Department of International Trade Promotion helps US grocery chain source Thai goods

Bangkok Post5 days ago
The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) has joined forces with leading US Asian grocery chain H Mart to expand the presence of Thai food products in the American market.
This strategic collaboration aims to strengthen exports, enhance visibility of Thai brands and scale up the digital retail platform Topthai on H Mart's online channels.
Speaking after meeting H Mart executives, DITP director-general Sunanta Kangvalkulkij said both parties had exchanged views on the growing demand for Thai products as H Mart plans to open three new branches this year.
H Mart, the largest Asian supermarket chain in the US, has sought the DITP's support in sourcing more Thai exporters, particularly of jasmine rice, coconut water, coconut milk and tropical fruit juices.
While the company raised concerns over tariffs, it remains confident the Thai government will implement support measures without affecting US retail prices.
The DITP also discussed organising joint promotions through Topthai, a concept store designed to sell Thai products. Similar online Topthai stores have already been launched across more than 10 countries.
From Aug 30–Sept 1 last year, the DITP and H Mart held a promotion to distribute Thai products like jasmine rice, coconut water and snacks, generating over 8.4 million baht in sales.
In addition, H Mart executives have been invited to attend Thaifex–Anuga Asia 2026 to select more Thai food products for distribution and the rice product showcase in New York hosted by the International Trade Promotion Office.
H Mart operates in 16 states in the US and aims to expand to 87 branches by the end of this year. The company's annual revenue is estimated at US$1.2–1.5 billion.
It imports a variety of Thai goods, including seafood, frozen and canned fruits, dried fruits, jasmine rice, noodles, instant noodles, sauces, fermented fish sauce, snacks and ready-to-eat meals.
Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat is in New York from July 19–22 to welcome Princess Ubolratana, who will chair an event to promote "Thai Select" restaurants by harnessing Thai soft power in the industry.

Steps prepared to ease conflict's economic impact along Thai-Cambodian border

The Finance Ministry has issued measures to alleviate the economic impact on communities along the Thai-Cambodian border by implementing debt suspensions, interest rate reductions, and low-interest loan measures for affected individuals. According to Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, the ongoing unrest stemming from clashes between security forces along the Thai–Cambodian border has affected the safety of local residents and expanded its impact to the economy and social fabric of surrounding communities. The incidents have caused property damage and severely disrupted the livelihoods, occupations, and businesses of the people in the area. In response, the Finance Ministry has directed state financial institutions to assist through various measures aimed at alleviating the impact. For example, the Government Savings Bank has been tasked with offering a suspension on principal repayments and partial interest payments, along with low-interest loans to small entrepreneurs at a monthly interest rate of just 0.75%, with a repayment term of 60 months. For SMEs, loans of up to 5 million baht per borrower are available, with a first-year interest rate of the minimum loan rate (MLR) minus 2.65%, followed by the MLR for the remainder of the 7-year loan term. Meanwhile, the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives will provide emergency loans for consumer expenses, up to 50,000 baht per borrower, with an interest rate at the minimum retail rate (MRR) and a loan term of up to three years. The first six months are interest-free. According to Mr Pichai, the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Bank of Thailand would offer a fixed interest rate of 3% a year for three years, with a maximum loan term of 10 years. Meanwhile, the Export-Import Bank of Thailand will extend debt repayment periods up to 365 days, reduce interest rates by up to 20% of the original rate, and provide a temporary credit line increase of up to 30% of the original limit for one year, with a starting interest rate of 2.99% a year. Additionally, the Comptroller General's Department has increased the emergency spending authority for provincial governors along the Cambodian border to 100 million baht in four provinces, namely Surin, Sri Sa Ket, Buri Ram and Ubon Ratchathani, to support relief efforts for people affected by border-related issues. Governors are usually authorised to spend no more than 20 million baht under emergency provisions. In a separate development, Suwannee Jetsadhasak, assistant governor of the Bank of Thailand's financial institutions policy group, said the central bank is closely monitoring how financial institutions are supporting both their employees and customers during the ongoing situation. Thai financial institutions with branches in Cambodia have gradually repatriated their Thai staff, with all expected to return to Thailand as of yesterday. Meanwhile, some bank branches in Thai provinces along the border, specifically Surin, Sri Saket, Ubon Ratchathani, Buri Ram, Sa Kaeo, Trat and Chanthaburi, have been temporarily closed. On Thursday, the Thai Bankers' Association announced that its member banks are temporarily closing their branches along the Thai–Cambodian border to ensure the safety of customers and the public, citing unrest in the area that has resulted in loss of life, property damage, and disruption to local livelihoods.

