Hiking, biking and surfing: my life as a holiday thrill seeker
Marriott Bonvoy® American Express® Card (Representative 53.3% APR Variable, Annual fee applies, 18+, Subject to status, terms and conditions apply) It's not that I don't like reading a book on a sun-lounger by the pool, lazing in a beachside hammock, or getting pampered at a hotel spa – I love all of those things – but I only like doing them once I've filled the day with some adrenaline-charged activity first. Whether you're rafting, surfing or mountain biking, adventure travel gets you out into nature and out of your comfort zone – it makes your holiday more memorable, and your relaxation time feel so much sweeter. I can't think of the last holiday I went on that didn't involve some kind of outdoor or ocean-based adventure. Maybe it was in early childhood when my parents tried to take me around their choice of city-based museums a few times before realising we'd all have a far more relaxing trip if we chose holidays centred around the beach, where I would spend all day playing in the waves. I still love being in the sea, and surfing is one of my favourite pastimes. There are so many incredible places around the world for wave riding – from Sydney's iconic Bondi beach (where I visited as a youthful backpacker), to Seminyak, a beach resort area at the southern end of Bali – that it can be difficult to choose one destination when you're booking a holiday. Courtyard Bali Seminyak Resort Seminyak is a popular destination for surfers of all ability levels. Stay at the Courtyard Bali Seminyak Resort, a vibrant hotel just a short walk from the beach and a stone's throw from some of Bali's finest bars and restaurants. Alternatively, Marriott Bonvoy® American Express® Cardmembers can accumulate 6 points for every £1 spent at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy, so you could use your Card to dine at the hotel's restaurant, savouring local and international flavours – ideal for those who have built an appetite after a busy day in the surf. And with two points for every £1 spent elsewhere, using your Marriott Bonvoy® Amex® Card means that whatever you spend can also help towards your next surfing trip. And there are other activities aside from surfing. Guests can try their hand at kitesurfing or wakeboarding lessons, or even travel to the island's tropical jungle-rich interior for a mountain bike trip, including a descent down a volcano. In fact research has found that biking and hiking are the most popular activities for adventure-seeking holidaymakers. And for me, it's easy to see why. When I was younger, my most memorable travel experiences were mountain biking on boulder-strewn trails in South Africa's Western Cape and through black lava fields beneath Bali's Mount Batur, hiking amid wonderful canyons in Chiapas, Mexico, and the jagged peaks of Poland's Tatra mountains. If you are after a more leisurely cycling holiday, albeit still one filled with adventures, head to Copenhagen, one of the world's most bike-friendly capitals. Explore this outdoorsy city on two-wheels, taking in its beaches, its famed harbour baths, and traditional Danish fare, such as open-faced rye sandwiches, all while collecting Marriott Bonvoy® points as you go – which you can redeem for future stays, experiences and more. Whether you choose to stay at a hotel participating in Marriott Bonvoy, such as Residence Inn Copenhagen Nordhavn (you can rent bikes at reception) on the waterfront, or the Nobis Hotel Copenhagen, a Member of Design Hotels, housed in an historic building that once served as the Royal Danish Conservatory of Music, the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card will help elevate your stay. All Cardmembers automatically start with Silver Elite status, which includes perks such as Priority Late Checkout (subject to availability) And after all that cycling, your legs might thank you for a later start. You can upgrade to Gold Elite status with even more benefits when you spend £15,000 in a year as a Marriott Bonvoy Amex Cardmember. I am fortunate in that my children (aged 12 and 14) and husband are as hungry for adventure as I am. Our highlight trips have included a surf and safari adventure in Sri Lanka and climbing via ferratas in the French Alps. This summer, we're planning to go rafting and on an overnight bivouac hike in the French Pyrenees. Residence Inn Copenhagen Nordhavn And it appears, with our thirst for adventure, we're not alone. More holidaymakers than ever are looking to book trips which include unique and immersive thrill-seeking activities, and that trend is set to accelerate over the next decade, according to research. And if you're having so much fun on your holiday that you're reluctant to go home, Marriott Bonvoy American Express Cardmembers can also benefit from a Free Night Award – creating extra time for more adventures. ‘Don't try to do everything' – and four other expert tips on how to get the most out of your city break
