Indy Pride plans two-day event, despite tough climate

Axios03-06-2025
Indy Pride is adding an extra day to the annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community despite a tough political climate.
Why it matters: It's the 30th anniversary for Indy Pride and organizers say folks wanted Pride weekend to truly feel like a whole weekend-long celebration — a needed balm for the anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric that's gotten louder over the last year.
What they're saying:"You can feel it in the energy," said Tina Robb, Pride's marketing director. "You can feel that people aren't wanting to celebrate as much this year. They're a little scared."
"It's hard, but we're going to do it. We're going to celebrate. This is our month to be loud and proud."
The big picture: Once-proud corporate America is pivoting. Companies big and small across the U.S. have pulled their support for some Pride events amid a larger rollback of diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
Mastercard, Citi, Pepsi, Nissan and PwC pulled sponsorship of NYC Pride and Minneapolis' Twin Cities Pride rejected Target's sponsorship dollars, citing the company's DEI rollbacks.
State of play: "Once the DEI announcement came out, we started to see community sponsors and major sponsors that could no longer participate with Indy Pride," Robb said. "It wasn't angry. It wasn't anything hostile. It was … it is what it is.
"It's disappointing and upsetting, but there's always support out there."
Robb would not list which sponsors backed out but said they've been able to fill in gaps and the show will go on.
Zoom in: Pride weekend starts Saturday, June 14, with the annual parade along Mass Ave. Robb said that event is largely unchanged, but will be smaller this year than last.
They're expecting about 200 participating groups, rather than the 250 they had last year.
The traditional festival and concert that follows the parade is back, but in a new spot and will last for two days.
What's new: The location. Construction near Military Park where festival vendors usually set up forced Indy Pride to look for a new home.
"Since it's our 30th anniversary, we said, 'Why don't we connect things back to the history?'" Robb said.
The earliest Pride celebrations were on Monument Circle, so that's where the free two-day festival will be this year.
The ticketed concert, called Word of Mouth, is moving to the American Legion Mall on Saturday and Sunday.
It'll be headlined by Natasha Bedingfield Saturday and Tinashe Sunday.
If you go: The festivities start at 10am June 14 for the free parade on Mass Ave.
The free Celebration on the Circle runs noon to 5pm June 14 and 15.
Word of Mouth is 2-10pm both days. Tickets are $42 for one day or $62 for both.
Pro tip: Robb said volunteers get a free ticket to Word of Mouth and attendees at one of the earlier Pride month events can get a discount of 20% off tickets by asking at the Indy Pride Inc. tent.

MAGA law group fights to expose how Biden's DEI agenda may have tainted life-saving organ transplants

A conservative legal group is trying to uncover whether the former Biden administration's focus on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives seeped into the nation's organ transplant system and led to prioritizing patients based on race. MAGA law group America First Legal is suing a number of federal health agencies to obtain documents related to the nation's organ transplant system. Specifically, they're targeting the Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Health Resources Services Administration, in an attempt to compel them to turn over documents related to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). In April 2023, AFL filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request seeking documents relevant to the Biden administration's efforts to infuse DEI into the organ transplant system. However, to date, AFL says it has not received any of the requested information and, as a result, decided to sue in an effort to compel the release of it. "The Biden Administration infected the federal government with 'equity,' replacing traditional principles of fairness and need with race-conscious criteria," said America First Legal Counsel Will Scolinos. "AFL is determined to uncover the complete scope of Biden-era DEI policies and will continue to take decisive action to restore colorblind healthcare." The order also required each agency to develop an action plan to address those barriers. As part of this effort, in December 2021, CMS issued a request to the public for comments on how the agency could "Advance Equity and Reduce Disparities in Organ Transplantation." "CMS is focused on identifying potential system-wide improvements that would increase organ donations, improve transplants, enhance the quality of care in dialysis facilities, increase access to dialysis services, and advance equity in organ donation and transplantation," the agency said at the time. "Communities of color have much higher rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, all of which increase the risk for kidney disease. Black Americans are almost four times more likely, and Latinos are 1.3 times more likely, to have kidney failure compared to White Americans. Despite the higher risk, data shows that Black and Latino patients on dialysis are less likely to be placed on the transplant waitlist and have a lower likelihood of transplantation. Because of these stark inequities, CMS' [Request For Information] asks the public for specific ideas on advancing equity within the organ transplantation system." According to the HRSA, the move made the data "clearer, more consistent and easier for users to interpret," and did not impact the manner in which data is collected. OPTN collects and manages data pertaining to the patient waiting list, organ donation, matching and transplantation in the U.S. HRSA also announced a "modernization initiative" for OPTN around the same time, which included plans to strengthen "equity, and performance in the organ donation and transplantation system." In its lawsuit, AFL chronicled a series of delays, non-responses and incomplete communications following its April 2023 FOIA request. AFL is hoping to obtain a judge's order requiring the release of the records it is seeking, as well as an index of any withheld material and explanations for why it could not be provided. "The last administration's pervasive directives requiring consideration of immutable characteristics like race, color, and ethnicity — to make healthcare more 'equitable' — should concern all Americans," Scolinos said Tuesday. "AFL is determined to uncover the complete scope of Biden-era DEI policies and will continue to take decisive action to restore colorblind healthcare." End the Pride Parade's hypocritical ban on gay NYPD officers

For the fifth straight year, the folks who run the city's Pride parade banned cops from marching in uniform: Gay officers have to closet their NYPD affiliation to participate. The pretext that NYC Pride's Heritage arm offers is that it doesn't want anyone marching armed, and cops must carry their weapons when in uniform. Yet the issue never proved a problem before Heritage imposed the ban in 2021, at the height of anti-police obsessions after George Floyd's death. Advertisement Nor did anyone complain when NYPD officers responded rapidly Sunday night after two teens got shot near the Stonewall Inn. Plus, of course, armed police guarded the parade itself. 'It is the height of hypocrisy that uniformed officers are fit to line the parade route and keep everyone safe, but they are unable to march in their own uniform and under their own banner,' thundered Commissioner Jessica Tisch, who joined protesting police on the parade sidelines. Advertisement 'The ones being asked to stay out of sight are us, the gay, the trans, the queer, and our allied officers who have risked everything to serve both this city and this community. It is not about safety, it is about exclusion' decried Det. Brian Downey, president of Gay Officers Action League. It's still bizarre to see the now-triumphant gay-rights movement refusing to recognize the full identity of LGBTQ cops. Advertisement Somehow, the need to virtue-signal has New York City's central rainbow celebration mired in shame games — though its leaders lack the guts to own up to it.
