A lot more AI characters are coming to Fortnite

The Verge04-06-2025
AI Darth Vader was a huge hit in Fortnite, and now Epic plans to let creators make AI-powered NPCs for their own in-game experiences. But a senior Epic exec says that creators should expect a 'learning curve' when using them — something Epic had to figure out on its own.
The AI Vader that Epic made lets users talk to the character using their voice and hear an AI-generated version of James Earl Jones's Vader voice talk back. It was the 'culmination of a very intense effort for a character everybody understands,' Saxs Persson, Epic's EVP of the Fortnite ecosystem, tells The Verge.
But Epic couldn't just set an AI chatbot loose — 'a lot' went into defining how Vader reacted and dialing in the voice. The work was worth it, though; in-game, Vader's voice sounds just like the movies, and when he's on your team, he's a menacing, aggressive force. Persson says that Vader was ultimately 'integrated into gameplay in a way that every player could understand' and he hopes creators are able to make similar things.
Vader's rollout wasn't perfect; a popular streamer, Loserfruit, was able to get Vader to swear, which Epic fixed shortly after it happened. Persson says that it was a 'learning experience' and that the team has built multiple layers of how it does its safety checks.
Epic also tries to build systems to prevent those kinds of things and be able to react fast. 'We do our best job on day one,' Persson says. 'But more importantly, we're ready to surround the problem and actually have fixes in place as fast as we can.' Creators making AI NPCs for Fortnite will have access to the same safety tools that Epic did for Vader.
At Unreal Fest on June 3rd, the company showed a live demo of an AI NPC called Mr. Buttons, whose only purpose was, using its voice, to try and convince the player to push a giant red button. It was a simple, effective, and funny demo that showed what's possible. The goal was to create a scenario where 'the responses are literally endless' so that 'everybody has a different experience,' Persson says.
Persson wouldn't say if or when Epic plans to bring more AI NPCs to Fortnite. He says that Epic didn't give its designer some kind of 'AI objective' when making Vader. 'Our objective is fun,' CEO Tim Sweeney says. 'AI is just another tool they have now,' Persson adds. It sounds like AI characters could show up in Epic and Disney's 'persistent universe' that's in the works, too: 'I would imagine that AI plays a role,' Persson says, noting that it would help with immersion.
Persson wouldn't share a timeline for when the universe, which was announced last year, might be available. But Epic is going to let creators make their own Star Wars- themed experiences, so perhaps somebody will create another take on an AI Darth Vader.

ABC Cancels Series After Only One Season

ABC has made another tough decision regarding one of their newest television shows. Unfortunately, for fans of one particular series, it's been confirmed that ABC has canceled the title after releasing one sole season on their network. It took quite some time for the scripted series to receive some kind of update regarding whether or not it would be renewed or canceled entirely. Now, however, we know that ABC decided on the latter. It's unfortunate that the series had to be canceled, and even more so that crew members are alleging that there was inappropriate behavior while working on the series. What began as a promising addition to the network's lineup has now ended not only in cancellation, but under the cloud of behind-the-scenes concerns that have started to come to light in recent weeks. '' Doctor Odyssey ' has been canceled after one season on ABC.' Variety notes that 'the cast's contracts expire on Monday with no move from ABC to put the series back on its schedule for the upcoming year.' With that said, the outlet does suggest one possible reason for the show's cancellation. The news was released just 'after three of the show's former crew members filed a lawsuit against Disney and 20th Television on May 30, alleging that the studio enabled an 'unchecked campaign of sexual harassment for months'' and the crew members also accused 'assistant prop master Tyler Patton of making 'sexual jokes, innuendos, comments, sexual gestures and images' in addition to 'unwanted touching' including 'openly grabbing a visiting female employee's buttocks.' The medical drama series, created by Ryan Murphy, starred Joshua Jackson as Max Bankman. His character is a doctor on a luxury cruise line called the Odyssey. The story revolves around Bankman as he assists with medical emergencies while overseas. The series Doctor Odyssey was produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the latest titles to be renewed or canceled by ABC and other such television networks and platforms as we have them.