Marriott Bonvoy® American Express® Card (Representative 53.3% APR Variable, Annual fee applies, 18+, Subject to status, terms and conditions apply) A city break is perfect for a short, sharp shot of culture. It's brief enough that nobody needs to ask for too much annual leave and long enough to be a refreshing getaway. With limited time, you want to make sure you get the most out of it – and because of that a little planning can go a long way. I've spent 20 years writing about travel, and city breaks are one of my favourite types of trip. Here are a few tips I've picked up along the way. I tend to travel with hand luggage only so I can step straight off the plane and hop easily on to my chosen mode of transport into the city. There are three things I never travel without: a power bank for my phone, because maps, translator apps and taking endless photos all drain my battery pretty quickly; a light rucksack that packs flat in my cabin bag on the way out but gives me extra space for souvenirs on the way back (check your airline allows an additional small bag); I also find a light scarf has a multitude of uses – I've used mine as a towel after an impromptu swim in Copenhagen's harbour, as well as to cover summer shoulders when visiting churches in Rome. With the latter in mind, it pays to do a little research ahead of time to check cultural sensitivities – it also helps make sure you pack for any extra adventures you may end up adding to the museum visits and meals out. And before you head off to the airport, it always pays to do a final check that you've packed the essentials before you leave the house: your (in-date) passport, phone and credit cards. Speaking of which, it's worth considering rewards cards that could help you get the most out of a trip. With the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card you can earn while you're exploring – Cardmembers earn two Marriott Bonvoy® points for every £1 spent on the Card, and a generous six points for every £1 spent at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy, which can be redeemed on future stays. All of which means you can enjoy your holiday to the full while gathering points for your next one. Plus, you may be eligible for a Free Night Award, depending on how much you spend throughout the year. A wheeled suitcase in cabin bag size is generally the easiest option – although each airline has its own spec, so always do a quick check on the airline website. If you're looking to buy a new bag, you could consider a suitcase with shoulder straps, which doubles as a rucksack. Mine has helped me no end when crossing picturesque, cobbled old towns to find my accommodation. And if you have hours to kill before your return flight and nowhere to leave your luggage, there is a proliferation of luggage storage options. There are several apps that are ready to point you to shops and businesses that will look after your case for just a few pounds. Remember, less is very often more. It can be tempting to pack your itinerary with things to see. After all, time is short and there's that great new exhibition on, and a friend said you absolutely had to visit that market. But then you find yourself lingering over coffee and suddenly you have to dash across the city to get to your next sight. So make a plan for those must-see spots, keeping a couple of ideas in reserve as a 'nice to see' if you have time. Try to visit things that are geographically close on the same day. And remember, some key sights get booked up months in advance. So if you want to go to the Alhambra in Granada or visit the Vatican in Rome, try to book well ahead online so you have your visit secured. Remember, too, that after a busy few days of sightseeing, it can be a good idea to factor in some downtime before your holiday ends. The Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card includes automatic Marriott Bonvoy® Silver Elite status, which features perks such as Priority Late Checkout (subject to availability), so you can take it easy with a relaxing start on your last day. The most rewarding travel experiences often come when we immerse ourselves in the daily life of the city. I've found fabulous coffee spots when strolling through neighbourhoods, and nothing beats a market for picking up local produce and enjoying a makeshift picnic in a nearby park. A chat with staff at bars and cafes can reveal some hidden spots, so ask them where they like to go. And look out for event posters. I ended up at the most authentic flamenco performance at a bar down a tiny street in Seville when I spotted an advert pasted on a lamppost. A little research online can also help pinpoint where the locals are hanging out. I use translation apps to search in the target language. Cuisine is a veritable gateway to the heart of a destination and it doesn't have to be fancy. Street food is a great way to eat on the go while experiencing the authentic flavours of your destination. Pick up a sweet, sumptuous pastel de nata in Lisbon, or portafoglio – a folded 'wallet pizza' – in Naples. In Malta's capital, Valletta, pastizzi are flaky pastry pockets filled with ricotta cheese or peas, while the morning after the night before in Madrid is perked up with crunchy deep-fried churros dipped in chocolate. Or, if you'd prefer to wind down after a busy day of excursions, you don't need to go far. If you're staying with Marriott Bonvoy, you can book in for a relaxing evening with dinner at your hotel, helping you to feel refreshed for the next day's adventure. And if you have a Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card, you can redeem your points on dining-in. Finally, I always make sure to reserve one great local foodie experience before I travel. If it's popular, you're unlikely to be able to walk in off the street. On a recent trip to Athens, it was Fita, a tiny spot with the freshest local ingredients that a Greek friend had recommended. By reserving a table at that of-the-moment trattoria or trending cocktail bar, you'll know you have one fancy night out and the rest of your meals can be left to enjoy in a more relaxed and spontaneous way. How does the Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card work? For every £1 you spend on your Card, you'll receive two Marriott Bonvoy® points. If you're using your Card at a hotel participating in Marriott Bonvoy, you'll receive six points per eligible £1 spent. Market stalls, Michelin stars and more: my Mediterranean food photography journey
