket stand for South Africa away from home. At stumps on Sunday, he had already racked up 264 runs - the most by any South African in a single day of Test cricket and the second-most ever on an opening day globally. Resuming on Day 2, he wasted no time to bring up his triple hundred, joining Hashim Amla as the second South African to reach the mark in Tests. His 300 came off 297 balls, making it the second-fastest in Test history. Mulder's double-century off 214 deliveries had already placed him second on South Africa's fastest double tons list behind Herschelle Gibbs. His triple-century now tops another chart: the highest individual score by a South African in Tests, surpassing Amla's 311 not out. Zimbabwe were dealt with early blows as Codi Yusuf claimed two early wickets and Corbin Bosch opened his tally to leave the hosts reeling at 18/3.

Azharuddin lauds Team India's dominance over England
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 7 (ANI): India secured a historic victory at Birmingham, thrashing England by a massive margin of 336 runs to take a 1-1 lead in the Test series. The win marked India's first-ever Test triumph at the iconic Edgbaston, and it came in emphatic fashion despite the absence of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Former India captain and Congress leader Mohammad Azharuddin hailed the team's performance, calling the win a 'significant achievement.' 'The team really played well. England was completely dominated by us,' Azharuddin told ANI. 'After losing the first match, I thought India would be a pushover, but winning the Test without Bumrah is a significant achievement. Bumrah is one of the finest bowlers, and not having him and still winning is outstanding,' he remarked. India's dominance was spearheaded by Indian captain Shubman Gill, who produced a match-winning performance with the bat, scoring 269 in the first innings and following it up with 161 in the second, amassing a staggering 430 runs in the match. His effort earned him the 'Player of the Match' award. 'I congratulate the team and the captain. He (Shubman Gill) really batted well and played excellently in both innings,' Azhar added. Coming to the match, England once again opted to field first. After getting KL Rahul (2) early, an 80-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal (87 in 107 balls, with 13 fours) and Karun Nair (31 in 50 balls, with five fours) helped India gain some footing in the match. Skipper Shubman Gill had valuable partnerships of 203 runs with Ravindra Jadeja (89 in 137 balls, with 10 fours and a six) and a 144-run stand against Washington Sundar (42 in 103 balls, with three fours and a six), helping India towards 587, scoring 269 in 387 balls himself, with 30 fours and three sixes. Shoaib Bashir (3/167) was the pick of the bowlers for England, while Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue also managed two each. In England's first innings, India had them on the ropes with 84/5. However, a 303-run stand between Harry Brook (158 in 234 balls, with 17 fours and a six) and wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith (184* in 207 balls, with 21 fours and four sixes) sent India on an endless hunt for leather and answers. However, Siraj (6/70) and Akash Deep (4/88) got something out of the new ball and took down the last five wickets for 20 runs, bundling them down for 407 runs, gaining a 180-run lead. India's response was a swift half-century partnership between Jaiswal (28 in 22 balls, with six fours) and KL Rahul, who also continued his good run with a 10-boundary-filled 55 in 84 balls. A 110-run stand for the fourth wicket between Rishabh Pant (65 in 58 balls, with eight fours and three sixes) and Gill upped the attack, while Gill managed yet another epic 175-run stand with Jadeja, scoring 161 in 162 balls, with 13 fours and eight sixes. Jadeja scored an unbeaten 69* in 118 balls, with five fours and a six. India declared at 427/6, leading by 607 runs and setting England a monstrous 608 runs to win. During the run-chase, England was restricted to 50/3. Jamie Smith (88 in 99, with nine fours and four sixes) was the only glimmer of hope for England as they were skittled out for just 271 runs, losing by 336 runs, thanks to a brilliant spell from Akash Deep (6/99), who ended up taking a ten-fer. IND vs ENG: 'Even if India lose the series ...' - Yograj Singh after India beat England at Edgbaston
India captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir (Image by) Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has come out in support of national team head coach Gautam Gambhir , urging critics to back the 43-year-old following India's historic win at Edgbaston. Under Gambhir's guidance, the Shubman Gill-led side secured their first-ever Test victory at the venue, defeating England by 336 runs to level the five-match series 1-1. Prior to the triumph in Birmingham, Gambhir faced scrutiny for India's form in the longest format, particularly after the team's five-wicket loss to England in the series opener at Leeds. However, Yograj stressed that Gambhir should not be criticised, as he continues to contribute positively to Indian cricket . 'Indian players are consistently growing and improving their game. We will support them always. We should not speak about Gautam Gambhir because he is doing well. Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Rahul Dravid are giving back to cricket because they have received so much,' Yograj told ANI. Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir shut critics with thumping win over England India's recent Test form had been underwhelming, with losses piling up since the start of their home series against New Zealand last year. The side had suffered seven defeats in nine matches, including a whitewash by the Kiwis, a 3-1 loss in Australia, and the opening Test against England. Despite the inconsistent run, Yograj urged for continued support for the team. 'Even if our team loses the series, we should not demoralise them. If you lose, you will not be there to explain; if you win, you don't have to explain. We hope that we win the series under the captaincy of Shubman Gill ,' he said. Poll Do you think Gautam Gambhir deserves support after India's victory at Edgbaston? Yes, he has proven himself.
