China's first Legoland opens to tourists in Shanghai

The Chinese branch of the British-owned theme park franchise is the biggest Legoland in the world. It drew in early customers who flocked to attractions including a miniature train ride and a dragon-themed rollercoaster. "I personally love to play with Lego blocks and we have many sets at home... so I wanted to come to Legoland at the earliest opportunity," said Shi, a 35-year-old resident of nearby city Hangzhou, who was visiting the park with his wife and child. Despite the Chinese economy's sluggish growth in recent years, domestic tourist spending grew 18.6 percent in the first quarter of this year compared to the previous year, according to statistics. "Ever since the pandemic, I've made very few trips abroad," said Shi, adding his family now travels to theme parks around China "many times a year". Eager Lego fans rushed into the park as soon as it opened, wearing themed shirts and waving branded flags as they enjoyed the 318,000-square-metre (78.5-acre) compound in scorching temperatures. Beijing has announced subsidies intended to make travelling within the country more affordable for Chinese citizens, and is pushing local governments to heavily market their attractions on social media. Companies have taken note of the wider local tourism boom and stepped up their plans in China. A new "Spider-Man" attraction at Shanghai Disneyland broke ground in May, while Warner Brothers is set to open a Harry Potter experience in Shanghai by 2027. Toy giant Hasbro said this week its giant Peppa Pig park in the city was now "in the phase of creative design". Chinese collectable toy maker Pop Mart has also opened an attraction in Beijing featuring life-sized versions of its popular Labubu toys. "The various provinces are putting a lot of effort into expanding their tourism industries, and all of them have special attractions," said Xu, a 34-year-old parent visiting Legoland on Saturday with his children. But profitability remains a problem, especially for local companies with less brand recognition. As of late 2024, around 40 percent of parks were still failing to turn a profit, according to state media reports. Yet analysts point to a growing population of retirees and job market changes as key factors pushing more locals to visit domestic attractions. "The labour market is turning more flexible," said Ernan Cui, China consumer analyst at Gavekal Research. "More people have leisure time to travel around."

Top Government-Backed Business Support Platforms in Dubai: A Guide for Entrepreneurs and SMEs

