CF Montréal falls 2-1 to Union, maintains grip on last place in MLS East

Club de Foot Montreal CHESTER, Pa. — Tai Baribo scored his 14th goal and rookie defender Olwethu Makhanya scored the first of his career early in the second half to lead the Philadelphia Union to a 2-1 victory over CF Montréal on Wednesday night. Baribo scored unassisted with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box in the 37th minute to put the Union up 1-0. Prince Owusu took a pass from defender Joel Waterman two minutes into stoppage time and scored to tie it 1-1 at halftime. It was a career-high 10th goal this season for Owusu and his 44th in 60 career appearances. Waterman's assist was his first in 128 career appearances over six seasons with CF Montréal. Philadelphia went back in front five minutes into the second half on the 21-year-old Makhanya's netter. Fellow defender Kai Wagner collected his eighth assist. Andre Blake turned away three shots on goal for Philadelphia (14-5-4). Sébastian Breza had two saves for CFM, which is in the Eastern Conference cellar at 3-14-6 and tied with the L.A. Galaxy for last overall in the MLS. The Union maintained its lead in the Eastern Conference and Supporter's Shield race by a point over FC Cincinnati, which shut out Lionel Messi and Inter Miami 3-0 Wednesday night. Expansion side San Diego FC began the day trailing the Union by a point as the leader in the Western Conference. Baribo is two behind league leaders Messi and Sam Surridge of Nashville SC in the race for the Golden Boot Award. The Union travel to play the Houston Dynamo on Saturday. CF Montréal will host the Chicago Fire on Saturday.

Sean Johnson posts 108th shutout as Toronto FC blank San Diego FC

(Photo credit: Julia Kapros-Imagn Images) Theo Corbeanu scored on a first-half penalty kick and Sean Johnson recorded his 108th career shutout to help Toronto FC record a stunning 1-0 victory over host San Diego FC on Wednesday night. Corbeanu's 20th-minute goal held up as Toronto FC (5-11-6, 21 points) shut down the vaunted offense of San Diego FC. The Reds improved to 3-0-2 against Western Conference foes this season. Johnson only needed to make one save for his sixth shutout of the season. His career count ranks fourth in MLS history. San Diego FC (13-7-3, 42 points) remain in first place in the West despite the sluggish setback. Toronto cautiously protected its late one-goal lead just four nights after allowing Atlanta United to score in the 11th minute of second-half stoppage time for a disappointing 1-1 tie. Pablo Sisniega made one save for FC San Diego, who fell to 6-3-3 at home. San Diego controlled the ball for two-thirds of the match and outshot Toronto 7-4 with all its shots coming in the second half. The Reds put two on target to San Diego's one. High-powered San Diego FC holds the MLS lead with 46 goals. But the club didn't take a single shot in the first half and didn't place a shot on target until the 71st minute when Chucky Lozano's right-footed shot was stopped by Johnson. This was San Diego FC's first match since losing high-scoring Milan Iloski earlier this week. Iloski's loan was mutually terminated Tuesday when the two sides couldn't agree to contractual teams. Iloski's 10 goals were second most on the team. Perhaps another reason for the slow offensive effort is that Lozano, one of three All-Stars on the squad, didn't enter the match until the 60th minute. Lozano had a close-range opportunity in the 86th minute but his left-footed shot was blocked by Toronto defender Alonso Coello. The Reds then prevented any late-match drama while improving to 2-4-2 over their past eight matches. Corbeanu fell in the box when he was kicked in the right knee by San Diego's Franco Negri in the 17th minute. No foul was called at the time but replay officials signaled for a review and it was determined Corbeanu was fouled. He stood at the spot in the 20th minute and delivered a right-footed boot into the top right corner of the net for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Theo Corbeanu's PK helps Toronto beat San Diego 1-0

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Theo Corbeanu scored in the 20th minute, Sean Johnson stopped the only shot he faced and Toronto FC beat San Diego FC 1-0 on Wednesday night in the first-ever meeting between the clubs. Corbeanu drew a foul in the penalty area and converted from the spot to give Toronto a 1-0 lead. Toronto (5-11-6) won for the second time in eight games. San Diego (13-7-3), which had won five six, leads the Western Conference with 42 points, one ahead of Vancouver. Pablo Sisniega made his second consecutive start and had a save for San Diego. CJ Dos Santos hasn't played since the 24-year-old goalkeeper suffered a nose injury in SDFC's 4-3 loss to Houston on July 5. San Diego had 67% possession and outshot Toronto 7-4 but had just one shot on target. ___ AP soccer:
