Mumbai: Hundreds of commuters in the city, mostly office-goers, slammed transport minister Pratap Sarnaik's decision to take action against private aggregator bus shuttles for "operating across MMR without a licence from state govt.
" Uber Shuttle will completely shut down from Saturday morning.
On Friday, Sarnaik issued an official directive that legal action will be taken against private transport businesses, including buses, cars, and bike taxis, if they violate rules.
Those using Cityflo and Uber Shuttles for daily commutes to office and back told TOI that if these app-based buses go off roads, they would be inconvenienced. Cityflo continues to operate and no action initiated so far, sources said.

"It will deprive commuters the benefit of travelling comfortably in these premium app-based buses which guarantee confirmed seats," said Sandeep Sinha, who takes the Uber Shuttle from Thane Viviana Mall to BKC regularly and travels in BharatBenz buses.
These shuttles connect Navi Mumbai, Thane, and Mumbai to commercial hubs such as BKC and Nariman Point, catering to commuters in over 500 private buses.
Raising the issue of aggregator buses in the legislative council on Friday, BJP MLC Niranjan Davkhare said Cityflo buses were a boon for office-goers and should not be banned.

"Take action against them if there are any violations, but do not ban them," he urged. Vashi resident Shweta Desai, a Cityflo user, said, "Cityflo is a hit with commuters travelling the north-south corridor of the city or from Mumbai to Thane/Navi Mumbai.
It has led to ease of commuting to the office and back, with routes from Vashi to Andheri, Worli, or south Mumbai commercial hubs."
Deepa Mukherjee from Mulund said, "I travel comfortably to Goregaon East unlike waiting in a long queue for BEST AC buses."
Experts said that under the central govt guidelines, state should have taken the initiative to issue licences to app-based buses under the aggregator policy. On Friday, a group of experts participated in discussions on how to go ahead with the state's Premium Bus Aggregator policy at a meeting by the Maharashtra Institution for Transformation.
Netizens poured their anger against the action on aggregator bus shuttles on social media.
"Why are these ministers after public convenience? At least these bus services make pathetic roads, highly congested road journeys bearable," said one post on X. Another post stated: "Citizens ask 'Can we get more BEST buses?' & govt says No; Citizens say 'Ok, we will use pvt buses' & Govt says 'Sorry, not allowed. We will take them off the roads too'.
" A netizen posted on X: "Those people who want better service and are ready to pay should get it — that's what Cityflo and other players are giving.
Why should govt have a problem? If Ola and Uber cabs can run, why not buses?", while another wrote: "First you cannot provide good public transport buses, and now you do not want to allow anyone offering good bus service to us. This is anti-citizen."

Mumbai: Hundreds of daily office-goers were angry on Friday, with many criticising on social media, over the transport minister's latest decision to take action against all private aggregator bus shuttles for "operating across MMR without a licence from state govt."
Uber's shuttle will completely shut down from Saturday morning, and the impact will be felt on Monday.
Minister Pratap Sarnaik also issued an official directive on Friday afternoon that legal action will be taken against private transport businesses, including buses, cars, and bike taxis, if they violated the rules. The issue came up in Vidhan Bhavan on Friday. Raising the issue of aggregator buses in the legislative council on Friday, BJP MLC Niranjan Davkhare said the Cityflo buses were a boon for office-goers and should not be banned.
"Take action against them if there are any violations but do not ban them," he said.
Vashi resident Shweta Desai, a Cityflo user, said, "Cityflo is a superhit with commuters travelling the north-south corridor of the city or from Mumbai to Thane/Navi Mumbai. "Those people who want better service and are ready to pay should get it -- that's what Cityflo and other players are giving. Why should govt have a problem? If Ola and Uber cabs can run, why not buses?" "First you cannot provide good public transport buses, and now you do not want to allow anyone offering good bus service to us.
This is anti-citizen." "Mr Sarnaik, how about investing more in BEST. Looks like you're busy troubling Mumbaikars rather than helping them." "Citizens ask 'Can we get more BEST buses?' & govt says No; Citizens say 'Ok, we will use pvt buses' & Govt says 'Sorry, not allowed. We will take them off the roads too.'"

