African Plant Nutrition Institute Reaches Major Milestone with Five-Year Impact Report

Gummersbach – In celebration of its fifth anniversary, the African Plant Nutrition Institute (APNI) has released a detailed report of how it has contributed to sustainable agriculture in Africa. The '2024 Annual Report: Celebrating Five Years of Growth' report shows definitive evidence of the potential of accurate research on plant nutrition to transform the agriculture of Africa and protect vital ecosystems. Shaping a science-led future for African agriculture Since its launch in 2019, APNI has been a trailblazer in agriculture innovation. The institute is dedicated to developing solutions that are applicable and help farmers increase yield while maintaining a stable environment. One of its main initiatives, 4R4 Africa, has been a major game-changer for fertilizer application by giving smallholder farmers precise application methods that maximize efficiency and minimize loss. Agri-field projects like Empower-OFE have brought together farmers and researchers to test and implement improved cultivation methods appropriate to the local environment. At the same time, Land CAPITAL has made great strides in revitalizing degraded farmland, demonstrating how farm production and protection of the environment can go hand in hand. In dry regions, the RAFAD project has provided farmers with knowledge and equipment to maintain food production in the face of increasingly unpredictable weather. Investing in Africa's agricultural future APNI's commitment to building local expertise is seen through its capacity-building programs. Its GROWING Africa program has trained hundreds of advanced agriculture professionals to meet Africa's unique challenges. With EXCEL Africa, the institute has encouraged new scientific leadership by providing research and mentorship grants to promising agronomists. Hicham El Habti, APNI Board Chair from 2019-2024, and UM6P president emphasized the mission change of the organization: 'Five years on from its birth, the African Plant Nutrition Institute is continuing to grow as a source of trusted knowledge on innovation for locally specific, data-driven agronomy in Africa. This 2024 Annual Report offers a chance to take our measure, reset our course, and remain steadfast to the people and purpose that drive our efforts.' The report also features numerous case studies of APNI's tangible effects on farming communities. In Burkina Faso, maize production has increased by nearly a third among farmers who are adopting APNI-recommended approaches. Comparable stories of success are found in Kenya, where small-scale farmers have experienced consistent yields in the midst of prolonged dry spells using water-saving techniques acquired through APNI research. Kaushik Majumdar, Director General of APNI, explained the institute's vision for the future: 'At APNI, we recognize that as Africa enters the next century, it will not only need more food, but also, more food of greater quality and variety to improve health outcomes,' Collaborative approach reaps rewards The accomplishments of APNI are a product of its expansive network of partnerships with national agricultural ministries, international research organizations, private industry partners, and local farming communities. These partnerships allow scientific advances to be translated into practical solutions at the field level. The institute's ability to bridge the gap between laboratory work and field application has made it a reliable source of information for farmers and policymakers. As APNI looks towards 2030, the institute maintains that it remains committed to its core values of scientific integrity, local relevance, and environmentally sustainable development. Morocco Emerges as Aerospace Powerhouse with 150 Firms, €2.5 Billion Revenue

Marrakech – Morocco is cementing its position as a global aerospace hub, boasting 150 companies operating factories nationwide and generating €2.5 billion in annual revenue. Speaking to French newspaper 'Le Point' at the renowned Paris Air Show, Minister of Industry and Commerce Ryad Mezzour shared insights into the sector's remarkable growth. These aerospace enterprises, concentrated in Casablanca, Tangier, Rabat and Fez, provide full-time employment to 26,000 individuals. Their primary focus lies in producing fuselages, structural components, interior furnishings, and wiring systems. Mezzour also shed light on the collaboration between national carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) and French aerospace giant Safran concerning the CFM engine. 'During French President Emmanuel Macron's visit to Morocco last October, an agreement was signed extending the partnership to the next-generation CFM-Leap engine,' he stated. Morocco's competitive edge lies in its ability to handle advanced technology, with 23,000 engineers graduating annually, 400 of whom enter the aerospace field. 'Production costs are competitive at €25 per hour, compared to €100-120 in Europe or the US,' Mezzour stressed. Looking ahead, the minister outlined ambitious plans: 'We will expand our offer to cabin fittings, landing gear manufacturing, and within ten years, we think we can offer a final assembly line for commercial aircraft.' He expressed confidence in doubling the sector's turnover by 2030. RAM is currently exploring the acquisition of the Airbus A220, a narrow-body jet well-suited for its European routes. 'A study is underway for an aircraft order by RAM, which is interested in the Airbus A220, a small-to-medium range jet suited for its European network,' Mezzour confirmed. The air show kicked off with a bang for Morocco as aviation titan Boeing inked a major deal, signaling a new chapter in its Moroccan investment strategy. Casablanca Aeronautique, a subsidiary of French group Figeac Aero, entered into a partnership agreement to manufacture machined structural parts for Boeing's 737 MAX program. This agreement builds upon a 2016 Memorandum of Understanding between Boeing and the Moroccan government. 'This commitment underscores the planemaker's desire to strengthen Morocco's industrial base and sustainably anchor its supply chains in the country,' Mezzour concluded. Figeac Aero Expands Presence in Morocco with Boeing Tie-Up

Marrakech – American aerospace giant Boeing and the Moroccan aviation industry are strengthening ties at the 55th International Paris Air Show at Le Bourget, which is being held from June 16 to 22. Figeac Aero, a French aeronautical subcontracting group specializing in metal parts, announced a new partnership with Boeing to manufacture aluminum machined parts for the 737 MAX at its Casablanca Aéronautique subsidiary in Morocco. Casablanca Aéronautique, employing 900 people, is one of Figeac Aero's largest production sites, offering industrial services ranging from machining and sheet metal work to surface treatment and assembly. This agreement shows Figeac Aero's strategy of global coverage coupled with a strong local presence. Jean-Claude Maillard, Chairman and CEO of Figeac Aero, stressed that this announcement 'reinforces management's confidence in the group's ability to achieve its new business objectives.' The partnership aligns with Figeac Aero's 'PILOT 28' strategic plan, which identifies North America and North American customers as key elements in reaching these goals. Boeing's involvement in Morocco spans several years. In 2016, the company signed a framework agreement with the Ministry of Industry and the Moroccan Investment and Export Development Agency (AMDIE) to develop local capacity and encourage suppliers to establish operations in the country. This effort has helped create jobs and attract more players to Morocco's aerospace ecosystem. Emily Belgrade, Vice President of Global Supply Chain at Boeing Commercial Airplanes, stated that this partnership speaks to Boeing's intent to 'help shape a solid aerospace ecosystem in Morocco' and build lasting, reciprocal ties with the local industry. In addition to the Figeac Aero deal, the Moroccan delegation at the Paris Air Show, led by Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour, oversaw the signing of several strategic agreements aimed at attracting cutting-edge investments and solidifying the country's industrial ecosystem. These include a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian company Genser Aerospace for the development and production of a versatile business aircraft in Morocco, and an agreement with LPF (Latécoère-Précision-Façonnage) to expand its industrial unit in Nouaceur province for the production of critical aircraft engine components. The Moroccan delegation also engaged in advanced discussions with Airbus to strengthen their strategic partnership and expand the European manufacturer's industrial presence in the country. Airbus, directly or indirectly, constitutes a major pillar of Morocco's aeronautical industry, representing nearly 60% of the sector. These agreements further enhance Morocco's position as a key player in the global aerospace industry and show the country's attractiveness for international investment in this high-tech sector.
