Explorers escape with no injuries after being rescued 250ft underground in abandoned mine shaft

Daily Mail27-04-2025
Two men were rescued without injury after becoming stuck in a 250ft abandoned mine shaft.
The pair were rappelling down the site near Twentynine Palms, California, on April 19 when their equipment failed.
A third member of the party, who stayed above ground, was able to summon rescue crews who used ARVs to navigate the rugged terrain.
Shawn Millerick, a spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department, said:
'This is an area that, you know, there's no way you're going to get a four-wheel drive vehicle up here. You need specialized equipment.'
A rescuer was lowered into the mine using a dual-line rope system as night began to fall.
'We're just going to hoist them out one at a time, and then our rescuer will come up after,' Millerick said.
Both men were secured and hoisted to the surface without suffering injuries just before 7pm.
'We had to dispatch everybody from all different points in the county,' Millerick added.
Crews from Twentynine Palms and Yucca Valley, Fontana, Lake Arrowhead and Hesperia were called to aid the rescue, according to SBCF.
Marine Corps Air Combat Center, Morongo Basin Ambulance, and the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department also provided support.
'This incident demonstrates San Bernardino County Fire's readiness to respond to emergencies in even the most challenging environments,' SBCF said.

'Thank You DeWanna Bonner': Fever Fans Sound Off After Big Win

'Thank You DeWanna Bonner': Fever Fans Sound Off After Big Win originally appeared on Athlon Sports. DeWanna Bonner's first visit to Gainbridge Fieldhouse since she was waived by the Indiana Fever (15-12) ended in an emphatic 107-101 defeat for the Phoenix Mercury (16-10). McDonald Outshines Bonner in Her Return Six-time All-Star Bonner returned quietly. She finished with just four points and one rebound in 21 minutes off the bench. The Fever, playing without injured Caitlin Clark for the 14th time this WNBA season, were led by guard Aari McDonald, who dropped in a season-high 27 points. Center Aliyah Boston joined in the fun with 22 points and 12 rebounds, while Mercury All-Star Alyssa Thomas had a game-high 32 points. Bonner's Exit Allowed the Fever to Sign Aari McDonald Watching McDonald steal the show on Bonner's return was especially cathartic for the 17,274 Fever fans in attendance and many more on social media. Bonner was waived by the Fever on June 25 after playing just nine games. She confirmed in a statement that she requested to leave the team, citing her feeling that 'the fit did not work out.' After shedding her $200,000 contract, the Fever decided to bring in the dynamic McDonald — who had played well in three games as a temporary signing earlier in the season — instead of signing another forward. Fever Fans Say Thanks to DeWanna Bonner "Thank you DeWanna Bonner for making way for Aari McDonald," a fan said after the win on X. "Your contributions will not be forgotten." The sarcastic tone pervaded social media as "gratitude" poured in for Bonner. "Thank you Dewanna Bonner," said another X user who posted her stats. "Dewanna Bonner thank you," added a fan. "You made right decision to leave so we can get Aari McDonald." "Thank you Bonner for letting us get Aari," said one ruthless fan, who could not wait to see Bonner leave. "You and (Alyssa Thomas) go on and get going to the airport." Though most of the "thank you" posts were laced with irony, the prevailing narrative from all parties is that Bonner leaving the Fever worked out best for everyone. Since reuniting with the Mercury, Bonner has averaged 11.5 points (against 7.1 with the Fever) and 5.0 rebounds per game (vs. 3.8 with Indiana) in six contests. Hampshire housebuilder sees growth despite housing market dip

A Hampshire housebuilder has reported a 'solid performance' despite a challenging market. Barratt David Wilson Homes Southampton, part of Barratt Redrow and based in Hedge End, announced the update for the 52 weeks ending 29 June. The firm, which is currently building Pebble Walk on Hayling Island, and Harbour Place in Bedhampton, achieved a net private reservation rate of 0.64 per active sales outlet per week, up from 0.58 in the previous year. A total of 16,565 homes were completed, including 538 from joint ventures. The group's adjusted profit before tax is expected to meet market expectations, reflecting some margin improvement and initial cost synergies. This performance was supported by a strong balance sheet position with year-end net cash of around £772m. Estimated adjusted item charges for the year are expected to be around £229m, including legacy property charges, acquisition-related reorganisation costs, and CMA commitment costs. The Redrow acquisition delivered cost synergies ahead of schedule. READ MORE: New chief executive named for Hampshire Hospitals Trust Matthew Paine, managing director at Barratt David Wilson Homes Southampton division, said: "Against a challenging market backdrop, we have delivered a solid performance this year. "Our adjusted profits are in line with market expectations, despite home completions being slightly below our guided range, mainly due to the impact of fewer international and investor completions than expected in our London businesses. "We are already seeing tangible benefits from the Redrow acquisition, with cost synergies being delivered ahead of schedule, a new divisional structure in place, and revenue synergies progressing well." However, demand during the year was impacted by consumer caution and mortgage rates not falling as quickly as hoped. Despite this, there remains a long-term structural under-supply of housing in the UK. Matthew added: "Our increased scale, three market-leading brands, and strong land pipeline put us in a unique position to rapidly accelerate volume delivery as consumer confidence strengthens and the benefits of planning reform materialise at a local level. "We remain confident in our medium-term ambition to deliver 22,000 high-quality homes a year, and in the long-term demand for our high-quality homes."

Boy, 11, thought ‘he was going to die' after being knocked down in hit and run

A young boy who suffered two broken hips in a hit-and-run crash while riding an e-scooter has said: "I thought I was going to die." Bradley Hooper, 11, was riding his cousin's e-scooter when he was hit by a black Vauxhall coming from Sullivan Road into Montague Avenue, Sholing. His mum Hollie Hooper, 30, was told by a witness he went "down like a ragdoll' in the incident on Wednesday just after 7.20pm. Speaking while still in hospital, Bradley said the people in the car 'drove off and left me'. He said: 'I thought I was going to die and thought: 'I love my family, and my mum is my angel'. 'I have scary dreams of them coming to get me and running me over again." Bradley added: 'Thank you to everyone who cares for me and loves me.' Devastated mum-of-four Hollie said Bradley is waiting to see if he needs surgery. She said he is worried about returning home to Sholing in case the drive comes back. Some of the injuries sustained by Bradley Hooper (Image: Hollie Hooper) She said: 'I want to get justice for my son and find out who did this. 'Bradley went flying off the scooter and was screaming in pain. He moved out of the road and onto the pavement where he collapsed. It happened so fast.' Hollie was out shopping at the time and first heard about the crash when her nephew and brother called her. 'I rushed there as soon as I could when they told me and the police were on the scene straight away', she said. 'The driver nearly killed Bradley and I am disgusted and mortified.' In a plea to the public, she said: 'Please come forward. If you are a parent, how would you feel if this was your child? 'It is horrific that someone could leave a child for dead – they left before realising Bradley was alive. 'I want to thank the Sholing and Thornhill community and everyone who has helped us so far.' Hampshire Constabulary confirmed an investigation into the incident is underway. A spokesperson said: 'We were called at 7.21pm on July 30 with reports of a car colliding with a pedestrian on Montague Avenue. 'The pedestrian, an 11-year-old boy, sustained fractures to his hips. 'The car involved did not remain at the scene. 'Enquiries remain ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to report this directly to police on 101, quoting 44250342256.