ESPN Made History On Day 1 Of Wimbledon Tournament

ESPN Made History On Day 1 Of Wimbledon Tournament originally appeared on The Spun. ESPN's investment in tennis appears to have paid off in a big way for the Worldwide Leader. This year's Wimbledon tournament, which started on Monday, reportedly drew a record audience for the Disney-owned company; setting an all-time viewership record for Day 1 of the Grand Slam event. Advertisement According to the network's PR team, an average of 539,000 people tuned in for the championships' first day, up 37% from last year's Day 1 crowd of 393,000 watchers. That is the best ratings number ESPN has had in its 22 years of Wimbledon coverage. Where those numbers go from here is anyone's guess though, as this year's tournament saw early exits for some of tennis' biggest stars including Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. Coco has been one of the sport's biggest draws since her professional debut at the age of 14 and she was as disappointed as anybody by the stunning first-round loss. "Dayana [Yastremska] started off playing strong. I couldn't find my footing out there today," Gauff said after the match, before admitting that the quick turnaround from Roland Garros likely got to her. Advertisement "I feel like mentally I was a little bit overwhelmed with everything that came afterwards. So I didn't feel like I had enough time to celebrate and also get back into it." With that said Monday was still a great number for ESPN and they'll attempt to build off that momentum as the rest of the championships continue. Kenneth Colley, Admiral Piett in a Pair of ‘Star Wars' Films, Dies at 87

Kenneth Colley, the British actor who appeared in seven features for director Ken Russell and portrayed the Darth Vader underling Admiral Piett in the Star Wars films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, has died. He was 87. Colley died Monday at his Ashford home in Kent, England, of complications from COVID and pneumonia, his agent Julian Owen announced. More from The Hollywood Reporter How Jamaal Fields-Green Took Charge of the Tony-Favorite 'MJ the Musical' and Made It His Own Why the John Garfield Retrospective at Karlovy Vary May Seem More Political Than Intended Paolo Sorrentino's 'La Grazia' Set to Open Venice Film Festival For Ken Russell, Colley played dramatist Modest Ilyich Tchaikovsky, younger brother of the famed composer, in The Music Lovers (1971), and he did six other features with the director: The Devils (1971), The Boy Friend (1971), Mahler (1974), Lisztomania (1975) — as Frédéric Chopin — The Rainbow (1989) and Prisoner of Honor (1991). In a career that spanned more than 60 years, Colley also enjoyed a fruitful association with Monty Python and its members; he worked with director Terry Gilliam in Jabberwocky (1977) and with Michael Palin and Terry Jones on a 1977 episode of the BBC's Ripping Yarns and played Jesus in Life of Brian (1979). He had a stutter that he said disappeared whenever he was onstage or in front of a camera. Colley's Firmus Piett served as first officer of the flagship Star Dreadnought Executor under Admiral Kendal Ozzel (Michael Sheard) in The Empire Strikes Back (1980), then assumed command of the ship after Ozzel's death at the hands of Vader. He wasn't expected back for Return of the Jedi (1983). 'But I got a call from my agent saying there's been a lot of fan mail about this character and George [Lucas] has decided to put him in the next one, do you want to do it?' he recalled in a 2008 interview. 'I said sure, yeah. Who wouldn't?' He returned to play Piett once more in the 2012 animated telefilm Lego Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Out. Born in Manchester on Dec. 7, 1937, Colley began his professional acting career in 1961 and went to perform for London's Old Vic, The Royal Court Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Also in the 1960s, he showed up on episodes of The Avengers, Coronation Street and Emergency-Ward 10 and in such films as How I Won the War (1967) and Oh! What a Lovely War (1968). Other notable roles included the Duke of Vienna in Shakespeare's Measure for Measure for the BBC in 1979; a Soviet colonel in Clint Eastwood's Firefox (1982); Adolf Eichmann in the 1985 NBC telefilm Wallenberg: A Hero's Story; a Nazi in the 1988-89 ABC miniseries War and Remembrance; the pirate Ben Gunn on the 1986 Disney Channel miniseries Return to Treasure Island; and a crime boss on the BBC's Peaky Blinders in 2016. Colley's work as Piett made him a popular figure at Star Wars conventions and events all over the world. 'If you let it, it becomes a way of life,' he said in that 2008 interview. 'I think we're now into the third generation of people, who were not born, and it keeps it alive. For me, the personal experience is a very long time ago, but this kind of secondary experience is going on all of the time. I've just signed a picture for someone just a minute ago. I think it may outlive me.'