Dubai has long positioned itself as a leading hub for entrepreneurship in the region, and that's not just a marketing slogan—it's backed by real infrastructure, funding, and government commitment. According to the UAE Ministry of Economy, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) represent more than 94% of all companies operating in the country and contribute over 60% to the national GDP. So, what's powering this growth behind the scenes? Beyond funding and free zones, Dubai offers a variety of officially backed networking platforms designed specifically to connect entrepreneurs, founders, and SME owners with the right people, resources, and opportunities. Could a single conversation at a government-backed forum unlock your next big client, supplier, or investor? With the competitive pressure of Dubai's fast-moving business environment, staying connected isn't just helpful. It's often essential. These structured forums do more than facilitate introductions. They offer access to government support programs, exclusive workshops, procurement opportunities, and regional exposure that's difficult to replicate through informal channels. How else can a startup founder get direct access to policymakers or corporate decision-makers? In this article, we explore the top official business networking groups and forums in Dubai, highlighting who they're for, how to join, what they cost, and what kind of support entrepreneurs can realistically expect. Dubai SME (Department of Economy and Tourism) Dubai SME, a division of the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), was established in 2002 to support UAE National entrepreneurs through every stage of their business journey. Formerly known as the Mohammed Bin Rashid Establishment for SME Development, it offers guidance, funding, and streamlined access to government services. Its integration within DET reflects a long-term commitment to SME growth, ensuring alignment with Dubai's economic goals and simplifying official procedures for business owners. Best for: New entrepreneurs launching businesses. UAE/GCC nationals aiming for long-term business growth. Existing SMEs needing scale-up support. Enterprises targeting government contracts (10% of contracts are allocated through Emirati Supplier Programme). Dubai-based businesses (including select free zones). Funding Services: Enterprise must be 100% UAE-owned and Dubai-based. Dubai Chambers (Commerce, International & Digital Economy) Dubai Chambers operates under a three-chamber model—Commerce, International, and Digital Economy—established through Law No. 1 of 2022 to boost Dubai's non-oil trade and global business appeal. The Dubai International Chamber focuses on attracting foreign investment and helping local businesses expand internationally. This shift from a single entity to a multi-chamber structure reflects Dubai's commitment to economic diversification and offers more targeted support to businesses based on their specific needs and growth goals. Best for: Mainland and free zone companies in trade, industry, or services. SMEs aiming for international expansion (e.g., via Dubai International Chamber's 'New Horizons'). Foreign investors and international companies. Businesses involved in trade needing COOs, Carnets, or attestations. Companies looking for local/global networking and industry insights. Ministry of Economy – National SME Programme The National SME Programme, under the Ministry of Economy and established by Federal Law No. 2 of 2014, serves as the federal arm of SME support in the UAE. It empowers Emirati entrepreneurs through coordinated efforts with the government and private sectors, offering marketing, funding, and training support. Focused on sustainable development and national competitiveness, the program plays a key role in promoting locally made products and fostering a new generation of Emirati business leaders. Best for: UAE nationals (18+ years old). Businesses less than 3 years old or with fewer than 4 existing trade licenses. 100% UAE-owned, registered, and compliant with National SME classification. Valid for 2 years post-trade license renewal. Dubai Economic Development Department (DET) The Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), formerly DED, is the main body shaping Dubai's economic strategy. It supports the emirate's shift toward a diversified, service-based economy through agencies like Dubai SME and Dubai Exports. DET handles mainland licensing, drives export growth, and promotes foreign investment. Its rebranding reflects the integration of tourism into Dubai's economic priorities, creating a unified support system for both traditional businesses and the hospitality sector. Entrepreneurs should note that DET governs mainland licensing, while free zones have separate authorities. Best for: Entrepreneurs setting up mainland businesses. Companies needing license renewals, trademarks, and permits. Exporters seeking new markets (via Dubai Exports). SMEs looking for FDI opportunities or government procurement. Business Setup Process: Choose legal form and jurisdiction. Register trade name, submit documents, apply for the appropriate license. Provide lease/NOC, passport copies, and any required plans or forms. Export Support: Register via eServices portal. Update profile, request services. Programs like trade missions require separate eligibility. Free Zone Interaction: DET does not regulate free zones, but free zone entities must follow DET procedures to operate branches on the mainland. Required documents include trade name certificate, agent agreements, and Ministry of Economy registration (AED 15,000 fee). This service aims to cater to the evolving needs of households and businesses across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Mserve will operate as a dedicated division of Musanadah, a Saudi enterprise established in 2011. The company boasts over 1,700 skilled professionals, including technicians, tradespeople, cleaners, and maids. The firm is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Saudi conglomerate Alturki Holding. Operating to internationally recognised standards such as BICSc, Institute of Asset Management (IAM), and ISSA, Mserve customers can expect quality services. The company's commitment to excellence is showcased in its ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 certifications. Mserve strives to provide home and property maintenance services that meet the growing demand for quality services in Saudi Arabia, said a statement. Muhammad Shahzad, Director of Mserve said, 'We are proud to be a 100% Saudi-owned operation, always placing our valued clients at the centre of everything we do. At Mserve, we are especially focused on punctuality. Our promise is to be on time, every time, whether for a routine visit or an urgent call-out and to always keep our clients well informed of the progress on any project. With a CaFM-enabled call centre and client portal, our team is fully committed to delivering consistent, high-quality home and property maintenance services that meet the diverse needs of our clients. Our ultimate objective is to establish Mserve as the go-to operator for dependable, professional maintenance services across the Kingdom.' Mserve is structured into two specialised arms- Mserve Home and Mserve Business. Mserve Home caters to homeowners and tenants seeking efficient and high-quality home maintenance and daily maid services. On the other hand, Mserve Business focuses on delivering property maintenance and MEP solutions to various clients, including small and medium enterprises, retailers, commercial properties, hospitality venues, educational institutions, and developers of master communities. Customers have the flexibility to choose between one-time visits or fixed-term plans. Mserve also offers annual maintenance packages in Bronze, Silver, and Platinum tiers, providing homeowners with value-driven options. Mserve Home provides a comprehensive range of home maintenance services, including regular domestic support services, move-in and move out services, air conditioning, plumbing, movers, landscaping, and electrical repairs. All services are delivered by trained professionals using advanced tools and techniques, the statement outlined. Nigel Wright, Managing Director, Musanadah commented, 'Our market research and gap analysis of the Saudi market revealed a clear need in the home and property maintenance sector. On one end, large FM companies were mainly focused on major commercial contracts to effectively serve residential properties or the needs of small to medium businesses. On the other, the market was saturated with fragmented, one-man-band or smaller operators lacking the capacity to deliver consistent, reliable service. Mserve was created to perfectly fill this gap – offering a dependable, professional and high-quality solution. Our goal is simple, to provide the most trusted and comprehensive home and property maintenance services in the Kingdom.' Mserve Business, a provider of integrated facilities management and MEP solutions, caters to small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with end-to-end property care services. Covering a range of services, including soft and hard services, pest management, HVAC duct cleaning, and more, Mserve also offers specialised services for property developers. These services include snagging and pre-handover services, post-handover and defect liability period (DLP) management, and asset rectification, all aimed at optimising asset performance and extending their lifecycle, the statement concluded.
