How Daylesford is reaping The Block's rewards
The Gold Logie winner says The Block had injected almost $8 million into Daylesford through its spending on crew accommodation, catering and building costs.
Two iconic businesses —the old Phoenix at the Rex Theatre and Hepburn Spa — also underwent major refurbishments in challenges undertaken by the teams during production.
'The Block has brought almost $8 million here, just in this town, and that's without employing people and buying stuff from outside of Daylesford,' Cam enthused of building five luxury eco-friendly homes on the outskirts of town.
The Raglan St site was initially proposed for the 2024 season, but planning approvals and backlash from the township delayed it.
Despite that initial reluctance, Cam says the Daylesford community had made the Channel 9 reality show feel completely at home.
So much so that the local fish and chip shop, the Daylesford Seafood Bar, even named a dish – the 'Scott Camburger' after the long-serving host (featuring his signature combo of BBQ and tomato sauce).
In addition to bringing jobs and trade to local businesses, The Block lifts tourism, with the opening episode of the 2025 season spotlighting Daylesford's annual Chill Out Festival.
For Shelley Craft, the latest season of The Block will also serve as an endorsement of the benefits of a tree change.
Craft, who moved to Byron Bay with her family in 2016, hopes that showcasing the Daylesford lifestyle as well as the renovation projects will inspire others to follow her lead and consider moving to a regional township.
'I know it's not as easy as it sounds, but to live in a community like this in regional Australia is such a wonderful gift for anyone to experience,' she said.
'A lot of our crew got to do that for three months and went: 'You know, country living ain't bad'.
'I've always loved country living myself, and it's just so wonderful that they got a little taste of that.
'And I know there'd be a lot of families going: 'You know, maybe it's time we should move out of the city. Maybe Daylesford is the spot'.'
Federal Ballarat MP Catherine King said she was really pleased to hear about the significant investment made in local businesses throughout the filming process.
'I've also heard how delighted the community was to host the program and how respectful everyone involved in the production was,' Ms King added.
'We're all excited to see Daylesford showcased in the upcoming season and I'm sure it'll encourage even more people to visit our stunning region.'
Certainly, all 10 contestants have vowed to continue to visit Daylesford in the future and have urged friends and family to do the same after falling in love with the region known for its hot springs.
'Rural Victoria is idyllic and very beautiful,' West Australian contestant Can said after completing her renovation with her girlfriend Han.
'Coming to countryside, the fresh air very different from Perth.
'The quality of the drinking water here is insane too. It's so crisp.
'I actually spent some of my time growing up in rural Victoria as a child. My grandparents had a farm. So, there was a lot of childhood nostalgia, coming back to rural Victoria.'
Fellow 2025 contestant Alicia added: 'I don't think that we would ever leave the Gold Coast because our families are there, but this is absolutely a place that we will continue to visit.
'We absolutely love Daylesford. And it's now on our radar and we have told all our friends about it.'

There's noise coming out of England again. Apparently, they've decided that sledging is back in fashion. Harry Brook reckons it's fun not being 'nice guys' anymore. Ben Stokes is warning opponents — especially India — that if they dish it out, England will return fire. Good on them. But here's a bit of advice: be careful what you wish for. Ashes series are about mental edge, sure. There's always been chatter, always will be. But sledging without substance is like bowling bouncers with no pace — the batter just laughs at it. Right now, England sound like they're trying to sound intimidating rather than being intimidating. Let's not pretend Australia are choirboys. I had plenty to say when I played — and copped plenty back. But that came with purpose. Sledging only works when you're dominating. And to be honest, right now England aren't. They haven't won an Ashes series since in Australia since 2010-11. They still don't know what their best top six is. Their Bazball model has some punch, but it's flimsy when conditions swing or spin. So maybe talking tough is a cover. A bit of theatre while they figure out the actual cricket. Here's what England need to remember: the Ashes aren't won at press conferences. They're won in the heat. When the new ball is jagging around at the Gabba. When a Mitchell Starc inswinger nips past your front pad before you've even had a look. When a bloke like Josh Hazlewood bowls 25 overs on the same spot and you can't breathe. That's when the real battle starts, not in the media, not on social clips, but in those moments when the scoreboard pressure builds and the crowd is roaring. I actually love this from an Aussie point of view. Let England yap. Let them tell the world how hard they're going to be. All it does is give the Australians more fire. While Australia might be at their most vulnerable in years with this current batting line-up — a few question marks at the top, the middle still rebuilding — they're still incredibly hard to beat at home. Always have been. Conditions, crowds, our bowlers — they all make life hell for touring teams. Especially ones coming in swinging wildly with the bat and the tongue. Let's not forget what happened last time England came down under. All the chat, all the optimism, then bowled out for 147 in the first innings of the first Test and for just 68 in the Boxing Day Test a couple of weeks later. That was the sound of reality setting in. And no amount of sledging helped them then. I'm not saying Australia are immune to pressure. They're not. This Ashes series could be tight — maybe even a real scrap. But if England think mouthing off is the key to getting on top of us, they've already lost focus. So to England, I say: bring your best. Talk your talk. But when that first ball is bowled in Perth in November, you'll find out quickly what's real and what's just noise. Because in the Ashes, only one thing matters — and it's not the volume.