Rising border tensions weigh on investor sentiment

Escalating tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border are affecting investor sentiment and threatening several key business sectors, especially beverages, tourism, retail oil and exports, according to Daol Securities (Thailand). Mongkol Puangpetra, executive vice-president for strategy research at Daol, issued a cautious investment outlook, highlighting specific downside risks for companies with significant exposure to Cambodia. The firm singled out Samart Aviation Solutions (SAV) and Carabao Group (CBG) as the most vulnerable in this climate. SAV, which derives all of its revenue from its air traffic control concessions in Cambodia (valid through 2051), is viewed as highly sensitive to any deterioration in Thai-Cambodian relations. Daol recommends postponing investments in SAV until the situation stabilises, citing heightened geopolitical risk. Meanwhile, CBG, a major energy drinks producer, earns roughly 13% of its revenue from Cambodia, where it commands a market share of more than 50%. The company has a three-month inventory buffer and has shifted to sea freight to mitigate risk, though shipments now take 3-4 days longer than land transport. Despite the tension, Cambodian distributors report stable sales and consumption levels. However, should exports halt between July and December, CBG could face a 340-million-baht loss in net profit, equal to around 10% of its earnings. The brokerage believes this downside is largely priced in, and maintains its full-year profit forecast for CBG at 3.3 billion baht. Meanwhile, CBG's new factory in Cambodia is still slated to open on Dec 1. Other beverage firms such as Osotspa (OSP) have only limited exposure, with Cambodian exports accounting for just 1% of revenue. According to Daol, retail operators have reported minimal risk from border unrest. Siam Global House (GLOBAL), which operates two stores in Cambodia through a 55%-owned joint venture, earns less than 2% of its revenue from the Cambodian market, while CP Axtra (CPAXT) operates three stores in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, contributing less than 1% of revenue. CP All, the local operator of 7-Eleven, has 112 stores in Cambodia, but the revenue impact remains less than 1%, noted the brokerage. For the retail oil sector, PTT Oil and Retail (OR), which has a significant presence with 186 petrol stations and 71 convenience stores in Cambodia, has reported no operational disruptions so far. Likewise, the food sector reported minimal impact, with Thai Union Group (TU) reporting just 0.01% of revenue from Cambodian exports, and GFPT Plc, which relies on Cambodian labour for 20% of its workforce through third-party agencies, reporting no repatriation requests or labour disruptions. According to Daol, Thai construction firms appear insulated from immediate fallout. CH Karnchang (CK) has no direct Cambodian labour, while Stecon Group (STECON) and SEAFCO Plc report 5% and fewer than 10% of its workforce as being Cambodian, respectively. All these firms have confirmed that their operations are functioning normally at present. However, the border conflict may discourage travellers, with the brokerage warning that escalating tensions could negatively affect inbound tourism. Several countries have issued travel advisories, cautioning against travel to areas near the border.

Central Pattana in tie-up with Fazaa Card

Central Pattana Plc (CPN), a leading real estate developer and the operator of Central shopping centres nationwide, has announced a major collaboration with Fazaa Card, the largest national CRM programme in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to offer privileges to wealthy Emiratis. CPN is the first and only shopping centre developer in Asia to enter into a partnership at the ecosystem level with a UAE national-level partner and is offering special privileges at CentralWorld, Central Village and Central Phuket, which are located at top tourist destinations. The Fazaa Card is a premium membership card established by the UAE's Ministry of Interior with over 1.5 million members including high-ranking government officials and civil servants, investors, those who receive special privileges from the Golden Visa Card, and those with high purchasing power. Nattakit Tangpoonsinthana, chief marketing officer at CPN, said Middle Eastern tourists are a high-value and high-potential market for Thai tourism. In 2025, members of this group can generate a cash flow of up to 90,000-100,000 baht a trip from their spending, he said. This partnership reflects CPN's success in connecting with high-end international customers worldwide, aligning with the Tourism Authority of Thailand's focus on attracting quality shoppers, he added. Mr Nattakit said there are three strategies fuelling the partnership. Firstly, the company has established a strategic alliance with a national-level CRM that includes the Fazaa Card. He said this alliance not only helps to accurately reach the upper-level target group, but also elevates Thailand's potential to become a 'Global Elite Destination'. It can utilise the Fazaa Card's powerful CRM database and platform to design joint campaigns to boost consumer spending and promote the image of Thai brands internationally. Previously, CPN collaborated with the Esaad Card, a UAE membership card established by Dubai Police. Secondly, CPN curates experiences for high-spending tourists. Fazaa card members will enjoy welcome packages with discounts of up to 40% from leading stores in shopping centres; exclusive lounge access at CentralWorld and Central Village; Aquaria Phuket tickets at Central Phuket; shuttle bus passes from CentralWorld to Central Village and from Central Village to Suvarnabhumi Airport; and free gifts and exclusive discounts from selected brands. Lastly, Mr Nattakit said the company is strengthening its reputation as a global elite destination and creating a complete tourism ecosystem by seamlessly connecting with world-leading partners. These include WeChat Pay, Alipay, MasterCard, Klook, The Shilla, Lotte Duty Free and Daimaru.