Solve traders' issues on priority basis: DM

Kanpur: District magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh on Saturday instructed the officials to ensure solution of trade related problems on priority basis. Singh was chairing a Vyapar Bandhu meeting with traders. The traders informed that during rainy days, many areas including Lajpat Nagar, Ranjit Nagar, Gumti Number Five, Kaushalpuri, Sant Nagar kabadi market, JK Mandir Marg, Sarvodaya Nagar and Guru Nanak School Marg face waterlogging and traffic jams, due to which traffic remains affected for hours. The DM asked the municipal xorporation to take concrete action on this. On the problem of drainage of rain water in Transport Nagar located in Babupurwa, he directed to prepare DPR and ordered necessary action. The traders also raised the issue of begging at major intersections in the city, which poses a risk of accidents when traffic signals are off. Reacting over it, Singh stated that this was a serious social challenge, which would be resolved in a phased manner under the Smile scheme of the Central Govt and efforts would be made towards rehabilitation. On the demand for removal of traffic lights which were inoperative for years at places like Moolganj, Afeem Kothi and Deputy Padhva, he assured that appropriate action would be taken in this regard. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Live Update: The Strategy Uses By Successful Intraday Trader TradeWise Learn More Undo The problem of non-availability of pink toilets for women in Shastri Nagar market and encroachment on major commercial places were also raised prominently in the meeting, on which necessary instructions were given to concerned officials by the district magistrate.

Israeli gunshots, strikes kill at least 25 in Gaza, some while seeking aid

Israeli airstrikes and gunshots overnight killed at least 25 people, according to Palestinian health officials and the ambulance service on Saturday, as ceasefire talks appear to have stalled and Gaza faces famine. The majority of victims were killed by gunfire as they waited for aid trucks close to the Zikim crossing with Israel, said staff at Shifa hospital, where the bodies were brought. Techno Mag Learn More Undo Those killed in strikes include four people in an apartment building in Gaza City, among others, hospital staff and the ambulance service said. The strikes come as ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas have hit a standstill after the US and Israel recalled their negotiating teams on Thursday, throwing the future of the talks into further uncertainty. Live Events Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Friday his government was considering "alternative options" to ceasefire talks with Hamas. His comments came as a Hamas official said negotiations were expected to resume next week and portrayed the recall of the Israeli and American delegations as a pressure tactic. Egypt and Qatar, which are mediating the talks alongside the United States, said the pause was only temporary and that talks would resume, though they did not say when. Experts and the UN warn of famine For desperate Palestinians, a ceasefire can't come soon enough. The United Nations and experts say that Palestinians in Gaza are at risk of famine, with reports of increasing numbers of people dying from causes related to malnutrition. While Israel's army says it's allowing aid into the enclave with no limit on the number of trucks that can enter, the UN says it is hampered by Israeli military restrictions on its movements and incidents of criminal looting. The Zikim crossing shootings come days after at least 80 Palestinians were killed trying to reach aid entering through the same crossing. Israel's military said at the time its soldiers shot at a gathering of thousands of Palestinians who posed a threat, and that it was aware of some casualties. During the shootings Friday night, Sherif Abu Aisha said people started running when they saw a light that they thought was from the aid trucks, but as they got close, they realised it was from Israel's tanks. That's when the army started firing on people, he told The Associated Press. He said his uncle, a father of eight, was among those killed. "We went because there is no food ... and nothing was distributed," he said. Israel is facing increased international pressure to alleviate the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza . More than two dozen Western-aligned countries and over 100 charity and human rights groups have called for an end to the war, harshly criticising Israel's blockade and a new aid delivery model it has rolled out. The charities and rights groups said even their own staff were struggling to get enough food. For the first time in months, Israel said it is allowing airdrops, requested by Jordan. A Jordanian official said the airdrops will mainly be food and milk formula. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote in a newspaper article on Saturday that the UK was "working urgently" with Jordan to get British aid into Gaza. Aid group the World Central Kitchen said on Friday that it was resuming limited cooking operations in Deir al-Balah after being forced to halt due to a lack of food supplies. It said it's trying to serve 60,000 meals daily through its field kitchen and partner community kitchens, less than half of what it's cooked over the previous month.
