Skipper in fatal Perhentian capsize pleads guilty to drug use
PETALING JAYA : The skipper of the boat that recently capsized off Pulau Perhentian, killing three tourists, pleaded guilty to drug abuse at the magistrates' court in Besut, Terengganu, today.
Azrie Yazid, 22, made his plea after the charge against him was read before magistrate Nurliyana Zukri.
Kosmo reported that he was charged under Section 15(1)(A) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1957 with the consumption of nimetazepam at the office of the Besut police headquarters' narcotics criminal investigation division at 10.05am on June 29.
The charge provides for a fine of up to RM5,000, up to two years' imprisonment, or both upon conviction.
The court allowed Azrie bail of RM2,500 with one surety and set Sept 4 for remention of the case and the receipt of the pathology report.
The boat was carrying 15 passengers from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Pulau Perhentian Besar when it capsized at around 10.30pm on June 28.
S Arumugam, 40, his three-year-old daughter Sarrvihka, and a 10-year-old relative, V Vennpani, died at the scene.
Azrie, who tested positive for drugs following the accident, has a record of five criminal offences.

'Noraidah has never mentioned any high-profile individual in relation to Zara's death. Any such assumptions or allegations are baseless and did not come from her,' the lawyers said in a statement quoted by Berita Harian today. They also refuted viral claims that a student was shouted at with the words 'you're a murderer' on the day of the incident, and that three students had been transferred out of the school that same day. Noraidah, they said, only learned of these claims after they began circulating online. The case is still under police investigation. So far, statements have been recorded from 60 witnesses, including three individuals whose nicknames have been widely shared on social media, Berita Harian reported. Istana Seri Kinabalu has also issued a firm denial, refuting social media rumours linking the case to the family of Sabah Governor Tun Musa Aman. In the same statement, Noraidah's lawyers urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified information or speculating further on the case. 'Spreading false or baseless claims can interfere with the police investigation and defame innocent parties. 'Any information that may assist the authorities should be directed to the police or to our office,' they said.

JOHOR BAHRU, Aug 2 — The Defence Ministry is conducting its own inquiry into the sudden death of a 22-year-old university cadet during an army exercise in Ulu Tiram, Johor yesterday, separate from the police investigation. Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, a Universiti Teknologi Malaysia undergraduate in his second semester, collapsed after suffering a seizure during training as a reserve officer at the Army Combat Training Centre on July 28. He was rushed to the Kota Tinggi Hospital but pronounced dead while under treatment. His mother who lives in Perak has since filed a police report alleging possible foul play after discovering injuries on his body and is demanding an investigation.

In Pudu, wife shocked after learning policeman husband was stabbed during KL patrol
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 — The wife of a police corporal stabbed while on patrol in Pudu last week described her shock upon receiving a call from the hospital requesting immediate consent for emergency surgery. Norfazliana Osman, 35, said she was at their home in the Pudu police quarters when Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, contacted her around 1 pm on Thursday. 'They said they needed to operate immediately and asked for consent as part of his intestines might need to be removed due to the stab wound,' she told reporters at the hospital today. Her husband, Corporal Mohd Nadzri Sudiman, remains in stable condition but is still weak and requires pain management, she said. 'I understand the risks of his job as a policeman, but as a wife, the fear is always there,' said Norfazliana, who has two children aged 11 and seven. She said it is uncertain how long her husband will remain hospitalised, but confirmed their children have been informed of his condition. Earlier, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay visited Mohd Nadzri at the hospital. Also present were Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, Bukit Aman Management (Administration) deputy director Datuk Azizee Ismail, Wangsa Maju district police chief ACP Mohd Lazim Ismail and Cheras district police chief ACP Aidil Bolhassan. Mohd Nadzri was seriously injured after being stabbed in the abdomen by a 56-year-old local man while patrolling with four other officers in Pudu Market, Jalan Yew. The suspect was arrested at the scene and has been remanded until next Thursday.
