
Increased Movement Of People Making Dengue Outbreaks More Common, Says Mosquito Expert

Dengue fever outbreaks have been surging in recent decades but new initiatives like infecting mosquitos with bacteria or genetic modification could dramatically slow the spread.
According to the World Health Organization there was just over 500,0000 reported cases in 2000 - ballooning to 5.2 million in 2019.
Last year, there were 14 million dengue cases - a record number dwarfing the previous 2023 high of 6.5 million.
This year, there's been 2.5 million.
Samoa, Fiji, Tonga and the Cook Islands have all declared dengue outbreaks. Samoa, Fiji and Tonga have each had at least one death from the viral infection.
Greg Devine from the World Mosquito Program said increased globalisation is making outbreaks more common.
Devine said mosquitos that carry the virus "hitchhike around the world" and the increased movement of people is increasing those infected by dengue.
Devine said a lot of people also don't have immunity.
"They don't have any protection against it because they've never been exposed to it before," he said.
"Dengue comes in four different serotypes, so just because you've had one doesn't mean you can't get another."
He said climate change was having an increasing impact.
"We are hotter and wetter than we've ever been before and that's great for mosquitoes. It also means that the virus in mosquitoes is replicating more rapidly."
The aedes aegypti mosquito - which carries dengue - is considered a tropical or subtropical mosquito, but Devine said warmer weather would also increase the mosquitoes' range of where it inhabits.
In the Pacific, health ministries are trying to stamp out mosquito breeding grounds and are spraying insecticides outside.
But Devine said doing so has had limited success in reducing the spread.
He said the aedes aegypti mosquito is "completely reliant upon humans for its blood meals" which meant it liked to stay indoors, not outdoors where the majority of the spraying happens.
"Outdoor use of insecticides, it's perhaps better than nothing and the truth is that the community wants to see something happening.
"That's a very visible intervention but the reality is, there's a very limited evidence base for its impact."
Mosquitoes continually exposed to insecticides would also evolve resistance, Devine said.
The World Mosquito Programme infects mosquitos with a naturally occurring bacteria called Wolbachia, which stops viruses like dengue growing in the mosquitoes' bodies.
"It's been trialled in New Caledonia, where it's been extremely successful," Devine said.
"In the years since, the mosquito releases have been made by the World Mosquito Program, there's been no dengue epidemics where once they were extremely common."
He said genetically modified mosquitoes were also being looked at as a solution.
"That's a different kind of strategy, where you release large numbers of mosquitoes which have been modified in a way which means when those males interact with the local mosquito female population, the resulting offspring are not viable, and so that can crash the entire population."
When asked if that could collapse the entire aedes aegypti mosquito population, Devine said he wouldn't be "particularly worried about decimating numbers".
"People often refer to it as the kind of cockroach of the mosquito world.
"It's very, very closely adapted to the human population in most parts of its range. The species evolved in Africa and has since, spread throughout the world. It's not a particularly important mosquito for many ecosystems."

WHO fails to find a definitive answer for how Covid-19 began
An expert group charged by the World Health Organization to investigate how the Covid-19 pandemic started released its final report, reaching an unsatisfying conclusion: Scientists still aren't sure how the worst health emergency in a century began. At a press briefing Marietjie Venter, the group's chair, said that most scientific data supports the hypothesis that the new coronavirus jumped to humans from animals. That was also the conclusion drawn by the first WHO expert group that investigated the pandemic's origins in 2021, when scientists concluded the virus likely spread from bats to humans, via another intermediary animal. At the time, WHO said a lab leak was 'extremely unlikely'. Venter said that after more than three years of work, WHO's expert group was unable to get the necessary data to evaluate whether or not Covid-19 was the result of a lab accident, despite repeated requests for hundreds of genetic sequences and more detailed biosecurity information that were made to the Chinese government. 'Therefore, this hypothesis could not be investigated or excluded,' she said. 'It was deemed to be very speculative, based on political opinions and not backed up by science.' ADVERTISEMENT She said that the 27-member group did not reach a consensus; one member resigned earlier this week and three others asked for their names to be removed from the report. Venter said there was no evidence to prove that Covid-19 had been manipulated in a lab, nor was there any indication that the virus had been spreading before December 2019 anywhere outside of China. 'Until more scientific data becomes available, the origins of how SARS-CoV-2 entered human populations will remain inconclusive,' Venter said, referring to the scientific name for the Covid-19 virus. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said it was a 'moral imperative' to determine how Covid began, noting that the virus killed at least 20 million people, wiped at least US$10 trillion (NZ$16.5 trillion) from the global economy and upended the lives of billions. Last year, the AP found that the Chinese government froze meaningful domestic and international efforts to trace the virus' origins in the first weeks of the outbreak in 2020 and that WHO itself may have missed early opportunities to investigate how Covid-19 began. US President Donald Trump has long blamed the emergence of the coronavirus on a laboratory accident in China, while a US intelligence analysis found there was insufficient evidence to prove the theory. Chinese officials have repeatedly dismissed the idea that the pandemic could have started in a lab, saying that the search for its origins should be conducted in other countries. Papua New Guinea declares national HIV crisis
As transmission rates soar, Papua New Guinea has declared a national HIV crisis to try and galvanise action to prevent the spread of the virus. UNAIDS and the World Health Organization estimate the Pacific nation recorded 11,000 new cases last year alone. That's equivalent to 30 new positive tests a day including seven newborns, who could have been prevented from contracting HIV through antiretroviral therapy. PNG Health Minister Elias Kapavore said the trend was "deeply concerning". "As such, I am declaring this a National HIV crisis," he told a press conference in Port Moresby. ADVERTISEMENT The declaration is more than symbolic, activating a national emergency response plan enabling cross-sector co-ordination and investment in HIV services. Adding to the anguish at the figures is the advancement of treatment and prevention options for HIV. Most crucial is improving testing rates, so that more of the estimated 120,000 in Papua New Guinea with HIV can seek treatment. Acting PNG health secretary Ken Wai said testing every pregnant woman can allow them to know their status and then access medication that prevents transmitting the virus to their child. "We must scale-up access to HIV testing and treatment, particularly for groups most at risk. These priority initiatives should be offered at health facilities nationwide, and will require community leadership and support," he said. Kapavore called HIV "a disease of inequality". "It is time for all of us to step up. I personally commit to raising this issue with my fellow ministers and parliamentarians and ensuring the urgent allocation of resources to protect our people - especially the next generation of Papua New Guineans," he said. Tonga's Government Mum On Health Cyber Breach

The breach by hackers and their subsequent demand for payment were revealed in parliament four days after the event. Meanwhile, concern about illegal access to health records is mounting, amid a requirement that patients bring any medical records they have into the country's hospitals as staff are now relying on manual data. Former Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni wants a full explanation from the government, but most of the country's leaders are in Ha'apai this week for the annual conference of the Wesleyan Church.
