Mahayuti ministers blame Ladki Bahin scheme for delay in funds
Datta Bharane, sports and youth welfare minister, said at a public event on Sunday that funds to his constituency were getting delayed because of Ladki Bahin—though he did add that the situation was gradually improving. The admission from the NCP leader was also acknowledged by one more NCP minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who was recently inducted into the state cabinet as food and civil supplies minister. Bhujbal stated that it was an open fact that the scheme had put a tremendous strain on the state exchequer.
Ladki Bahin Yojana, which was introduced after the Mahayuti alliance's debacle in last year's Lok Sabha elections, is a monthly dole of ₹1,500 to all eligible women in the economically weaker sections. However, with an estimated revenue deficit of ₹45,892 crore for the financial year 2025-26, the government is now finding it difficult to make budgetary allocations for Ladki Bahin itself as well as other populist schemes announced before the assembly polls last year.
The statement made by Bharane is a clear indication of financial distress. 'I always look to the benefit of the people of my taluka,' he remarked during a public event in Indapur on Sunday. 'I am also trying to bring maximum funds to Indapur. But today, because of the Ladki Bahin scheme, funds are getting a bit late. However, the train is slowly starting to get back on track.'
Bhujbal also chose to explicitly say that Ladki Bahin had put a huge strain on the state exchequer, adding that there was nothing to hide. 'It is indeed obvious,' he said. 'If a family that earns a specific amount incurs a major expense, its other expenses come under stress. The exchequer is going through the same situation. If we set aside an amount of ₹45,000 crore a year, then other expenses will have to bear the pressure.'
The confession by his ministers did not go down well with NCP president and deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar. 'I will ask Bharane which funds exactly he has not received,' he said. 'He is my colleague in the state cabinet, and I will ask him in what sense he made that remark.'

Mumbai: Govt is planning to amend Maharashtra Education Institutions (Regulation of Fee) Act, 2011, to curb unregulated fee hikes in schools, said state education minister Dada Bhuse in the assembly on Wednesday. He said govt also plans to introduce legislation to crack down on the nexus between private coaching classes and colleges in the state. This was in response to questions about colleges charging fees but coaching classes undertaking the job of teaching. Bhuse also said that it was wrong for schools to insist that uniforms and school material be purchased from a specific shop. "However, the PTA (parent-teacher association) is empowered to push for fee hikes. As a result, 10-12 parents on the PTA can work towards a fee hike decision which will impact 10,000-12,000 children. There should be a rule that 50% of the children should be represented by their parents on the PTA," he said. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Varun Sardesai said schools had also adopted a strategy of keeping the official fees low but charging for other items. "There is a new racket. The fee is kept low, but the schools charge for infrastructure, picnics and so on," he alleged. In response, Bhuse said the fee regulation Act would be amended. "We have received many complaints, even though school fees are supposed to be hiked only by 15% every two years. Please send all your suggestions to us," he said. The issue of the nexus between coaching classes and colleges was raised by MLA Hiraman Khoskar. He said this had resulted in a situation where the fees for courses had shot up from Rs 15,000-20,000 to Rs 2.5 lakh. "The nexus between colleges and coaching classes has been seen in Nashik. Colleges are misusing the benefits they have been given by the state," he alleged.

3 Killed After Clashes In Sheikh Hasina's Hometown In Bangladesh
At least three people were killed in Bangladesh on Wednesday after clashes broke out between police and supporters of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina, authorities said. The clashes were triggered after members of Hasina's Awami League attempted to foil a rally by the National Citizens Party (NCP), made up of many students who spearheaded the uprising last year. Three people were killed after police got involved, and 17 others sustained various injuries, including bullet wounds, said Monoj Baral, a nurse at the Gopalganj District Hospital. "One of the them was identified as Ramjan Sikdar. Families took away two other bodies," Baral told AFP. Gopalganj authorities imposed a curfew in the district following the violence. Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus termed the attempt to foil the NCP rally "a shameful violation of their fundamental rights". "This heinous act... will not go unpunished," a statement from his office said. The NCP was scheduled to hold the rally as part of their countrywide "July March" programme to commemorate the uprising anniversary, local media reported. Gopalganj is a stronghold of the Awami League, as Sheikh Mujibur Rahman -- the founding president of Bangladesh -- hailed from this district, and Hasina also contested elections from this constituency. Hasnat Abdullah, an NCP coordinator, said those rallying took refuge at a police station after being attacked. "We don't feel safe at all. They threatened to burn us alive," Hasnat told AFP. The NCP has called for a blockade in response to the violence.

Over 4,000 women, 1,364 children traced through Operation Shodh between April and May: Fadnavis
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday informed the Maharashtra Legislative Council that under Operation Shodh, 4,960 missing women and 1,364 children were traced between April and May this year. 'Operation Muskan and Operation Shodh have been launched to search for missing children, women and girls in the state. Through this, a large number of missing children, girls and women have been found,' said Fadnavis adding that 106 women and 703 children, for whom no missing complaints were registered, were also found through the programmes. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLC Sunil Shinde raised a starred question in this regard. Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve, MLCs Chitra Wagh and Pragya Satav also participated in the discussion. Stating that the government has taken strict steps in the wake of the increasing incidents of women and girls going missing in the state, Fadnavis said as per the orders of the Supreme Court, it is now mandatory to register a case immediately if any person goes missing. If small children go missing, a case of kidnapping is registered. 'Out of the total 5,897 missing cases in Nagpur city, 5,210 persons have been traced, which is more than 90 percent… Under 'Operation Muskan', 41,193 boys and girls were traced between July 2015 and December 2024. The Supreme Court has taken note of this and many states have also adopted this scheme. A separate 'Operation Shodh' was implemented for women,' he said. The Chief Minister said orders have been given to set up a 'missing cell' in every police station. 'A woman police officer will be the head of this cell. Some women and girls get caught in the trap of human trafficking. Therefore, the government has initiated concrete measures in this regard,' he said. Fadnavis informed that a one-stop centre 'Bharosa' provides counseling, protection and legal aid to women. 'This centre is used by women who have left their homes due to domestic violence and family disputes. At the school level, awareness is created on sex education, good/bad touch under the 'Police Kaka-Didi' initiative. Now, information about 'missing persons' will also be included in this,' he said.