Meet the contestants for The Block 2025
Five houses with the exact same footprint. Ten new contestants hoping to go home winners in 2025. Ahead of the 21st season of The Block, we have the lowdown on the five teams who will be building dream homes (and making drama) in Daylesford this year. Sonny and Alicia The only tradie on The Block this year, Sonny, 44, is a plumber. His wife Alicia, 42, ran a dental practice on the Gold Coast until quitting her job to do the Channel 9 reality series. Although the couple assured their three kids that they wouldn't embarrass them during the time on the show Alicia said that pledge quickly went out the window. 'Oh, we absolutely were embarrassing!' she laughed. 'As soon as we got in the car when we got home, we turned to the kids and said: 'Sorry!'' Before The Block, the couple had only undertaken small scale renovation projects 'like a bathroom here or there but never a whole house'. Alleviating some financial pressures for their family was the chief reason the pair signed up. 'It was absolutely hard leaving the kids behind,' Alicia said. 'They were our driving force and our motivation. And, on those tough days, we'd often remind ourselves that they're our reason for being there.' Robby and Mat South Australian barber Robby, 37, and his wisecracking best mate Mat, 41, (a hairdresser) hadn't renovated a single room before The Block. While Robby was a fan of the series, Mat had not seen a single episode and arrived on set believing Shelley Craft was one of the judges. 'Rob wanted me to do it for a decade,' Mat smiled of his friend who became a father for the first time just before they were cast. 'And I always said, 'There's no chance in hell,' because I didn't think that he would have the work ethic to do something like this. 'And he goes, 'Give me one shot, just one shot. So many people apply, the likelihood of us getting on is very slim.' 'Anyway, we got on and his work was phenomenal. We were a powerhouse together.' Han and Can A geologist who has worked in the mines, Han, 29, and her social media and marketing analyst girlfriend Can, 31, are eager to prove that women can do anything that men do on a worksite. Han (affectionately nicknamed Handy Han by Can) in particular, grew up on worksites as her dad ran a renovation business and would get her to help with bathroom excavations while she was still in primary school. The pair have no regrets about doing the series even though it proved a daily rollercoaster of emotions. 'The Block is the ultimate relationship tester,' Can said. 'It is a high-pressure environment for anyone, and it honestly just made us stronger in the end. Having been through this together and picking each other up each day and knowing that I could always rely on Han when I needed to, was so special.' Britt and Taz Married police officers, Britt, 30, and Taz, 30, had to leave their two small children behind with family in West Australia to compete on the show. A huge fan of the series, Britt talked her less ardent husband into auditioning. Apart from missing their kids, the hardest part of their time in Daylesford was adjusting to the weather. 'Where we come from, it's about 40 to 50 degrees every day so to come down here, and it's negative two degrees every day is a shock,' Taz said (admitting to wearing multiple layers even on sunny days whilst he was in Daylesford). 'But even when it was 20 degrees, it felt very cold to me.' The pair were very mindful of doing the uniform proud on screen. 'Every person that's a copper knows that they are always looked at as a police officer [even when they are off duty],' Taz said. 'We have been told that even when you finish being a copper, you'll be known as a 'former police officer'. 'So yeah, there definitely was that pressure. But we just stuck true to who we were, and we're pretty happy with how we came out.' Em and Ben Teacher and pole dancing champion Em, 33, and her engineer husband Ben, 32, auditioned for The Block seven times before finally making the cut. As the lone Victorian team, Em and Ben believe they had the home ground advantage over the interstate teams. 'At the start, we were like, yes, we'll bring all our mates up who are trades,' Em laughs. 'We thought we wouldn't need to look around for trades at all, but we're actually two and a half hours away from home in Daylesford, so we ended up finding all local trades here. 'We did have the home advantage with the weather, because definitely the Perth crew (and the Queenslanders) struggled. Taz was wearing three jumpers every morning.' The high school sweethearts have already flipped a few properties together but relished having a far bigger Block budget to really get creative. 'We've done things that we would never even imagine doing on our home renos down in Mornington,' Em said.

Mother and Son star Henri Szeps dies, aged 81

In 2021, Szeps revealed he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and had been living in a care facility since 2023. 'He was awarded countless acting prizes, culminating in an Order of Australia Medal in 2001,' according to a statement announcing his death on Thursday, the ABC said. 'His decline from Alzheimer's was largely peaceful, and Henri retained his sense of wonder and joie de vivre until the end.' Henri Szeps is survived by his Mary, two sons and four grandchildren. Szeps was born to two Polish Holocaust survivors in a Swiss refugee camp in 1943, before moving to Australia at the age of eight. He retired at the age of 70 after performing in his last play, saying his memory was 'no longer up to the task'. He leaves behind his wife Mary, two sons and four grandchildren. 'He was awarded countless acting prizes, culminating in an Order of Australia Medal in 2001,' Thursday's statement said. On stage he played characters such as Gandalf in The Hobbit and Sigmund Freud. He also starred alongside a young Nicole Kidman in the war mini-series, Vietnam, as Vietnam War prime minister Harold.