Marriott Bonvoy® American Express® Card (Representative 53.3% APR Variable, Annual fee applies, 18+, Subject to status, terms and conditions apply) For most of us, taking pictures of a gleaming paella, Vietnamese pho or a display of lavender macarons is a huge part of being on holiday. Looking at the shots on our phone screens brings back not just the memory of a taste, but the place, the time, a soundtrack of conversations and emotions of that particular moment, a sensory souvenir of that pastel de nata in Belém or the crispy, wavy filo on the delicious spanakopita – the classic Greek spinach and cheese pie – at my friend Orfeas's home on Cephalonia. As a travel writer, food underlies so much of what I write about since it opens up the culture and history of a destination through local ingredients, preparation and cultivation. The photos represent a nostalgic trip back to the people I met and their stories. My dream travel experience, essentially, is discovering gastronomic gems and taking shots of the food, tucked-away restaurants and fresh produce markets I encounter along the way. Jon Bryant: 'Food opens up the culture and history of a destination through local ingredients, preparation and cultivation'. Photographs: Rebecca Marshall/The Guardian And I'm not alone in my enthusiasm – food, particularly sampling the local cuisine, is an important consideration for many holidaymakers. And if you have a Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card you can gather points while savouring local dishes on your gastronomic adventures. Cardmembers earn two points for every £1 spent using the Card, which can then be redeemed at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy on future stays and dining, adding more new dinner experiences to your list. My favourite food destination is Genoa and the Ligurian coast in northern Italy. The city, renowned for its pesto and panissa, has an Eataly food hall in the revamped port with huge racks of tomato paste, farinata, pasta and cheese. Down on Via XX Settembre, one of the main thoroughfares in the centre of the city, is the Mercato Orientale, a fresh produce market with glistening fish and stacks of artichokes. A little farther down the boulevard is the Cremeria Gran Sasso ice-cream parlour, safekeeping its fior di latte and fruity gelato inside steel canisters. Sometimes you stumble across a restaurant on your way to somewhere else. In Genoa, I was heading to the Castello D'Albertis on a hill above the city and came across Osteria Carabàs on Vico Tana. The tiny restaurant serves the most amazing Ligurian cuisine, such as homemade trofie al pesto, tuna seared with a pistachio crust, and black spaghetti with seafood. Meanwhile, at the AC Hotel Genova, you can enjoy beautiful views as the sun goes down during dinner on the terrace. Enjoy top regional dining at the AC Hotel Bologna and AC Hotel Genova Head inland, travelling east to Bologna, for more photogenic local produce and aromatic snack bars. Stay at the AC Hotel Bologna, just a few blocks from the Trattoria di Via Serra – a great place to experience Bologna's superlative pasta dishes. Back at the hotel, perks include a free fitness centre and meeting rooms for business travellers, plus Marriott Bonvoy® American Express® Cardmembers will quickly amass points during their stay. Cardmembers gain six points for every £1 spent at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy, which can go towards room upgrades and free stays for their next culinary trip. Across the border in France, Nice has developed into one of the country's foodie hotspots in the last five years, with a huge selection of traditional and fusion fare, and eight Michelin-starred restaurants. Nice also has a popular cooking school, Les Petits Farcis, which offers classes in English and tours of the excellent fresh produce market on the Cours Saleya. AC Hotel Marseille Prado Velodrome's on site restaurant offers Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Photograph: Marc Rabaux/Studio BaALT Marseille is another French city with a burgeoning food scene, renowned for its beloved bouillabaisse (Provençal fish soup). The AC Hotel Marseille Prado Velodrome, set alongside Olympique Marseille's futuristic football stadium, is perfectly placed to enjoy the city's growing gastronomic reputation, and also has a restaurant on site, Oh Massalia, offering Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Food and photography can offer a deep insight into a new city, and I often find myself walking miles during my trips, locating food markets, tracking down recommended restaurants, and finding the best places to sample the local delicacies. It's common to eat dinner later in France and Italy, than in the UK. For a more relaxed start in the morning, your Marriott Bonvoy American Express Card automatically gives you Silver Elite status at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy, making you eligible for Priority Late Checkout (subject to availability). You can upgrade to Gold Elite status with even more benefits when you spend £15,000 in a year as a Marriott Bonvoy® Amex® Cardmember. Clockwise from top left: the W Barcelona and its stylish rooftop pool; Barcelona's rowdy and colourful Mercat de la Boqueria; fresh artichokes in Rome's Mercato di Testaccio. Photographs: Andrea Federici/Shutterstock; Factofoto/Alamy A joy for any photographer is always the fresh food markets with their piles of spices, cured sausages, cheeses, pastries, and fruit and vegetables. Having drifted through the aisles of many of France's most celebrated halles as well as the English market in Cork, Atarazanas in Málaga, Markthal in Rotterdam and Rome's Mercato di Testaccio, the most picturesque is Barcelona's Mercat de la Boqueria. Packed with locals and visitors, it's rowdy, colourful, majestic and, set in a cavernous hall from the 1830s, is enticingly photogenic. Wherever you end up, in a few months' time, you'll look back at your photos, linger over those mouth-watering piles of cheese and pastries, and start planning your next food-based adventure.
