Minister opposes IMF demand of more taxes on agri sector

KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Agriculture Muhammad Baksh Mahar has expressed serious concerns over the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) demand to impose an 18% General Sales Tax (GST) and increase Federal Excise Duty (FED) on fertilisers, sprays, and agricultural machinery.
Mahar said, 'The IMF's demand is extremely unfair and anti-farmer, which will prove disastrous for the country's agricultural sector and farmers. The IMF must refrain from proposing additional taxes on the agriculture sector.'
He emphasised that farmers across the country, including Sindh, are already suffering due to climate change, water scarcity, and low crop prices.
The provincial minister warned that the new taxes would lead to an enormous increase in agricultural production costs, ultimately jeopardising food security.
He stated that this would trigger a new wave of inflation in the country. He strongly urged the federal government to persuade the IMF and make it aware of the importance of the agriculture sector.
He made it clear, 'The IMF's demand is causing severe unrest among farmers, and we vehemently oppose any such proposal.' He said that providing facilities to agriculture is the need of the hour instead of imposing additional burdens on it.

Gold drifts higher; platinum at highest in over a decade

NEW YORK: Gold prices firmed on Friday on a weaker dollar and persistent geopolitical tensions, though easing concerns about the US Federal Reserve's independence, and strong US data capped gains. Spot gold was up 0.4% at $3,350.87 per ounce, as of 1013 GMT, after falling 1.1% in the previous session. The bullion has receded 0.1% so far this week. US gold futures rose 0.3% to $3,356.70. The dollar was down 0.4% for the day, though headed for a second straight weekly rise. A weaker dollar tends to make gold cheaper for buyers holding other currencies. The European Union agreed to an 18th package of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine, including measures aimed at dealing further blows to its oil and energy industry. 'Gold is rising on the softer US dollar, yet remains hemmed in by this week's US data releases which buffered the notion that the world's largest economy remains resilient,' said Han Tan, chief market analyst at 'New EU sanctions on Russia are a reminder to market participants that geopolitical risks remain evident on the global stag.' Earlier in the week, a source told Reuters that US President Donald Trump was open to firing Fed Chair Powell. Trump later said he doesn't plan to sack Powell but renewed his criticism over the Fed's interest rate policy. Meanwhile, US retail sales in June exceeded expectations, while initial jobless claims too were better. 'In precious metals, the carnival has moved on from safe-haven gold to silver, platinum and palladium as pro-growth, industrial alternatives,' said Adrian Ash, head of research at online marketplace BullionVault. Spot platinum rose 0.3% to $1,461.77 per ounce, its highest since August 2014. Palladium climbed 4% to $1,329.88, its highest since August 2023. Silver was up 0.5% at $38.31.

PoR card holders: Govt decides not to extend stay of Afghan refugees: interior minister

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has decided not to extend the stay of Afghan refugees holding Proof of Registration (PoR) cards, said Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi on Saturday. In an informal conversation with journalists, he said that strict action would be taken against Afghan nationals residing in the country illegally. Those who were deported from Pakistan would be blacklisted to prevent their re-entry into the country again, he said. Naqvi further said that Iran deported over 300,000 Afghan refugees within just 10 days. Pakistan is now undertaking effective measures along similar lines, he said. Undocumented Afghan DPs: deportation deadline extended While acknowledging Afghanistan as a 'brotherly Islamic country' Naqvi clarified that no foreign national would be allowed to stay in Pakistan without legal documentation. He emphasised that ongoing discussions between the two countries continue on various matters, but illegal residency would no longer be tolerated. According to the government's new policy, the process of extending PoR cards has been officially halted. Authorities are now accelerating the phase-wise repatriation of Afghan refugees. To a question, Naqvi denied any ongoing backdoor diplomacy with India, asserting that no such talks have taken place behind the scenes. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
